Download or read book Laws of the Game written by Manfred Eigen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using game theory and examples of actual games people play, Nobel laureate Manfred Eigen and Ruthild Winkler show how the elements of chance and rules underlie all that happens in the universe, from genetic behavior through economic growth to the composition of music. To illustrate their argument, the authors turn to classic games--backgammon, bridge, and chess--and relate them to physical, biological, and social applications of probability theory and number theory. Further, they have invented, and present here, more than a dozen playable games derived from scientific models for equilibrium, selection, growth, and even the composition of RNA.

Book excerpt: "The open fire has its place as a method of heating single rooms or small houses or as an adjunct to other heating systems. Even when not actually needed, it adds much to the enjoyment of home life, if the fireplace is properly built. Comparatively few understand the principles involved in the construction of chimneys and fireplaces, and even experienced builders make mistakes which not only affect the efficiency of the heating unit but frequently create a menace to life and property. This bulletin is designed to give the householder and prospective builder, and especially the farmer or other rural resident who builds or superintends the building of his own home, a working knowledge of the principles to be observed in planning and building chimneys and fireplaces, which if the are observed will go a long way to promote the comfort of the home and insure the safety of the property."--Page ii.

Book excerpt: "Many know the annoyance and ill effects of wet basements and cellars, but comparatively few are familiar with good remedial methods. This bulletin gives needed information ... Many wet cellars might be dry had a little more attention been given to their location and construction and to grading the earth around them to shed water quickly. Frequently wet cellars can be made dry by gravity drainage of the site -- the simplest and surest method of avoiding ground-water troubles. Many dam cellars can easily be made less damp by better window ventilation. Water-tight construction and waterproofing and damp-proofing methods require good materials, but the most important thing -- in fact the vital thing -- is thorough workmanship in each and every detail."--Page ii.

Download or read book Gentlemen and Poachers written by Munsche and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-11-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English game laws have long been synonymous with petty tyranny. By imposing a property qualification on sportsmen, they effectively denied all but country gentlemen the right to take game or even to possess a gun. Those who challenged the gentry's monopoly were fined or imprisoned, usually after only a summary hearing by the local justice of the peace. In the early nineteenth century, it was claimed that one out of every four inmates in England's prisons was an offender against the game laws. Bitterly denounced at the time, they have continued to be condemned by historians as arbitrary, savage and unjust. This book is the first full scholarly examination of the English game laws. Based on material drawn from over two dozen archives - including judicial records, estate correspondence and personal diaries - it attempts to explain what the laws actually were, why they were passed, how they were enforced and why they were eventually repealed. The picture which emerges from this investigation challenges the conventional wisdom about the game laws in a number of important respects.
