This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small city of Macao--formerly a Portuguese colony, now a Special Administrative Region of China--liberalized its gaming industry in 2002. Per capita income has more than doubled in five years and the gaming operators have outstripped their Las Vegas counterparts in revenue and profits. But rapid economic growth has also brought social and political problems. In this structured survey of modern Macao, 15 experts examine the effects of massive foreign investment, the problems of governance, and increasing public policy challenges in a time of rapid change and potential social instability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years after the actual implementation of its casino deregulation policy, Macao has surpassed Las Vegas as the world’s top gambling destination in terms of annual turnover. Also, various recent surveys have put Macao at the very top of the list in terms of per capita GDP, as its economy grew shortly after the resumption of Chinese sovereignty. How could a tiny city without any natural resources on the southern coast of China have managed to achieve such a miraculous level of development? This book presents an unparalleled study of Macao’s economic dynamism and its gambling industry not only by merging historical and current developments, but also by presenting solid subjective and objective indicators and evidence. It offers an indispensable resource for students, researchers, and general readers looking to understand Macao’s gambling miracle.

Book Welfare Reform in East Asia

Download or read book Welfare Reform in East Asia written by Chak Kwan Chan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many Western countries, social welfare payments are increasingly being made conditional on recipients doing voluntary work or attending job training courses, a system known as "welfare-to-work" or "workfare". Although social welfare in Asia is very different to the West, with much smaller social welfare budgets, a strong self-reliance and a much higher dependency on family networks to provide support, the workfare approach is also being adopted in many Asian countries. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of how welfare reform around work is implemented in leading East Asian. Based on the experiences of seven East Asian economies - including China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau - this book critically analyses current trends; the social, economic and political factors which lead to the implementation of workfare; compares the similarities and differences of workfare in the different polities and assesses their effectiveness.

Book Colonial Policing and the Transnational Legacy

Download or read book Colonial Policing and the Transnational Legacy written by Conor O'Reilly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation represents the first study to examine the historical evolution and shifting global dynamics of policing across the Lusophone community. With contributions from a multi-disciplinary range of experts, it traces the role of policing within and across settings that are connected by the shared legacy of Portuguese colonialism. Previously neglected within studies of the globalisation of policing, the Lusophone experience brings novel insights to established analyses of colonial, post-colonial and transnational policing. This compilation draws research attention to the policing peculiarities of the Lusophone community. It proposes new cultural settings within which to test dominant theories of policing research. It uncovers an important piece of the jigsaw that is policing across the globe. Key research questions that it addresses include: • What were the patterns of policing, and policing transfers, across Portuguese colonial settings? • How did Portugal’s dual status as both fascist regime and imperial power shape its late colonial policing? • What have been the different experiences of post-colonial and transitional policing across the former Portuguese colonies? • In what ways are Lusophone nations contributing to, and indeed shaping, patterns of transnational policing? • What comparative lessons can be drawn from the Lusophone policing experience?

Book The Sports Development of Hong Kong and Macau

Download or read book The Sports Development of Hong Kong and Macau written by Brian Bridges and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s sports history and its contemporary role in the global sporting community have become well-known, but the sporting history and development of China’s two Special Administrative Regions – Hong Kong and Macau – have not received the coverage they deserve either in their historical contexts or since the handovers of control to the People's Republic. By drawing on a multi-national group of scholars and practitioners, this volume makes a unique contribution to the understanding of sports development in greater China. The essays in this anthology examine the evolution of key sports, the hosting of sporting mega-events, the nexus of sports and politics, identity issues, and the role of sporting diplomacy. The chapters provide not only an analysis of colonial legacies but also in-depth accounts of the challenges to and outcomes of sports development in Hong Kong after 1997 and Macau after 1999. The chapters in this book were originally published in various special issues of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book Media Representations of Macau s Gaming Industry in Greater China

Download or read book Media Representations of Macau s Gaming Industry in Greater China written by Yuxi Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first linguistic study that combines CL and CDA to compare the media representations of Macau’s gaming industry in English-language newspapers published in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. An analytical framework based on the notion of the extended units of meaning of a lexical item (Sinclair, 2004) is adopted to examine the ideological stances regarding Macau’s gaming industry among three English-language newspapers published in the three Chinese territories mentioned above by comparing the patterns of co-selection of shared and unique words and phraseologies. The book’s findings confirm that the news media in these three territories differ in their ideological stances. Moreover, the book offers readers a fresh perspective on Macau by exploring how the region and its gaming industry are represented in three news article corpora. Thus, it provides unique insights into the similarities and differences among these three territories. Further, the research suggests that the methods adopted in this book can be replicated to examine and compare the news and political discourses in a variety of contexts. Accordingly, the book represents a valuable resource not only for students majoring in linguistics, media studies, communication, journalism, etc., but also for researchers in the fields of corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, etc.

