Book Gamma Ray Production Cross Sections of Proton Bombardment of Fluorine for Light Element Analysis and Depth Profiling

Download or read book Gamma Ray Production Cross Sections of Proton Bombardment of Fluorine for Light Element Analysis and Depth Profiling written by Monica Pham and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the interdependence of fusion reactor performance and the surface conditions of the plasma facing components (PFC), diagnostic techniques that monitor the conditions of PFCs are useful. One ion beam analysis (IBA) diagnostic technique utilizes particle induced gamma emission (PIGE) analysis to diagnose the conditions of PFCs. Gamma production differential cross section data is essential to PIGE because it provides a way predict and interpret data. Fluorine may be a candidate for this technique because it is low-Z and not typically intrinsic to fusion reactors. However, differential cross section measurements for 19F(p, [alpha] [gamma])16O do not exist yet. Differential cross section measurements for the 19F(p, [alpha] [gamma])16O reaction have not been measured primarily because of the difficulty of deconvolving overlapped peaks in the gamma ray spectra of the reaction. This work presents, for the first time, the 6.13 MeV gamma production differential cross section for the 19F(p, [alpha] [gamma])16O reaction in the 840 to 1520 keV energy range. Although there exists gamma yield data for this reaction in Dababneh et al. [1], yield measurements can only be used as a comparison or for relative measurements. Additionally, previous yield measurements relied on integrating the entire spectrum with approximate bounds of 4.5 to 9 MeV likely due to overlap of peaks. In this work, yield of the 6.13 MeV full energy peak was obtained by deconvolving overlapping peaks by utilizing the constant ratio of the double escape and the single escape peaks. The subsequent yield curve was converted to differential cross section. The presented differential cross section measurements expands current knowledge and contributes to diagnostic techniques that utilize gamma production reactions.

Book Elemental Analysis by Particle Accelerators

Download or read book Elemental Analysis by Particle Accelerators written by Zeev Alfassi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elemental Analysis by Particle Accelerators describes the theory, methodology, and applications for a wide variety of sensitive, non-destructive methods of analysis capable of both high selectivity and multielemental determinations. Specific methods discussed include radioactive methods, particle backscatter analysis, recoil techniques, and nuclear reaction analysis. The use of multielemental PIXE and PIGME analyses of "real world" thick samples in environmental studies, trace element applications in biology, and provenance studies in archaeology are also covered. The book is a useful reference for practicing specialists and an essential text for students.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 661 tures, such as occurs in stellar atmospheres and in thermonuc1ear processes, will not be considered 1. Because photoelectric absorption predominates completely at low photon energies, and penetration theory is elementary under these conditions, attention is directed in this artic1e to photon energies above ""20 kev. On the high energy side, this artic1e does not cover the cascade shower processes which are dealt 2 with in cosmic ray studies • In this connection it is recalled that the cascade shower process, which involves electrons and positrons besides X rays, becomes predominant above 10 Mev in heavy elements, and above 100 Mev in light ones. Theories developed for the study of cascade showers in cosmic rays rely on assumptions about the prob ability of interactions with matter which are adequate only at energies of the order of 1 Gev or more. Below this energy there is a gap in which penetration phenomena are qualitatively known and understood but have not yet been calculated in detail. A few detailed experimental studies which have been made at energies up to 300 Mev will be reviewed in this article.

Book Understanding and Using Gamma Rays

Download or read book Understanding and Using Gamma Rays written by Alison Eldridge and published by Enslow Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum can be seen by the human eye, people depend on the energy from the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum every day. Gamma rays might be familiar from comic books and superhero movies, but few know that gamma ray bursts are the most spectacular explosions observed in the universe. This book gives readers a look into the discovery, history, and uses of gamma rays. It's a perfect complement to the Next Generation Science Standards in electromagnetic radiation, and a perfect glimpse into how electromagnetic radiation is affecting us every day.
