Download or read book Unbuilt Environments written by Jonathan Peyton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latter half of the twentieth century, industrial pioneers came to British Columbia with grand plans for resource development projects, many of which never materialized. Unbuilt Environments argues that these kinds of projects have lasting impacts on the natural and human environment – even when they fail. Jonathan Peyton examines a range of archival materials in five case studies. Looking at a closed asbestos mine, an abandoned rail grade, an imagined series of hydroelectric installations, a failed LNG export facility, and a transmission line, Peyton finds that past development failures continue to shape contemporary resource conflicts in the region.

Download or read book Game in the Garden written by George Colpitts and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shared use of wild animals has helped to determine social relations between Native peoples and newcomers. In later settlement periods, controversy about subsistence hunting and campaigns of local conservation associations drew lines between groups in communities, particularly Native peoples, immigrants, farmers, and urban dwellers. In addition to examining grassroots conservation activities, Colpitts identifies early slaughter rituals, iconographic traditions, and subsistence strategies that endured well into the interwar years in the twentieth century. Drawing primarily on local and provincial archival sources, he analyzes popular meanings and booster messages discernible in taxidermy work, city nature museums, and promotional photography.

Book excerpt: Excavation of a number of pit house sites at Anahim Lake in the central plateau of British Columbia has resulted in the definition of five components, the last two attributed to the Chilcotin. There are significant resemblances between these two components and Athabaskan complexes recorded elsewhere in North America. In this second part of this publication, analysis of the vertebrate remains from Potlatch site reveal much about the subsistence of the Chilcotin. Significant changes occurred in the percentage of vertebrate remains through time. Evidence of butchering and artifactual modification are discussed. Range changes of several species are of zoological interest.

Book The Buffalo Head

Download or read book The Buffalo Head written by R. M. Patterson and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wildest, loveliest and least-travelled region of Alberta was R.M. Patterson’s home territory in the 1930s and ’40s. The Buffalo Head ranch was located in the foothills of the majestic Canadian Rockies. With the mountains as a backdrop, this dude ranch hosted visitors from around the world. Patterson bought it from its founder, a wild Italian named George Pocaterra, and explored the steep valleys and high mountain passes. Patterson’s tales of the ranch in The Buffalo Head culminate with a fantastic story of meeting a growling grizzly while crossing the Continental Divide in an October snowstorm.
