Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling has always been a part of the human experience, and it is arguably now more popular than ever around the world. Fueled by changes in communication, commerce, and cultural values, gambling opportunities are seemingly ubiquitous. It is not surprising-given this societal context, students' perceptions regarding money, and their developmental stages-that many of them are engaged in gambling activity to one degree or another. Evidence suggests, however, that many in higher education remain unaware of the extent of the gambling activity in which students (and members of the staff and faculty for that matter) are engaged, the extent of problem gambling and pathological gambling among students, and the potential consequences of campus gambling for students and institutions. It has been noted that this generation of students grew up in an era when gambling was always commonplace and widely accepted. Given our history, the current popularity of gambling, and the role of gaming in the marketplace, it appears likely that gambling activity will continue to be a part of campus life. This volume of New Directions for Student Services offers information, suggestions for research, frameworks for policy development, and models for practice related to campus gambling. We hope it proves useful to students and faculty in higher education graduate preparation programs, student affairs professionals, other members of the higher education community, and all those interested in supporting student success. This is the 113th issue of the Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Student Services.

Book The House Always Wins

Download or read book The House Always Wins written by Franklin A. Newton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several national groups have identified youth gambling as a major public health concern that merits more attention, research and understanding. This is an important topic for college campuses since, even before the recent rise in gambling popularity, many students come to campus already having gambled at some point during their adolescence. This Executive Position Paper (epp) project explores the prevalence of gambling and problematic gambling behaviors among students at the University of Delaware and, specifically, students in particular affinity groups. An overview of the issue and background of the University are presented. Then, literature from a multitude of disciplines is examined and utilized to contextualize and illuminate a number of gambling related issues that many university campuses, including the University of Delaware community, face now and some issues that loom on the horizon. The data utilized in the project and discussions of the findings are detailed. Results show that the University of Delaware is neither immune to the prevalence of gambling nor the negative fallout from problematic gambling for individuals and the community, with several groups presenting higher participation in the problematic behaviors. Based on examination of literature as well as approaches and best practices of other institutions, recommendations for administrative and educational approaches to reduce the incidence of problem gambling behaviors on campus and to inform the campus community are suggested and encouraged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of gambling, particularly sports gambling, and how it has thrived in American culture. According to Davies and Abram, the culture of betting results from two complementary influences in American society: risk-taking and speculation. This is the first effort by academic writers to describe and interpret the history of sports wagering in the United States. Although many books have been written about 3how to bet and win, 4 Betting the Line presents a serious history of this popular activity in Colonial and Civil War eras to today, from early betting on horse racing and baseball to the modern venues of basketball and football. By considering topics as diverse as the business of a bookie, the expansion of legalized gambling, and the increase in popularity of televised sports, the authors offer readers an insightful look into a practice that has become commonplace in American popular culture. In a mere seventy years, the number of states where gambling is legal jumped from one to forty-eight. Yet Nevada remains the only state where sports betting is legal. This book challenges many long-standing myths and stereotypes that revolve around the enterprise, arguing that sports gambling is reflective of the American free enterprise culture.

Book excerpt: In His memoir, The Best Bet, Jamall Anderson tells the story of how his once rising career spiraled into gambling on games, and even betting against his own teammates. He reveals, for the first time, the role he played in the biggest gambling scandal in the history of NCAA College Football, and how it could easily happen today. Co-written with long time Tampa Bay Times columnist, Ernest Hooper, Anderson's journey details how his decisions at Boston College set off a chain of events that put him on a merry-go-round of disillusionment as he struggled to recapture the promise of his football glory days. Now, looking for closure twenty years after the scandal broke, Anderson offers a cautionary tale for aspiring athletes and the parents and the coaches who guide them. He seeks retribution through contribution. He shares his own failures and the seamy underside of college football that revolves aroung illegal wages, criminal mischief, and using prostitutes to help recruit high school athletes. The intoxicating freedom that came with being a rising star on a Catholic university campus, a lack of oversight by the coaches and administators guiding the Boston College program and society's ever-present temptations, proved to be a pitfall that Jamall couldn't overcome.

Book Predictors of Different Types of Recreational Gambling Among College Students

Download or read book Predictors of Different Types of Recreational Gambling Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined the prevalence, frequency, and predictors of gambling among young adult college students. Nine hundred and fourteen undergraduates from a Mid-Atlantic public university completed a survey to assess gambling behaviors and problems, along with various psychosocial factors that may account for gambling behaviors. Among the entire sample, 53% (n= 461) reported participating in some form of gambling activity during the past year. The most frequently endorsed gambling activity was playing board or card games for money, followed by playing the lottery, and betting on games of personal skill. In contrast to expectations, online gambling was not prevalent. Most student gamblers in this sample gambled for recreational reasons; only 2.5% and 1.5% fell in the problem or pathological range, respectively. Hierarchical regression analyses found different predictors for the two types of gambling, gaming activities and sports betting. Being male and high on novelty/excitement seeking were significantly related to the number of gaming activities participated in during the past year by college students. Binge drinking showed a strong trend as a predictor. For sports betting, being male accounted for the greatest amount of variance and binge drinking in the past year emerged as the only other significant predictor. Being Caucasian, however, showed a strong explanatory trend. Together, these findings provide valuable information about the predictors of college students' recreational gambling, which was found to represent the vast majority of all gambling behaviors among this sample of college students.