Book The Casino Card and Betting Game Reader

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casino games and traditional card games have rich and idiosyncratic histories, complex subcultures and player practices, and facilitate the flow of billions of dollars each year through casinos and card rooms, and between professional players and amateurs. They have nevertheless been overlooked by game scholars due to the negative ethical weight of “gambling” – with such games pathologized and labelled as deviance or mental illness, few look beyond to unpick the games, their players, and their communities. The Casino, Card and Betting Game Reader offers 25 chapters studying the communities playing these games, the distinctive cultures and practices that have emerged around them, their activities and beliefs and interpersonal relationships, and how these games influence – both positively and negatively – the lives and careers of millions of game players around the world. Book Transnational Penal Cultures

Download or read book Transnational Penal Cultures written by Vivien Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on three key stages of the criminal justice process, discipline, punishment and desistance, and incorporating case studies from Asia, the Americas, Europe, Africa and Australia, the thirteen chapters in this collection are based on exciting new research that explores the evolution and adaptation of criminal justice and penal systems, largely from the early nineteenth century to the present. They range across the disciplinary boundaries of History, Criminology, Law and Penology. Journeying into and unlocking different national and international penal archives, and drawing on diverse analytical approaches, the chapters forge new connections between historical and contemporary issues in crime, prisons, policing and penal cultures, and challenge traditional Western democratic historiographies of crime and punishment and categorisations of offenders, police and ex-offenders. The individual chapters provide new perspectives on race, gender, class, urban space, surveillance, policing, prisonisation and defiance, and will be essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of criminal justice, law, police, transportation, slavery, offenders and desistance from crime.

Book European Yearbook of Constitutional Law 2020

Download or read book European Yearbook of Constitutional Law 2020 written by Ernst Hirsch Ballin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-27 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Yearbook of Constitutional Law (EYCL) is an annual publication devoted to the study of constitutional law. It aims to provide a forum for in-depth analysis and discussion of new developments in the field, both in Europe and beyond. This second volume examines the constitutional positioning of cities across space and time. Unrelenting urbanisation means that most people are, or soon will be, living in cities and that city administrations become, in many respects, their quintessential governing units. Cities are places where State power is operationalised and concretised; where laws and government policies transform from parchment objectives to practical realities. In a similar vein, cities are also places for the realisation of the constitutional rights and liberties enjoyed by individuals. The book is organised around three sets of relations that await further unpacking in theory as well as practice: that between cities and other institutions in the national constitutional architecture; that between cities and their inhabitants; and that between cities and international organisations. The contributions to this book show the marked diversity in the role and powers available to cities in Europe and beyond, and identify principles and approaches to help stipulate new ways of thinking about the legal role and relevance of cities going forward. Ernst Hirsch Ballin is distinguished university professor at Tilburg University and vice-dean for research of Tilburg Law School. Gerhard van der Schyff is associate professor at Tilburg Law School, Department of Public Law and Governance. Maarten Stremler is lecturer at Maastricht University, Faculty of Law, Department of Public Law. Maartje De Visser is associate professor at SMU School of Law, Singapore.

Book Macau 20 Years after the Handover

Download or read book Macau 20 Years after the Handover written by Meng U Ieong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the major social and political changes in the city of Macau during its first 20 years under the "One Country, Two Systems" arrangement with Mainland China. Despite the long-standing image of Macau as Asia’s Las Vegas, it is a city that has changed a great deal since its return to China. Equally, despite this return, it retains a unique social, economic and political character, distinct both from the Mainland of China and from its larger neighbour, Hong Kong. The chapters in this book examine the detail of this uniqueness from a range of perspectives, including the gambling industry, police-society relations, media usage patterns and protest movements. Analysing the state of affairs 20 years after the city’s return to China, they also attempt to anticipate its future trajectory. This is a valuable guide for scholars of Asian, and particularly Chinese, urban politics that will be of interest to academics and students looking to better understand the particularities of Macau.
