Book excerpt: 1983, a crazy year. Stolen cars were not at the groundbreaking rate of the 70’s, but the numbers were still impressive. Crap games, 40oz and weed spots, cookouts, scraps, two hand tag football in the street, went on as usual in the Garfield Heights projects. Deacon, Carter, Maxwell and Tank were counting down the days till their high school graduations. While hanging out at Deacon's barber shop, located in his basement at 5151 Columbo Street. Kenny and Lamar were best friends, enjoying their early twenties, living carefree. The two have a chance encounter at a campus party with Jennifer and Heather, two college students from the suburbs. Jennifer's attraction towards Kenny was obvious. Kenny eventually gives in to her sexuall advances and she falls in love with him. But will the love last once Jennifer's secrets are revealed to her wealthy dad and fiance? Or will Kenny become the scapegoat?

Book Collaborative Public Management

Download or read book Collaborative Public Management written by Robert Agranoff and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local governments do not stand alone—they find themselves in new relationships not only with state and federal government, but often with a widening spectrum of other public and private organizations as well. The result of this re-forming of local governments calls for new collaborations and managerial responses that occur in addition to governmental and bureaucratic processes-as-usual, bringing locally generated strategies or what the authors call "jurisdiction-based management" into play. Based on an extensive study of 237 cities within five states, Collaborative Public Management provides an in-depth look at how city officials work with other governments and organizations to develop their city economies and what makes these collaborations work. Exploring the more complex nature of collaboration across jurisdictions, governments, and sectors, Agranoff and McGuire illustrate how public managers address complex problems through strategic partnerships, networks, contractual relationships, alliances, committees, coalitions, consortia, and councils as they function together to meet public demands through other government agencies, nonprofit associations, for-profit entities, and many other types of nongovernmental organizations. Beyond the "how" and "why," Collaborative Public Management identifies the importance of different managerial approaches by breaking them down into parts and sequences, and describing the many kinds of collaborative activities and processes that allow local governments to function in new ways to address the most nettlesome public challenges.

Book Communities of Resistance and Resilience in the Post Industrial City

Download or read book Communities of Resistance and Resilience in the Post Industrial City written by Daniel Holland and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the grassroots community revitalization movement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Lyon, France, between 1980 and 2010, an extension of the post-WWII civil rights campaign that is rarely considered. It tells the story of residents' attempts to improve their communities through social capital or people power. In positive ways, citizens created vibrant, attractive neighborhoods. But their actions also generated unintended consequences, such as high real estate prices and minority displacement that threatened to unravel their hard work. Communities of Resistance and Resilience is an ethnographic survey that relies on oral histories, archival research, on-the-ground site surveys, and the author’s personal experience as a neighborhood reinvestment practitioner for more than 30 years. It brings to life stories that would otherwise remain obscured, such as the lingering impact of the March for Equality and Against Racism, organized in Lyon in 1983, and the formation of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group in Pittsburgh in 1988, both of which launched national movements. This is of great use to scholars of transatlantic history as well as a general audience interested in modern social movements in the United States and France.
