Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief, cutting-edge introduction to the brightest cosmic phenomena known to science Gamma-ray bursts are the brightest—and, until recently, among the least understood—cosmic events in the universe. Discovered by chance during the cold war, these evanescent high-energy explosions confounded astronomers for decades. But a rapid series of startling breakthroughs beginning in 1997 revealed that the majority of gamma-ray bursts are caused by the explosions of young and massive stars in the vast star-forming cauldrons of distant galaxies. New findings also point to very different origins for some events, serving to complicate but enrich our understanding of the exotic and violent universe. What Are Gamma-Ray Bursts? is a succinct introduction to this fast-growing subject, written by an astrophysicist who is at the forefront of today's research into these incredible cosmic phenomena. Joshua Bloom gives readers a concise and accessible overview of gamma-ray bursts and the theoretical framework that physicists have developed to make sense of complex observations across the electromagnetic spectrum. He traces the history of remarkable discoveries that led to our current understanding of gamma-ray bursts, and reveals the decisive role these phenomena could play in the grand pursuits of twenty-first century astrophysics, from studying gravity waves and unveiling the growth of stars and galaxies after the big bang to surmising the ultimate fate of the universe itself. What Are Gamma-Ray Bursts? is an essential primer to this exciting frontier of scientific inquiry, and a must-read for anyone seeking to keep pace with cutting-edge developments in physics today.

Download or read book X ray Binaries written by Walter H. G. Lewin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-16 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray binaries are some of the most varied and perplexing systems known to astronomers. The compact object which accretes mass from its companion star may be a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, whereas the donor star can be a 'normal' star or a white dwarf. The various combinations differ widely in their behaviour, and this timely volume provides a unique reference of our knowledge to date of all of them.Fifteen specially written chapters by a team of the world's foremost researchers in the field explore all aspects of the X-ray binaries. They cover the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical and radio properties of these violent systems and address key issues such as: how were these systems formed, and what will be their fate; how can we understand X-ray bursts, and how the quasi-periodic oscillations; what is the connection between millisecond radio pulsars and low-mass X-ray binaries; and how does the magnetic field of a neutron star decay? This long awaited review provides graduate students and researchers with the standard reference on X-ray binaries for many years to come.

Their story is told here by some of the scientists who participated in their discovery and, after many decades of false starts, solved the problem of their origin. Fourteen chapters by active researchers in the field present a detailed history of the discovery, a comprehensive theoretical description of GRB central engine and emission models, a discussion of GRB host galaxies and a guide to how GRBs can be used as cosmological tools. Observations are grouped into three sets from the satellites CGRO, BeppoSAX and Swift, and followed by a discussion of multi-wavelength observations. This is the first edited volume on GRB astrophysics that presents a fully comprehensive review of the subject. Utilizing the latest research, Gamma-ray Bursts is an essential desktop companion for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics.

Book Very High Energy Gamma Rays from Binary Systems

Download or read book Very High Energy Gamma Rays from Binary Systems written by Hugh John Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from X-ray binary systems using the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov array. The historical background and basic principles of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy are briefly reviewed and an overview of the design and capabilities of the H.E.S.S. telescope system is presented. The broadband observational properties of X-ray binary systems and their relevance in a broader astrophysical context is also discussed. A review of the radiative emission mechanisms which relate to VHE gamma-ray emission in X-ray binaries is presented, with emphasis given to the leptonic emission processes of synchrotron radiation and inverse-Compton scattering. Intrinsic absorption processes which act to attenuate the emitted flux of VHE gamma-rays are also discussed. Three computer models are introduced which simulate aspects of the gamma-ray emission and absorption in X-ray binary systems. A detailed analysis of the VHE gamma-ray emission from the X-ray binary LS 5039 is presented and the relevant procedures for data selection, gamma-hadron separation and background estimation are discussed in some detail. Methods for the determination of detection significance and the calculation of gamma-ray fluxes are also reviewed and results are derived which apply specifically to LS 5039. A detailed temporal analysis of the gamma-ray signal from LS 5039 is presented, applying tests for secular, excess and periodic variability. Strong evidence is found for modulation of the observed gamma-ray flux on the orbital period of ~3.9 days. Following a brief discussion of the procedures required for spectral analysis of VHE gamma-ray data, results are presented for LS 5039 which reveal evidence for spectral variability which is correlated with the observed gamma-ray flux and therefore, the orbital phase of the binary system. The spectral and temporal characteristics of LS 5039 are then compared with the predictions of theoretical models in an attempt to explain the observed behaviour. Contemporaneous X-ray and VHE gamma-ray observations of three galactic microquasars using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and H.E.S.S. are presented. Although no gamma-ray detections are reported, the observations permit the derivation of upper limits to the VHE gamma-ray flux which correspond to episodes of known X-ray behaviour. The X-ray characteristics of each target are compared with pre-existing observational data to infer the presence or otherwise of relativistic outflows at the H.E.S.S. observation epochs. The implications of the gamma-ray non-detections are then discussed in the context of these inferred system properties. The results of a survey of the VHE gamma-ray emission associated with the positions of 125 known X-ray binaries are presented. Although no conclusive detections were obtained, tentative indications were found for a population of faint, spectrally hard gamma-ray sources associated with high-mass X-ray binary systems. The inferred characteristics of the indicated population show broad agreement with the measured properties of known gamma-ray-emitting X-ray binary systems like LS 5039.

Book The Biggest Bangs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan I. Katz
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2002-06-06
  • ISBN : 0198033338
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book The Biggest Bangs written by Jonathan I. Katz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray bursts are the most violent events since the birth of the universe. They are about ten times more energetic than the most powerful supernovae. At their peak, gamma-ray bursts are the brightest objects in space, about 100,000 times brighter than an entire galaxy. And yet until recently these titanic eruptions were the most mysterious events in astronomy. In The Biggest Bangs, astrophysicist Jonathan Katz offers a fascinating account of the scientific quest to unravel the mystery of these incredible phenomena. With an eye for colorful detail and a talent for translating scientific jargon into plain English, Katz ranges from the accidental discovery of gamma-ray bursts (by a Cold War satellite system monitoring the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty) to the frustrating but ultimately successful efforts to localize these bursts in distant galaxies. He describes the theories, the equipment (the most recent breakthrough was made with a telescope you could carry under your arm), and the pioneers who have finally begun to explain these strange bursts. And along the way, he offers important lessons about science itself, arguing that "small science" is as valuable as institutionalized "big science," that observations are more the product of advances in technology than of theory, and that theory is only "the concentrated essence of experiment." With the advent of the space age a mere 40 years ago, we have grown used to strangeness in the universe--and confident in science's ability to explain it. In The Biggest Bangs, Jonathan Katz shows that there are still wonders out there that exceed the bounds of our imagination and defy our ability to understand them.
