Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 14, 1912, Hillsville, Virginia, native Floyd Allen (1856–1913) was convicted of three criminal charges: assault, maiming, and the rescue of prisoners in custody. What had begun as a scuffle between Allen's nephews over a young woman ended with him being charged as the guilty party after he allegedly hit a deputy in the head with a pistol. When the jury returned with the verdict, Allen stood up and announced, "Gentleman, I ain't a-goin." A gunfight ensued in the crowded courtroom that killed five people and wounded seven others. The state of Virginia put Floyd and Claude Allen to death by electrocution the following spring. More than a century later, the event continues to impact the citizens and communities of the area as local newspapers recirculate the sordid story and give credence to annual public reenactments that continue to negatively impact the national perception of the region. In this first book-length scholarly review of the Hillsville shoot-out, author Travis A. Rountree examines various media written about and inspired by the event and explains how the incident reinforced the nation's conception of Appalachia through depictions of this sensational moment in history. In all, this book provides an extensive analysis of this historic conflict and reveals a new understanding of the shaping of memories and stories from the event.

Book They Walked These Streets

Download or read book They Walked These Streets written by Judith Nunn Alley and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judith Lucinda Nunn Alley, a Galax historian and a former resident, has written a follow up to her book "First Families of Galax" that was published several years ago. The new book is a salute to members of the "Greatest Generation" with Galax roots and contains over 200 sketches of leading citizens during the 1940-1960 time period of Galax history. The sketches provide family history, school activities, military experiences, and civic activities of the subjects as well as who were their childhood friends, wedding descriptions, and obituaries when possible. As a genealogist, she has used vital records, newspaper accounts, genealogy records and information shared by family members of some of those featured in the book as part of her research. Judy may be remembered also as being co-author of the Arcadia book on Galax and Galax Remembered with her brother, the late John J. Nunn. When asked what inspired her to write this book, Judy replied that she had grown up in the best of times, in the best of towns and wanted people to know about the leaders of Galax during her childhood. Also involved is her deep love of history, especially WWII; not the battles, but the people who lived during those years.-- from publisher's description.

Book The Stonemans

Download or read book The Stonemans written by Ivan M. Tribe and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stonemans is an eye-opening slice of Americana---a trip through nearly twenty years of country music history following a single family from their native Blue Ridge Mountains to the slums of Washington, D.C., and the glitter of Nashville. As early as 1924 Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman realized the potential of what is now known as country music, and he tried to carve a career from it. Successful as a recording artist from 1925 through 1929, Stoneman foundered during the Great Depression. He, his wife, and their nine children went to Washington in 1932, struggling through a decade of hardship and working to revive the musical career Pop still believed in. The Stoneman Family won the Country Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year Award in 1967. After Pop's death a year later, some of the children scattered to pursue their own careers. Ivan Tribe relies on extensive interviews with the Stonemans and their friends in this chronicle of a family whose members have clung to their musical heritage through good times and bad.

Book excerpt: This is a biography of Dan Levenson, an old-time banjo and fiddle player from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Between 1987 and 1991, Dan worked for Goose Acres Folk Music Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where he dove deeply into old-time music. In the late 1980s, he formed the Boiled Buzzards; they recorded four albums between 1989 and 1994 and were a consistently active presence at old-time music festivals. He also played with Bob Frank during that time as one-half of the Hotfoot Duo. In 1995, he teamed up with Kim Murley and recorded New Frontier: Instrumentals from China and America. Levenson undertook his first cross-country trip as a solo performer in 1996. His traveling workshop "Meet the Banjo" ran with the sponsorship of Deering Banjos from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Dan recorded three projects in the first five years of the 2000s and began editing the quarterly "Old Time Way" section for Banjo Newsletter in 2005. He continues performing old-time music, teaching fiddle and banjo, writing instructional and repertoire books featuring banjo and fiddle tunes for Mel Bay, and making plans for more old-time music projects.
