Book excerpt: March 1978 saw the first ever transmission of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio 4; the beginning of a cult phenomenon. March 2020 marks the 42nd anniversary of that first transmission – 42 being the answer, of course, to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. To mark the occasion, Pan Macmillan are bringing back into print The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Original Radio Scripts with a brand-new introduction from Simon Jones. The collection also includes the previously 'lost' Hitchhiker script from the 25th anniversary edition, 'Sheila's Ear' and the original introductions by producer Geoffrey Perkins and Douglas Adams. They include amendments and additions made during recordings and original notes on the writing and producing of the series by Douglas Adams and Geoffrey Perkins. For those who have always loved Douglas Adams, as well as for his new generation of fans, these scripts are essential reading and a must-have piece of Adams memorabilia. This special anniversary edition will sit alongside reissued eye-catching editions of the five individual Hitchhiker books coming in May 2020: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish and Mostly Harmless.

Book The Lost Spaceship Gallant Soldiers Fighting For The Galaxy s Survival

Download or read book The Lost Spaceship Gallant Soldiers Fighting For The Galaxy s Survival written by RICHARD BERNARD and published by Richard Bernard. This book was released on with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 3045, humanity stood on the brink of an advanced Earth where technology thrived. The year 3045 brought an era of flying vehicles and towering skyscrapers that touched the sky, sufficient necessities that supported humanity's existence and made Earth healthier for humanity. Humanity aims to break its limits by further exploring the cosmos. Thus, the Galactic Defense Coalition (GDC) assembled the bravest and best elite space force known as “The Vanguard” to protect the Earth from potential extraterrestrial threats or invading aliens. Zuri, Orion, and Ilya formed The Vanguard (elite and gallant space soldiers sent by the GDC to explore the cosmos). Mysteriously, they discovered an unknown planet named Elysium-9. Elysium-9 is a colorful sphere pulsating with luminescent energy that sparkles like a jewel amidst the cosmos habited by friendly space habitats (aliens) known as Elysians. An invading Alien force (Zyrthians’ armies) destroyed Elysium-9 despite their technological capabilities. Zyrthians are armies of invasion space forces that suppress and conquer other planets in the galaxy. They are known as the galaxy’s oppressors, who specialize in exploiting plants’ defense vulnerabilities before mining for their resources and knowledge. They aim to become superior to other space celestial creatures in the universe. Enslaving other beings is also part of their invading agenda. Unknown to The Vanguard, a second Zyrthians’ space fleet secretly penetrated and destroyed Earth as well. Massively advanced drones from the alien’s mothership attacked and eventually destroyed Earth. Earth’s defenses, including warships and fighter jets, were no match for the space invaders. Humanity's advanced cities became ruined and deserted, like what happened in Elysium-9. Eventually, the Zyrthians (enemy aliens) made Earthlings start to live in forests like animals. The forests remain the only place with lesser alien activity. Anyone who stays in the ruined cities risks being shot by alien drones at first sight without mercy or taken hostage by Zyrthians’ aliens. Find out in many of this book series if The Vanguard could defeat the unwelcomed extraterrestrials with such superior weaponry in their quest to safeguard Earth and other planets in the galaxy from wicked space forces.

Book The Harlow Shapley Symposium on Globular Cluster Systems in Galaxies

Download or read book The Harlow Shapley Symposium on Globular Cluster Systems in Galaxies written by Jonathan E. Grindlay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the centennial year, 1985-86, of Harlow Shapley's birth, the study of globular clusters was no less important to the development of astronomy than in 1915, when Shapley first noted their concentration on the sky. By 1917 Shapley had used the properties of the system of globular clusters to complete the Copernican revolution and locate the solar system, and its Earth-bound observers, far from the center of the Galaxy and the globular cluster distribution. Seven decades later, in the year of these proceedings, globular cluster research and the study of the system of globular clusters in our own and distant galaxies is undergoing a renaissance of activity. The introduction of new observational tools, particularly CCD imagers and digital spectrographs, as well as powerful theoretical methods have transformed the study of globular clusters into one of the main line areas of modern astrophysics. Thus it seemed particularly appropriate to one of us, when considering how the Harvard College Observatory might mark the Shapley centennial, to propose and plan for an IAU Symposium on Globular Cluster Systems in Galaxies. Planning for the Shapley Symposium, as it came to be called, was even more drawn out than the preparation of this volume. The Symposium was originally proposed to the IAU Secretariat in time for it to be held in August, 1985, so that it might occur in the centennial (calendar) year.

Book Windows on Galaxies

  • ISBN : 9400905432
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Windows on Galaxies written by Giuseppina Fabbiano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with the traditional optical window, many new windows have been opened on galaxies in the last two decades, made possible by new developments in groundbased detectors and by space missions that allow detection of photons that are otherwise absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Galaxies can now be observed in the radio, submillimeter, IR, optical, UV, X- and gamma-ray bands, each window allowing us to learn more about galactic components and properties. These developments have also imposed the view that a deeper understanding of even normal galaxies requires a panchromatic approach, making use of all of the data gathered from the different windows to synthesize a comprehensive physical image of these complex astronomical systems. Windows on Galaxies presents a comprehensive view of galaxies through all the available windows, bringing together both theoretical and experimental approaches in the form of a series of reviews reporting the most recent developments complemented by contributed talks and discussions. TEXT NO. 2 The sixth workshop of the Advanced School of Astronomy examined galaxies through all available wavelength windows. Over the last twenty years, new wavelength windows have been opened in astronomy which have created many new possibilities for the observation of the properties of galaxies. The outcome of the meeting clearly stated that the approach towards the studying of galaxies should be panchromatic. Each window, from radio to gamma-rays, shows different components, and a synthesis of this knowledge presents astronomers with a comprehensive physical image of these astronomical systems: star formation, evolution of galaxies, molecular contents, gas flows, interstellar matter and properties of galaxies in the several wavelength fields are discussed in this volume.

Book A Galaxy Here and Now

Download or read book A Galaxy Here and Now written by Peter W. Lee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Star Wars begins with its famous title sequence, setting the story in the ancient past of a remote galaxy. Yet the phenomenal success of the film, the franchise, and its "expanded universe" is based upon its reflection of historical and cultural milieus here on modern-day Earth. This collection of new essays examine various ways in which George Lucas's saga touches upon contemporary social and political issues. Topics include the impact of the film's score on musical genres, feminism and NASA, the epic mimicry of Western-African and Bedouin cultural motifs, gender identity construction, Cold War narratives in radio and national mythology, and fan interpretations of authorship and authenticity.
