Scholarly work in savings, debt, household finance, and behavior economics will benefit from this pioneering study that provides real-life context for some of the most important issues of our day." ---Tom Shapiro, Brandeis University "The central contribution of the book is to use original qualitative research to provide readers with a nuanced understanding of the financial difficulties facing low-income households, their financial decision-making processes, and their paths to saving and building assets over time. The book provides an essential corrective to the unidimensional view of poor households as unable and unwilling to save." ---Michael Barr, University of Michigan In Striving to Save, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden and Amanda Moore McBride examine savings in eighty-four working families with low incomes, including fifty-nine families who participated in a groundbreaking program of matched savings and financial education. In-depth interviews with these families, along with savings and survey data, shed light on saving in low-income households. The book concludes with recommended public policy approaches for increasing savings in households that are striving to save. Margaret Sherrard Sherraden is Professor of Social Work at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Amanda Moore McBride is Assistant Professor of Social Work at Washington University, St. Louis.

Book Military personnel DOD s Predatory Lending Report Addressed Mandated Issues but Support is Limited for Some Findings and Recommendations

Download or read book Military personnel DOD s Predatory Lending Report Addressed Mandated Issues but Support is Limited for Some Findings and Recommendations written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You requested that we review DOD's 2006 report on predatory lending practices. Specifically, we evaluated DOD's approach and support in preparing its mandated report on predatory lending practices. This report documents findings that we briefed to your offices on August 17, 2007. Enclosure I contains the briefing slides we presented. This briefing contributes to a larger GAO body of work on compensation and financial conditions of military personnel (see the list of related GAO products at the end of this report). In conducting our review, we limited the scope of our work to the types of loans that DOD identified as being predatory in its mandated 2006 report. We examined legislation that mandated the DOD report and regulations such as government-wide and DOD-wide standards for data quality. In addition to reviewing DOD's predatory lending report and the reports cited in that study, we reviewed GAO, Congressional Research Service, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Office of the Inspector General reports on related issues. We developed a tool to systematize our analysis of the quality of research studies and data sources DOD used as support in its report. We interviewed representatives and obtained documents from DOD and the federal agencies, military charity organizations, and consumer groups involved in the preparation of DOD's report as well as other groups whose perspectives were different from those provided in the DOD report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 12 million adults in the U.S. report they do not speak English well or at all. Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language appears to be linked to multiple dimensions of adult life in the U.S., including financial literacy -- the ability to make informed judgments and take effective actions regarding the current and future use and management of money. A recent Federal Act in 2009 mandated an examination of the relationship between fluency in the English language and financial literacy. This report examines the extent, if any, to which individuals with limited English proficiency are impeded in their financial literacy and conduct of financial affairs. Illustrations.

Book Retirement Income

Download or read book Retirement Income written by Charles Jeszeck and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-07 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As life expectancy increases, the risk that retirees will outlive their assets is a growing challenge. The shift from defined benefit (DB) pension plans to defined contribution (DC) plans also increases the responsibility for workers and retirees to make difficult decisions and manage their pension and other financial assets so that they have income throughout retirement. This report reviewed (1) strategies that experts recommend retirees employ to ensure income throughout retirement, (2) choices retirees have made for managing their pension and financial assets for generating income, and (3) policy options available to ensure income throughout retirement and their advantages and disadvantages. The report interviewed experts about strategies retirees should take; analyzed nationally representative data and studies about retirees' decisions; and interviewed experts and reviewed documents about related policy options.
