Book Handbook of Language and Communication Diversity and Change

Download or read book Handbook of Language and Communication Diversity and Change written by Marlis Hellinger and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with the overall perspective of the Handbook series, the focus of Vol.9 is on language-related problems arising in the context of linguistic diversity and change, and the contributions Applied Linguistics can offer for solutions. Part I, “Language minorities and inequality,” presents situations of language contact and linguistic diversity as world-wide phenomena. The focus is on indigenous and immigrant linguistic minorities, their (lack of) access to linguistic rights through language policies and the impact on their linguistic future .Part II “Language planning and language change,” focuses on the impact of colonialism, imperialism, globalisation and economics as factors that language policies and planning measures must account for in responding to problems deriving from language contact and linguistic diversity. Part III, “Language variation and change in institutional contexts,” examines language-related problems in selected institutional areas of communication (education, the law, religion, science, the Internet) which will often derive from socioeconomic, cultural and other non-linguistic asymmetries. Part IV, “The discourse of linguistic diversity and language change,” analyses linguistic diversity, language change and language reform as issues of public debates which are informed by different ideological positions, values and attitudes (e.g. with reference to sexism, racism, and political correctness). The volume also contains extensive reference sections and index material.

Book Royal Funding of the Parisian Acad mie Royale Des Sciences During the 1690s

Download or read book Royal Funding of the Parisian Acad mie Royale Des Sciences During the 1690s written by Alice Stroup and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1987 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific revolution of the 17th century engendered diverse & prolific offspring, among which were the scientific societies. The French Academie Royale des Sciences, founded in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance, was the beneficiary of the most generous patronage of science known during the 17th century. It was an official, governmental expression of support for science rather than the independent, scholarly coterie characteristic of other contemporary scientific societies. As this study shows, the finances of the early Academy clarify the research & organization of the fledgling institution & the policies of its three ministerial protectors during the 17th century -- Colbert, Louvois, & Pontchartrain. Book Handbook of Language and Social Interaction

Download or read book Handbook of Language and Social Interaction written by Kristine L. Fitch and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook stands as the premier scholarly resource for Language and Social Interaction (LSI) subject matter and research, giving visibility and definition to this area of study and establishing a benchmark for the current state of scholarship. The Handbook identifies the five main subdisciplinary areas that make up LSI--language pragmatics, conversation analysis, language and social psychology, discourse analysis, and the ethnography of communication. One section of the volume is devoted to each area, providing a forum for a variety of authoritative voices to provide their respective views on the central concerns, research programs, and main findings of each area, and to articulate the present or emergent issues and directions. A sixth section addresses LSI in the context of broadcast media and the Internet. This volume's distinguished authors and original content contribute significantly to the advancement of LSI scholarship, circumscribing and clarifying the interrelationships among the questions, findings, and methods across LSI's subdisciplinary areas. Readers will come away richer in their understanding of the variety and depth of ways the intricacies of language and social interaction are revealed. As an essential scholarly resource, this Handbook is required reading for scholars, researchers, and graduate students in language and social interaction, and it is destined to have a broad influence on future LSI study and research.
