Book excerpt: A collection of eight short stories and novellas in the dark and turbulent world of Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space universe.Centuries from now, solidarity stretches thin as humanity spreads past the solar system and to the nearest stars. Technology has produced powerful new tools-but lethal risk will always accompany great advancement. And without foresight, opposing groups may fracture multiple worlds. Between the Demarchists and the Conjoiners, the basic right to expand human intelligence-beyond its natural limits-has become a war-worthy cause. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

Book An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei

Download or read book An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei written by Bradley M. Peterson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we test if a supermassive black hole lies at the heart of every active galactic nucleus? What are LINERS, BL Lacs, N galaxies, broad-line radio galaxies and radio-quiet quasars and how do they compare? This timely textbook answers these questions in a clear, comprehensive and self-contained introduction to active galactic nuclei - for graduate students in astronomy and physics. The study of AGN is one of the most dynamic areas of contemporary astronomy, involving one fifth of all research astronomers. This textbook provides a systematic review of the observed properties of AGN across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, examines the underlying physics, and shows how the brightest AGN, quasars, can be used to probe the farthest reaches of the Universe. This book serves as both an entry point to the research literature and as a valuable reference for researchers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachings from the Sirian High Council to help humanity as we merge into the 4th dimension • Shares empowering insights and revelations from six-dimensional Sirian Light Emissaries to help us understand the darkness and focus on light for all humanity and the earth • Explains what we are undergoing right now around the globe, including the rush to merge the human mind with artificial intelligence, ET disclosure, and the dark forces that are losing their grip on our planet and humanity • Offers Sirian guidance for surviving our imminent collective ascension and awakening en masse to new levels of conscious awareness In 1996, while visiting the Julia Set crop circle in England, Patricia Cori experienced a galactic out-of-body journey—a transformational awakening that attuned her to a group of interdimensional light beings known to her as the Sirian High Council. Serving as their scribe now for more than 25 years, she shares the insights and teachings of these six-dimensional Sirian Light Emissaries to help humanity as we merge into the fourth dimension and face our collective karma—the source of so much of the dramatic events now unfolding around the world. Sharing new revelations that affirm the veracity of past prophecies as well as transmitting new visions for the human race, Cori’s messages from higher realms empower readers to peer fearlessly into the darkness, to understand it, and to focus on the light for all humankind and the earth. She explains how the Sirians hold us to our responsibility as guardians of this planet, with sound direction and advice for how to survive our imminent collective ascension and global awakening to new levels of conscious awareness. The Sirians’ discussions explain what we are undergoing right now and delve into many of the most crucial issues of our time, including the rush to merge the human mind with artificial intelligence, ET disclosure, cloning, the slipping of time, and the dark forces that are losing their grip on our planet and humanity. As the struggle between darkness and light is being fought at every level, Cori reminds us to take comfort in the fact that the Sirian High Council foresaw and told us how this time of immense upheaval would be the last phase of our passage out of the darkness and into illuminated states of consciousness and the light of planetary renewal.

Book Active Galactic Nuclei

  • Author : Francoise Combes
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2022-08-23
  • ISBN : 1394163711

Download or read book Active Galactic Nuclei written by Francoise Combes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All galaxies host a super-massive black hole in their center. These black holes grow their mass in symbiosis with their host galaxy and moderate their star formation. When matter is driven towards the nucleus, an accretion disk is formed to transfer angular momentum and considerable energy is released when the material falls into the black hole: this is the phenomenon of active galactic nuclei (AGN). A nucleus can shine one thousand times more brightly than the entire galaxy with its 200 billion stars. The nuclear activity can take many forms, from very powerful quasars to more ordinary Seyfert galaxies, passing by radio-galaxies, which eject a collimated plasma at ten times the radius of the galaxy. This book examines all of these manifestations and presents a unified view. When two galaxies merge, a binary black hole is formed and the two black holes will spiral inwards and merge, emitting long gravitational waves, which could be detected by the future LISA satellite.

Book Galactic Suburbia

Download or read book Galactic Suburbia written by Lisa Yaszek and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking cultural history, Lisa Yaszek recovers a lost tradition of women's science fiction that flourished after 1945. This new kind of science fiction was set in a place called galactic suburbia, a literary frontier that was home to nearly 300 women writers. These authors explored how women's lives, loves, and work were being transformed by new sciences and technologies, thus establishing women's place in the American future imaginary.Yaszek shows how the authors of galactic suburbia rewrote midcentury culture's assumptions about women's domestic, political, and scientific lives. Her case studies of luminaries such as Judith Merril, Carol Emshwiller, and Anne McCaffrey and lesser-known authors such as Alice Eleanor Jones, Mildred Clingerman, and Doris Pitkin Buck demonstrate how galactic suburbia is the world's first literary tradition to explore the changing relations of gender, science, and society.Galactic Suburbia challenges conventional literary histories that posit men as the progenitors of modern science fiction and women as followers who turned to the genre only after the advent of the women's liberation movement. AsYaszek demonstrates, stories written by women about women in galactic suburbia anticipated the development of both feminist science fiction and domestic science fiction written by men.

Book Belladonna Nights and Other Stories

Download or read book Belladonna Nights and Other Stories written by Reynolds, Alastair and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alastair Reynolds has continued to publish short fiction throughout the thirty-odd years of his professional career. This fourth collection gathers material mostly written by the former space scientist in the last decade, even as a number of stories--such as the title piece, set in the universe of House of Suns--revisit earlier environments. The scope of settings is wide, ranging from the contemporaneous Earth to the near future and out to the furthest realms of the galaxy, and taking in such diverse topics as the perils of immortality, cybernetic encounters in the Wild West, uncanny skateboard parks and the flocking behaviour of birds. There is horror here, but also hope--and not a little black humour. The collection includes "Open and Shut," "Night Passage," and "Plague Music," a long, previously unpublished story, all three set in the Revelation Space universe.
