Download or read book Sacramento s Greenhaven Pocket Area written by Carol Ann Gregory and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greenhaven/Pocket community is located just southwest of downtown Sacramento. Geographically, its unique location is within a meandering bend of the Sacramento River, thus termed "the Pocket" because it is bounded by the Sacramento River to the north, west, and south. Captured here in over 180 vintage images are the sorrows and triumphs of the area's earliest settlers, encompassing the continents of the world and spanning over a century. The Greenhaven/Pocket area was a rural farming community for 110 years before suburban development, with the most significant group of people contributing to the area's history and identity being Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Terceira. They began arriving a few years after the Gold Rush and by 1880, almost half of the Portuguese population in Sacramento County was within these townships that encompassed and surrounded the Riverside/Pocket area. Pictured here is the evolution of this thriving community, from the earliest founding families and their sprawling ranches, to the Japanese settlement of World War I, and finally to the innovative Greenhaven 70 plan development in the 1960s that laid the foundation for today's community.
Download or read book Garcia Bend HB written by Frank Tedrow II and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garcia Bend (HB) By: Frank Tedrow II This is a story about much more than a place. It’s a story about a group of friends who found the perfect place to party. It’s about an iconic time from 1977 to 1982 when a group of friends became a family. Garcia Bend was a small patch of land located between the Sacramento River on one side and Pocket Road on the other, surrounded by farmland. But for the Party Animals, the original founders of Bums Beach, it was a hideout, a clubhouse, a paradise. But all good parties come to an end. In this volume, Frank Tedrow II revisits the final weekend of the Garcia Bend party, two days of drugs, friends, mayhem, and brotherly love. The last perfect time, when this crew of close friends were still a family. That is what this book is about. Garcia Bend the people, not Garcia Bend the place.

Familiarity sells in fiction. Give 'em the familiar because it sells big. Don't given 'em Crystal Pepsi when they expect classic Coca Cola to be brown. In other words, the same Cinderella or Cinderfella story sells in ancient China or Egypt as it did in Europe in 1900 as it does today in Internet romances or virtual worlds avatars. So two points, 1) familiarity and 2) universal values always make best sellers in sagas, novels, multimedia books, and scripts or games.

Download or read book Linking Ecosystem Function to Microbial Diversity written by Anne E. Bernhard and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the link between microbial diversity and ecosystem processes is a fundamental goal of microbial ecologists, yet we still have a rudimentary knowledge of how changes in diversity affect nutrient cycling and energy transfer in ecosystems. Due to the complexity of the problem, many published studies on this topic have been conducted in artificial or manipulated systems. Although researchers have begun to expose some possible mechanisms using these approaches, most have not yet been able to produce conclusive results that relate directly to natural systems. The few studies that have explored the link between diversity and activity in natural systems have typically focused on specific nutrient cycles or processes, such as nitrification, denitrification, and organic carbon degradation pathways, and the microbes that mediate them. What we have learned from these studies is that there are often strong associations between the physical and chemical features of the environment, the composition of the microbial communities, and their activities, but the rules that govern these associations have not been fully elucidated. These earlier studies of microbial diversity and processes in natural systems provide a framework for additional studies to broaden our understanding of the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem function. The problem is complex, but with recent advances in sequencing technology, -omics, and in-situ measurements of ecosystem processes and their applications to microbial communities, making direct connections between ecosystem function and microbial diversity seems more tractable than ever.
