He who is near to Nature's heart, is very near his Creator. It is the love of all that is outdoors, and Dame Experience's sharp but unforgettable lessons, together with the many things we have learned from books and friends, that have made it possible for us to write this volume. May it make warm friends and help others to enjoy their garden more than ever before. It has been our earnest effort to tell the simple, necessary things, leaving the deep and scientific parts to those who make such things their life-study. Book The Home Vegetable Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home Vegetable Garden Classic Reprint written by Henry Albert Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Vegetable Garden Fig. 1. - Fall vegetable gardens grown by students at the University Farm, Davis. Almost all varieties of vegetables were planted the third week of August, and almost all were harvested before the middle of December. The varieties and crops grown were Snowball cauliflower, Copenhagen Market cabbage, Southern Curled mustard, Scotch Curled kale, Paris White Cos lettuce, New York lettuce, Chantenay carrots, Detroit Dark Red beets, Paoting Chinese cabbage, Purple Vienna kohlrabi, Large White rutabaga, Purple Top White Globe turnip, Savoy spinach, Prickly Winter spinach, green bunch onions from dry sets, and Bountiful beans. The garden should be located near a faucet or an irrigation line in order to insure an adequate supply of water. Most vegetables need considerable moisture to keep them growing and to make them good edible quality. It is also best to have the garden protected from the prevailing winds, especially if these are drying and severe. Proximity to large trees should be avoided, as most crops need full sunlight, and as the trees use the plant food and soil moisture for a considerable distance on all sides. Some crops, however, such as spinach and lettuce, do fairly well growing in partial shade, especially during the warm season. Book The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden

Download or read book The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden written by Karen Newcomb and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best books for beginning and experienced vegetable gardeners, this clear, straightforward, easy-to-read gardening bestseller (over 500,000 copies sold) uses organic, biodynamic methods to produce large amounts of vegetables in very small spaces. To accommodate today's lifestyles, a garden needs to fit easily into a very small plot, take as little time as possible to maintain, require a minimum amount of water, and still produce prolifically. That's exactly what a postage stamp garden does. Postage stamp gardens are as little as 4 by 4 feet, and, after the initial soil preparation, they require very little extra work to produce a tremendous amount of vegetables--for instance, a 5-by-5-foot bed will produce a minimum of 200 pounds of vegetables. When first published 40 years ago, the postage stamp techniques, including closely planted beds rather than rows, vines and trailing plants grown vertically to free up space, and intercropping, were groundbreaking. Revised for an all new generation of gardeners, this edition includes brand new information on the variety of heirloom vegetables available today and how to grow them the postage stamp way. Now, in an ever busier world, the postage stamp intensive gardening method continues to be invaluable for gardeners who wish to weed, water, and work a whole lot less yet produce so much more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Garden: A Book on Vegetable and Small-Fruit Growing, for the Use of the Amateur Gardener The writer of this little book is a firm believer in a vegetable garden for every family so situated that it can have one. This for several reasons: F int - A garden, well cared for, will furnish half if not more of the living for a family of ordinary size, provided, of course, it is made up of persons who are fond of vegetables. Not only is this possible through the summer, but the year round, for many of our best vegetables can be carried through the winter in fine con dition with but very little trouble. And it need not be a large garden to do this. The old theory - Which was not a theory, after all, but a fact - that a little piece of land, well tilled is a source of revenue that the wise man cannot afford to overlook, holds true in this case as much as it does when the farm is considered. I know of no other way in which such a goodly share of the family living can be secured; therefore I urge the making of a garden as a means of support for the family.
