Download or read book Gilgamesh written by Andrew Winegarner and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With all the graphic adaptations of mythology flying around, it’s about time someone got to old Gilgamesh . . . Winegarner’s adaptation demonstrates the extensive debt mythology and religion owe this ancient tale." --Booklist Before the Bible and legendary figures like Hercules, King Arthur, and Beowulf, there was Gilgamesh. As the king of Uruk, a city in ancient Mesopotamia, Gilgamesh protected his people from harm, battling a multitude of fierce demons with the steadfast help of his brother, Enkidu. But Gilgamesh's reign faced the ultimate challenge from the power-hungry goddess Ishtar, who proposed marriage only to be unceremoniously spurned by Gilgamesh. Ishtar's rage led Gilgamesh to his greatest battle, a battle that shook Gilgamesh to his core and led him to travel further than any other man—to the land of the gods on a quest to find immortality. Written down on cuneiform tablets nearly five thousand years ago, Gilgamesh's story was originally recorded in the form of an epic poem. In this bold retelling of the ancient legend—presented for the first time in graphic novel form—graphic novelist Andrew Winegarner revitalizes the ultimate adventure story. His illustrations breathe new life into the story of humanity's first hero, and the result is a page-turning take on the world's oldest epic poem.

Book The Emperor of All Maladies

Download or read book The Emperor of All Maladies written by Siddhartha Mukherjee and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

Book I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree

Download or read book I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree written by Laura Hillman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "HANNELORE, YOUR PAPA IS DEAD." In the spring of 1942 Hannelore received a letter from Mama at her school in Berlin, Germany--Papa had been arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Six weeks later he was sent home; ashes in an urn. Soon another letter arrived. "The Gestapo has notified your brothers and me that we are to be deported to the East--whatever that means." Hannelore knew: labor camps, starvation, beatings...How could Mama and her two younger brothers bear that? She made a decision: She would go home and be deported with her family. Despite the horrors she faced in eight labor and concentration camps, Hannelore met and fell in love with a Polish POW named Dick Hillman. Oskar Schindler was their one hope to survive. Schindler had a plan to take eleven hundred Jews to the safety of his new factory in Czechoslovakia. Incredibly both she and Dick were added to his list. But survival was not that simple. Weeks later Hannelore found herself, alone, outside the gates of Auschwitz, pushed toward the smoking crematoria. I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree is the remarkable true story of one young woman's nightmarish coming-of-age. But it is also a story about the surprising possibilities for hope and love in one of history's most brutal times.

Book Women s Health Research

    Book Details:
  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2010-10-27
  • ISBN : 0309163374
  • Pages : 439 pages

Download or read book Women s Health Research written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though slightly over half of the U.S. population is female, medical research historically has neglected the health needs of women. However, over the past two decades, there have been major changes in government support of women's health research-in policies, regulations, and the organization of research efforts. To assess the impact of these changes, Congress directed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ask the IOM to examine what has been learned from that research and how well it has been put into practice as well as communicated to both providers and women. Women's Health Research finds that women's health research has contributed to significant progress over the past 20 years in lessening the burden of disease and reducing deaths from some conditions, while other conditions have seen only moderate change or even little or no change. Gaps remain, both in research areas and in the application of results to benefit women in general and across multiple population groups. Given the many and significant roles women play in our society, maintaining support for women's health research and enhancing its impact are not only in the interest of women, they are in the interest of us all.

Book Handbook of Vitamin C Research

Download or read book Handbook of Vitamin C Research written by Hubert Kucharski and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6-carbon lactone known as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an important water-soluble vitamin. It is essential for preserving optimal health and it is used by the body for many purposes, including collagen biosynthesis, melanin reduction and enhanced immunity. This book addresses some important issues related to various methods which are employed to encapsulate asorbic acid. A comparation of the characteristics of ascorbic acid nano and microparticles prepared by different methods is also given. Furthermore, the biomedical significance of human vitamin C metabolism is examined, in the light of polymorphisms in xenobiotic enzymes deduced from genetic, biochemical and epidemiological results to estimate optimal nutrition. Additionally, Vitamin C exerts a protective role against some types of cancer. For that reason, this book investigates the protective effect of vitamin C. Possible pro- and antioxidant effects of vitamin C is also presented and their extrapolation on human health is discussed. Other chapters in this book include a review of the role of vitamin C in the physiology of several diseases, good dietary sources of vitamin C, a study of the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on vitamin C status in exposed populations and the role of vitamin C in human reproduction and its effect on people who suffer from epileptic seizures.
