Book First Principles Study of Structural Electronic and Mechanical Properties of Lead Selenide and Lead Telluride

Download or read book First Principles Study of Structural Electronic and Mechanical Properties of Lead Selenide and Lead Telluride written by John E. Petersen (III.) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lead chalcogenides, most notably lead selenide (PbSe) and lead telluride (PbTe), have become an active area of research due to their thermoelectric properties. The high figure of merit (zT) of these materials has brought much attention to them, due to their ability to convert waste heat into electricity. Recent efforts, such as applying pressure or doping, have shown an increase in thermoelectric efficiency. Variation in application and synthesis conditions gives rise to a need for analysis of structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of these materials at different pressures. In addition to the NaCl structure at ambient conditions, lead chalcogenides have a dynamic orthorhombic (Pnma) intermediate pressure phase and a higher pressure, yet stable, CsCl phase. By altering the lattice constant, the application of external pressure is simulated; this has notable effects on total ground-state energy, band gap, and structural phase. Using the Projector Augmented Wave (PAW) Method and the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) in Density Functional Theory (DFT), the phase transition pressures are calculated by finding the differences in enthalpy from total energy calculations. For each phase, elastic constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and Young's modulus are calculated, and the NaCl phase is studied with typical dopants, both n-type (Bi, In, and I) and p-type (Na and Tl). Pugh's ratio is employed to give insight on the brittleness of the materials and phases studied. In addition to structural and mechanical properties, the band structure and density of states are analyzed at varying pressures, paying special note to thermoelectric implications. The results presented here will be useful to guide future experiments toward the search for structurally stable thermoelectric materials. Several mechanical properties predicted here are ready to be confirmed by experimental works.

Book Lead Telluride tin Telluride

Download or read book Lead Telluride tin Telluride written by M. Neuberger and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The data sheets present a compilation of a wide range of electronic properties for lead telluride, tin telluride and the lead-tin-tellurium ternary system. The energy band structure is thoroughly reviewed and included are effective mass and dielectric constant. Electrical properties include mobility, resistivity, lifetime and piezoresistance. The various thermal and magnetic properties such as Debye temperature, thermal conductivity, phonon dispersion and the Seebeck, Nernst and Ettingshausen coefficients are reported. The g-factor and magnetic susceptibility are given. The optical properties, absorption, refractive index and reflectivity are reported; also photoconductivity, photoelectric emission and laser effects. Each property is compiled over the widest possible range of parameters, including bulk and film samples. A data table which includes a wide range of mechanical, physical and thermal properties is included as well as a summary of crystal structure and phase transitions. A general discussion of preparation methods and device applications is given. (Author).

Book Development of Techniques for Preparing Homogeneous Single Crystals of Lead Telluride Lead Selenide and Lead Sulfide

Download or read book Development of Techniques for Preparing Homogeneous Single Crystals of Lead Telluride Lead Selenide and Lead Sulfide written by J. F. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In previous study on the project of the purification of PbTe by vacuum sublimation, it was shown that sublimation is an effective means of reducing the concentration of certain impurities in PbTe and of preparing relatively low-carrier concentration, high-mobility crystals of PbTe. Some additional experiments on the process were accomplished this quarter. Some effort was shifted to a study of the effects of impurities in PbTe. The effects of platinum and mercury are now under study and are discussed in the report. (Author).

Book An Investigation of Energy Band Structure and Electronic Properties of Lead Sulfide and Lead Selenide

Download or read book An Investigation of Energy Band Structure and Electronic Properties of Lead Sulfide and Lead Selenide written by Sohrab Rabii and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Augmented Plane Wave Method of energy band calculation was used to calculate the non-relativistic band structure of lead sulfide and lead selenide. Spin-orbit interaction and mass-velocity and Darwin corrections were then applied as perturbation to these results to obtain the so-called relativistic band structure of these materials. A perturbation was carried out on the conduction and valence band edges, at point L on the surface of the Brillouin Zone, to determine the nature of the constant energy surfaces and the effective masses and g-factors for the conduction and valence bands. The non-parabolic character of the band edge has been studied. The effect of the strain on the electronic properties of these materials has been studied through the calculation of their deformation potential constants. A comparison is made between the calculated results for the lead salt family with the experimental data, and various deductions are maderegarding their properties. (Author).
