Book Galdos s Torquemada Novels

Download or read book Galdos s Torquemada Novels written by Teresa Fuentes Peris and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benito Pérez Galdós has long been considered the Spanish Tolstoy; however, unlike those of his Russian counterpart, few of his works are available in English--and fewer still are the subjects of serious literary scholarship. This book approaches one of the author's most memorable characters, Madrid moneylender Francisco Torquemada, and considers the extent to which notions of profit, efficiency, and utility inform the Torquemada series--juxtaposing nineteenth-century understandings of waste and profit with contemporary economic ideas in order to better comprehend the writer and his world.

Book The Jew in the Novels of Benito Perez Galdos

Download or read book The Jew in the Novels of Benito Perez Galdos written by Sara E. Schyfter and published by Tamesis. This book was released on 1978 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of Galdós' Jewish characters and what they tell us about the place of Jews in C19th Spanish society and culture. Few Spanish novelists have dealt with the problem of religion and religious commitment more comprehensively than Benito Pérez Galdós. His lifelong preoccupation with man in search of transendence repeatedly led him to evaluate andcriticize the religious institutions that stifled rather than helped man in his search. In the Jews, Galdós saw a people who, though victimized by religious intolerance, managed to survive persecution and affirm an abiding faithin God. He created Jewish characters throughout his long literary career and therefore presents the most comprehensive portrait of Jews as they existed in the culture, the religion and fabric of C19th Spanish society.

Book The Cape of Don Francisco Torquemada

Download or read book The Cape of Don Francisco Torquemada written by Benito Pérez Galdós and published by Millefleurs. This book was released on 1996 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical mechanisms within the bodies of plants and animals program almost all their activities to specific phases of periodic events such as the time of day, the state of the tide, and the season of the year. Those organisms living within the intertidal zone--the area between high and low tides--face many environmental challenges that are eased tremendously by such chronobiological means. This monograph provides an authoritative, up-to-date account of research on the workings of intertidal animals' biological clocks. The book begins with a description of how tides are generated, and how the difficulties involved in studying organismic tide-associated rhythms may be overcome. The rest of the work focuses on rhythms and their properties, and the nature of the clocks that govern them. Comprehensive in scope, the book synthesizes over 350 research papers and contains over 129 figures. It is intended as a sequel to the author's well-known 1974 monograph Biological Clocks in Marine Organisms, incorporating the many advances in the field since the publication of the earlier volume. Aquatic ecologists, animal behaviorists, comparative physiologists, marine biologists, chronobiologists, and interested general readers will all want to read this important new work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Spain is a country which has always had a great attraction for English-speaking people, Spanish novelists are very little known to them. Yet Pérez Galdós is not only the most popular of writers in Spain, whose books are a household word among his countrymen, but he is a major European novelist who ranks with Balzac Dostoevsky and Dickens. In THE SPENDTHRIFTS (LA DE BRINGAS) the scene is laid in the Royal Palace at Madrid, where Bringas and his wife hold minor posts at the court of Queen Isabella. Rosalía Bringas is a woman whose passion for dress leads her steadily deeper into debt and who is obliged to resort to more and more ludicrous and precarious devices to conceal her extravagance from a model bureaucrat of a husband. Her friend the Marquesa de Tellería is in a similar plight, while Doña Cándida, a superb parasite and bore, has already reached the end of the same downward path. The rottenness of the whole regime becomes apparent and when, at the close of a sweltering summer, the Army, the Navy and the entire country rise with one accord and the Queen flees to France, the curtain falls on this phantasmagoric society, so brilliant when viewed from the outside but built on poverty and debt and emptiness. Thus THE SPENDTHRIFTS is both an allegory of the ending classes of Spain and a sermon on the classic Spanish theme, made familiar to us in DON QUIXOTE, of illusions and reality.
