Download or read book Game Day Gangsters written by Curtis Fogel and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the complicated interaction between sport and law, much is revealed about the perception and understanding of consent and tolerable deviance. When a football player steps onto the field, what deviations from the rules of the game are considered acceptable? And what risks has the player already accepted by voluntarily participating in the sport? In the case of Canadian football, acts of on-field violence, hazing, and performance-enhancing drug use that would be considered criminal outside the context of sport are tolerated and even promoted by team and league administrators. The manner in which league review committees and the Canadian legal system understand such actions highlights the challenges faced by those looking to protect players from the dangers of the sport. Although there has been some discussion of legal and institutional reforms dealing with crime and deviance in Canadian sport, little exists in the way of sports law, with most cases falling into the legal categories of criminal, administrative, or civil law. In Game-Day Gangsters, Fogel argues for a review of the systems by which Canadian football is governed and analyzes the reforms proposed by football leagues and by players. Juxtaposing material from interviews with football players and administrators and from media files and legal cases, he explores the discrepancies between the players’ own experiences and the institutional handling of disciplinary matters in junior, university, and professional football leagues across the country.

Book The Game on New Year s Day

Download or read book The Game on New Year s Day written by Ted Brack and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hibs and Hearts first locked horns on Christmas Day 1875. Hearts won 1-0 and even the most ardent Hibs fan would have to admit that the Tynecastle team has had the better of things in contests for local bragging rights over the 135 years which have followed. However, Hibs have had their moments too and the 6-2 derby win at Easter Road inspired by Franck Sauzee and Russell Latapy in October 2000 is a recent example of green and white triumph. No Hibs win over their local rivals, though, has come close to the epic 7-0 victory which was recorded by the great Turnbull's Tornadoes team on the first day of 1973. On the day that the United Kingdom entered the European Economic Community, Hibs carved out their own slice of history by vanquishing Hearts by seven clear goals on their own turf at Tynecastle. As the 40th anniversary of this iconic encounter approaches, Ted Brack describes the great match and the events which preceded it and tells the story of what has happened to the players who took part in it in the decades which have followed.Ted's book is written from his own experience and draws heavily on the first-hand memories and reminiscences of other supporters and the outstanding players who wore the green and white of Hibernian on that seminal day. Ted has spoken at length to players like ice cool goalkeeper Jim Herriot, world class full back John Brownlie, rock solid centre half Jim Black, classy and composed sweeper John Blackley, midfield maestros Alex Edwards and Alex Cropley, goal scorer supreme Jimmy O'Rourke and the peerless captain Pat Stanton. The players' honesty and insight make this book the definitive account of a match which still boasts the record competitive winning margin between Edinburgh's Big Two - Hearts supporters please note. "The Game on New Year's Day" is a must read for Hibees and should bring some cheer after their recent Cup disappointments.

Book Meeting the Mets A Quirky History of a Quirky Team

Download or read book Meeting the Mets A Quirky History of a Quirky Team written by Thomas Droleskey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the Mets: A Quirky History of a Quirky Team is a volume one of a two-part retrospective on the history of the New York Mets, a team that is now in its fifty-second season of play. The author, Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey, attended over 1600 games at the Polo Grounds and William A. Shea Municipal Stadium between July 15, 1962, and July 16, 2002. While he has not attended games since that point for reasons that are described in the book, he was pretty visible in the stands as a very unofficial cheerleader for over a quarter of a century, known as "The Lone Ranger of Shea Stadium." Droleskey provides a personal retrospective on the origins of the Mets, highlighting some of the quirks of a quirky team, including memories of utterly meaningless games that might put a smile or two on the faces of those who have followed the team over the years. The books contains lots and lots of trivia about the Mets and baseball, interspersed with personal many bits of cultural trivia and history.
