Book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation A Crucial Window On The Extreme Universe

Download or read book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation A Crucial Window On The Extreme Universe written by Felix A Aharonian and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic γ-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. The great potential of this discipline offers impressive coverage of many “hot topics” of modern astrophysics and cosmology, such as the origin of galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays, particle acceleration and radiation processes under extreme astrophysical conditions, and the search for dark matter. The recent observational results and exciting theoretical predictions provide a strong rationale for a deep study of cosmic radiation with forthcoming satellite-borne and ground-based detectors in the so-called very high energy domain of the electromagnetic spectrum above 1010 eV.This invaluable book presents the motivations and highlights the principal objectives of the field, as well as demonstrates its intrinsic links to other branches of high energy astrophysics. Preference is given to three topical areas: (i) origin of cosmic rays; (ii) physics and astrophysics of relativistic jets; (iii) observational gamma ray cosmology. Also, an essential part of the book is devoted to the discussion of the principal mechanisms of production and absorption of energetic γ-rays in different astrophysical environments, as well as to the description of the detection methods of high energy cosmic γ-radiation.

Book The Advanced Composition Explorer Mission

Download or read book The Advanced Composition Explorer Mission written by C.T. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) was launched on August 25, 1997, carrying six high-resolution spectrometers that measure the abundances of the elements, isotopes, and ionic charge states of energetic nuclei in space. Data from these instruments is being used to measure and compare the composition of the solar corona, the nearby interstellar medium, and cosmic-ray sources in the Galaxy, and to study particle acceleration processes in a variety of environments. ACE also includes three instruments that monitor solar wind and energetic particle activity near the inner Lagrangian point, "1.5 million kilometers sunward of Earth, and provide continuous, real-time data to NOAA for use in forecasting space weather. Eleven of the articles in this volume review scientific progress and outline questions that ACE will address in solar, space-plasma, and cosmic-ray physics. Other articles describe the ACE spacecraft, the real-time solar-wind system, and the instruments used to measure energetic particle composition.

Book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging

Download or read book Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging written by Claus Grupen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-08 with total page 1251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.

Book Science With The New Generation Of High Energy Gamma ray Experiments Proceedings Of The Third Workshop

Download or read book Science With The New Generation Of High Energy Gamma ray Experiments Proceedings Of The Third Workshop written by Oriana Mansutti and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume provide a snapshot of the latest research and future plans for space-borne and ground-based experiments dedicated to the observation of the gamma-ray sky. The articles are authored by both seasoned veterans of the first dedicated gamma-ray missions, and young scientists entering the fascinating field of gamma-ray astrophysics. With the advent of gamma-ray instrumentation on spacecraft and large and sensitive ground-based detectors, new and unexpected phenomena have been discovered, such as gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray emission from blazars. The immense vitality of the field in the current “post-EGRET era” is witnessed by the numerous ongoing and forthcoming gamma-ray experiments documented here, complementary to various cosmic-ray, neutrino, astroparticle and X-ray projects.

Book Applied Gamma Ray Spectrometry

Download or read book Applied Gamma Ray Spectrometry written by C. E. Crouthamel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Gamma-Ray Spectrometry covers real life application of the gamma-ray and the devices used in their experimental studies. This book is organized into 9 chapters, and starts with discussions of the various decay processes, the possible interaction mechanisms of gamma radiation with matter, and the intrinsic and extrinsic variables, which affect the observed gamma-ray and X-ray spectra. The subsequent chapters deal with the properties and fabrication of scintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, and proportional gas counters. These chapters present some of the most widely utilized applications of these detectors, with a particular emphasis to the activation analysis. These topics are followed by reviews of the description of basic equipment, such as amplifiers, analyzers, special spectrometer arrangements, and detector shielding. Other chapters describe energy and time resolution and quantitative calibration. The quantitative and qualitative interpretation of the spectra is also explained, along with the calibration of the detectors. The last chapter considers the analytical applications of gamma-ray and X-ray spectrometry in tracer studies, activation analysis, fission product studies, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. This book will be of value to analytical chemists and analytical chemistry researchers.
