Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War history of Galveston is one of the last untold stories from America's bloodiest war, despite the fact that Galveston was a focal point of hostilities throughout the conflict. As other Southern ports fell to the Union, Galveston emerged as one of the Confederacy's only lifelines to the outside world. When the war ended in 1865, Galveston was the only major port still in Confederate hands. In this beautifully written narrative history, Ed Cotham draws upon years of archival and on-site research, as well as rare historical photographs, drawings, and maps, to chronicle the Civil War years in Galveston. His story encompasses all the military engagements that took place in the city and on Galveston Bay, including the dramatic Battle of Galveston, in which Confederate forces retook the city on New Year's Day, 1863. Cotham sets the events in Galveston within the overall conduct of the war, revealing how the city's loss was a great strategic impediment to the North. Through his pages pass major figures of the era, as well as ordinary soldiers, sailors, and citizens of Galveston, whose courage in the face of privation and danger adds an inspiring dimension to the story.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle of Galveston, January 1st, 1863 As they stepped on board, the yellow stripe on my trousers caught their eyes, and noting the surprise depicted on their countenances, I took in the situation, and told them they were prisoners, giving them an account of the capture of the City three days before. Fortunately for me, before they discovered that 1 was without support, Captain John Payne of the Pilots came alongside from the City looking for a United States flag, to be used in decoying the Cambria into the harbor. Climbing on deck, he at once recognized Smith, exchanged greetings with him and calling me aside warned me as to Smith's dos perate character, and suggested that we had best get the men ashore at once, stating also that he had no arms. I slipped my revolver to him, retaining my cutlass, and we ordered them into their yawl, and the marines rowed us along side the Harriet Lane. I remained on deck with the pris oners, and Payne went below to report; Smith was at once taken in charge, removed to jail, Court Marshalled for desertion, and shot three days later. Magruder and Texas Marine commander Leon Smith against the armies of Isaac S. Burrell and naval forces under the command of William B. Renshaw. A Federal fleet of six ships assaulted the city on October 4, 1862, and the city surrendered after a four-day truce was agreed upon. However, by New Year's Day of 1863, Confederate artillery reinforcements had arrived, and Magruder coordinated a bold new attack and naval ruse with two Confederate gunboats to retake Galveston. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the oldest cities in Texas, Galveston has witnessed more than its share of tragedies. Devastating hurricanes, yellow fever epidemics, fires, a major Civil War battle and more cast a dark shroud on the city's legacy. Ghostly tales creep throughout the history of famous tourist attractions and historical homes. The altruistic spirit of a schoolteacher who heroically pulled victims from the floodwaters during the great hurricane of 1900 roams the Strand. The ghosts of Civil War soldiers march up and down the stairs at night and pace in front of the antebellum Rogers Building. The spirit of an unlucky man decapitated by an oncoming train haunts the railroad museum, moving objects and crying in the night. Kathleen Shanahan Maca explores these and other haunted tales from the Oleander City.
