Book British Concepts of Heroic Gallantry and the Sixties Transition

Download or read book British Concepts of Heroic Gallantry and the Sixties Transition written by Matthew J. Lord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between concepts of heroic "gallantry," as projected by the British honours system, and the sociocultural, political, military and international transitions of the supposed Sixties "cultural revolution." In so doing, it considers how a conservative, hierarchical and state-orientated concept both evolved and endured during a period of immense change in which traditional assumptions of deference to elites were increasingly challenged. Covering the period often defined as "The Long Sixties," from 1955–79, this study concentrates on four distinct transitions undergone by both state and non-state gallantry awards, including developments within the welfare state, class and gender discrimination, counterinsurgency and decolonisation. It ultimately sheds fresh light upon the importance of postwar decades to the continued evolution of concepts of gallantry and heroism in British culture using a range of underexplored government and media archives. It will be of interest to scholars, students and general researchers of heroism in modern Britain, the Sixties revolution, postwar military history and both the social and political evolution of British honours, decorations and medals.

Download or read book Gallantry in Action written by Norman Franks and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A who’s who of the British airmen honored for their valor and courage—from the RAF’s inception to the post-WWII era—arranged alphabetically. When the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged on 1 April 1918, to form the Royal Air Force, the new command needed to have its own gallantry medals to distinguish itself from the Army and the Royal Navy. Thus the new Distinguished Flying Cross came into being. By the end of WWI, only three Second Bars had been promulgated for First War actions. Before WWII erupted, four more Second Bars had been awarded, and fifty were added to this total by the conflict’s end. Three more were awarded post-WWII, between 1952–1955, making a grand total of sixty. Still a significantly small number of members of this pretty exclusive “club.” Within the covers of this book recorded for the first time together are the mini-biographies of all those sixty along with the citations that accompanied their awards, or in some cases the recommendations for them. Also recorded are citations for other decorations such as the Distinguished Service Order, et al. As the reader will discover, the range of airmen who received the DFC and Two Bars, cover most of the ambit of WWII operations, be they fighter pilots, bomber pilots, night-fighter aircrew, aircrew navigators, engineers, etc., or reconnaissance pilots. Each has interesting stories, proving, if proof be needed, their gallantry in action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12th Light Dragoons served throughout Wellington's campaigns in the Peninsula, most notably at the Battle of Salamanca in 1812, and later at Waterloo where they suffered heavy casualties supporting the Union Brigade's famous charge. The principal source for this book are the papers of Sir James Steaurt _ Colonel of the regiment for almost all of the period in question _ supplemented by other regimental records, Horse Guards paperwork, and letters and memoirs, allowing both an official understanding of events, and several threads of human interest which develop through the narrative.??The book is divided into two halves, first providing an overview of the regiment and the role of Steuart as Colonel, before moving onto an account of the regiment on home service during the early years of the Napoleonic Wars and then on active service in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo. This concludes with a discussion of the lessons learnt during the war, as particularly exemplified by the 12th being one of the regiments selected for conversion to lancers in the aftermath of Waterloo.

Download or read book Utmost Gallantry written by Kevin D McCranie and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the oceanic war rather than on the war in the Great Lakes, this study charts the War of 1812 from the perspectives of the two opposing navies at sea, one the largest navies in the world, the other a small, upstart navy just three decades old. While American naval leadership searched for a means of contesting Britain’s naval dominance, the English sought to destroy the U.S. Navy and protect its oceanic highways. Instead of describing battles between opposing warships, Kevin McCranie evaluates entire cruises by American and British men-of-war, noting both successes and failures and how they translated into broader strategies. In the process, his study becomes a history of how the two navies fought the oceanic war, linking high-level governmental decisions about strategy to the operational use of fleets in the Atlantic and Caribbean and from the south Pacific to the Indian Ocean. This comprehensive work offers a balanced appraisal of the sea war, taking into account the strategic considerations of both sides and how the leadership from each side assessed, planned, and implemented operational concepts. It draws on a wealth of British and American archival sources to help the reader understand strategic imperatives and the correlation between these imperatives and why the oceanic war was conducted in the manner it was. All American warships cruises, not just those that resulted in battles, are covered, but the author’s action-packed accounts of battles hold special appeal.

It covers the period 1830 to 1871 and gives citations for which gold and silver medals and clasps were given by the Royal Humane Society stating in the preface:- "amongst these there are acts of heroism , which, had they been performed by a soldier or sailor in the execution of his duty, in the face of the enemy, could not have failed earning the highest distinction that is awarded; how much more then should such deeds be commended, when it is borne in mind that the individuals who risk their lives in these noble acts do so simply through the promptings of a generous heart, wishing to aid their fellow creatures in distress, without any prospect of reward or promotion?"

Book Gallantry Dizain Des Fetes Galantes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gallantry: Dizain des Fetes Galantes" is a captivating novel authored by James Branch Cabell. Set in the fictional French province of Poictesme, the book weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of romance, and chivalry and other one whimsical fantasy. The story follows the protagonist, Manuel, a simple innkeeper's son, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and ambition. Determined to ascend the social ladder and win the heart of a noblewoman, the beguiling Countess Melicent, Manuel's adventures are laden with humor, satire, and allegorical undertones. Cabell's writing style is poetic and laced with wit, drawing inspiration from the 18th-century French rococo paintings known as "fêtes galantes." He skillfully blends elements of romance and fantasy, presenting a compelling portrayal of medieval courtly life while subtly critiquing societal conventions. "Gallantry" is not merely a tale of courtly love but also a commentary on the complexities of human desires, aspirations, and the illusions of nobility. Through Manuel's quest for gallantry, Cabell masterfully explores themes of ambition, identity, and the follies of romance. This literary gem continues to enchant readers with its graceful prose, intricate narrative, and timeless reflections on the human condition, making it a remarkable and enduring work in the realm of fantasy literature.

Book Poetic Expressions of Gallantry

Download or read book Poetic Expressions of Gallantry written by Steven Moning and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gallantry inspires one to be expressive. Acknowledging ones sense of thoughts using the gifts of God: mind to think, eyes to see, ears to hear, emotions to feel, hands to touch, feet to carry, voices to motivate. Facing the mirror of oneself, surfacing the good and positive, changing the negative. Strengthen the weakness, the chaining up the badness, releasing the fear, sculpturing, polishing, oneself to be complete. Stay true to oneself. About the Author Steven Moning's grandmother's fiftieth wedding anniversary moved him to express himself in words. He wrote a poem and recited it for that occasion. From then on, events that took place in the family circle moved him to express his thoughts with words. These words began to flow gallantly, so he felt maybe there was more to these expressions. So as he wrote down thoughts, certain results moved him to put those thoughts into poems. Now they are like past, present, and everyday thoughts. He loved every expression that had its own creative, poetic and original meaning behind it. Poetry is likened to life in itself. You feel it and experience it, and it moves you to a bonding. There are lessons to be learned, warnings to be shared.
