Book Galactic and Extragalactic Infrared Spectroscopy

Download or read book Galactic and Extragalactic Infrared Spectroscopy written by M.F. Kessler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last major conference on infrared astronomy was the IAU Symposium No. 96 in June 1980. Since then, the discipline has continued to mature and to contribute to all branches of astrophysics. One particular area of growth has been in spectroscopic capabilities at all infrared wavelengths. The purpose of the Symposium in Toledo was to review the scientific questions to be addressed via infrared spectroscopy and to provide, in the proceedings, a useful summary of the field. The sensitivity of infrared spectroscopic observations is still generally limited by detector characteristics or by thermal background radiation. However in recent years improvements in detector technology together with developments in spectroscopic instrumentation have made possible both quite detailed spectroscopy of the brighter members of many classes of galactic sources and also begun to open up some infrared spectroscopy of extragalactic sources. The potential of the field in the next decade or two is clear. The lRAS mission has completed one of the pre-requisites, namely an all-sky photometric survey. Major space missions utilising cryogenic infrared telescopes have been approved in Europe (ISO) and seem likely in the USA (SIRTF); plans for space submillimeter telescopes are firming up. On the ground large telescopes optimized for infrared observations are now in operation at high altitude sites and specialized submillimeter facilities are under construction. The particular advantages of planned, very large telescopes for infrared observations are widely accepted.

Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Star Formation in Galactic and Extragalactic Regions

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy of Star Formation in Galactic and Extragalactic Regions written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last year we submitted and had accepted a paper entitled "The Far-Infrared Emission Line and Continuum Spectrum of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1068," by Spinoglio, L., Malkan, M., Smith. HA, Gonzalez-Alfonso, E., and Fischer, J. This analysis was based on the SWAS Monte Carlo code modeling of the OH lines in galaxies observed by ISO. Since that meeting last spring considerable effort has been put into improving the Monte Carlo code. A group of European astronomers, including Prof. Eduardo Gonzalez-Alfonso, had been performing Monte Carlo modeling of other molecules seen in ISO galaxies. We used portions of this grant to bring Prof. Gonzalez-Alfonso to Cambridge for an intensive working visit. A second major paper on the ISO IR spectroscopy of galaxies, "The Far Infrared Spectrum of Arp 220," Gonzalez-Alfonso, E., Smith. H., Fischer, J., and Cernicharo, J., is in press. Spitzer science development was the major component of this past year;s research. This program supported the development of five Early Release Objects for Spitzer observations on which Dr. Smith was Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, and another five proposals for GO time. The early release program is designed to rapidly present to the public and the scientific community some exciting results from Spitzer in the first months of its operation. The Spitzer instrument and science teams submitted proposals for ERO objects, and a competitive selection process narrowed these down to a small group with exciting science and realistic observational parameters. This grant supported Dr. Smith's participation in the ERO process, including developing science goals, identifying key objects for observation, and developing the detailed AOR (observing formulae) to be use by the instruments for mapping, integrating, etc.). During this year Dr. Smith worked on writing up and publishing these early results. The attached bibliography includes six of Dr. Smith's articles. During this past year Dr. Sm

This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details work done in a project involving spectroscopic studies, including data analysis and modeling, of star-formation regions using an ensemble of archival space-based data including some from the Infrared Space Observatory's Long Wavelength Spectrometer and Short Wavelength Spectrometer, and other spectroscopic databases. We will include four kinds of regions: (1) disks around more evolved objects; (2) young, low or high mass pre-main sequence stars in star-formation regions; (3) star formation in external, bright IR (infrared) galaxies; and (4) the galactic center. During this period, work proceeded fully on track and on time. Details on workshops and conferences attended and research results are presented. A preprint article entitled 'The Far Infrared Lines of OH as Molecular Cloud Diagnostics' is included as an appendix. Book The Galactic Interstellar Medium

Download or read book The Galactic Interstellar Medium written by W.B. Burton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous Saas-Fee Advanced Course dedicated to the interstellar medium took place in 1972. The tremendous scientific advances that have occurred in this field since then, in particular owing to the availabihty of receivers working at completely unexplored wavelength bands, fuUy justified a new set of lectures. As a consequence, the members of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and As tronomy voted that "The Galactic Interstellar Medium" should be the subject of the 1991 course. The 21st Saas Fee Advanced Course took place in Les Diablerets from 18 to 23 March 1991, gathering together about 80 participants from all over the world, but mostly from Europe. According to a rule that has proved to lead to success, but also to chal lenge the lecturers' energy, the format of a Saas-Fee Advanced Course consists traditionally of 28 lectures of 45 minutes which take place in the morning and late afternoon, leaving ample time for discussions, self-study, hiking or skiing. Despite the inordinate work load imposed, this year's lecturers felt that the subject was sufficiently dense to increase the lecture time by 1/3! This proved judicious and left more time for questions and discussions during the lectures.

Book The Impact of Near Infrared Sky Surveys on Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy

Download or read book The Impact of Near Infrared Sky Surveys on Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy written by N. Epchtein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the pioneering enterprise of Neugebauer and collabo rators, the astronomical sky is surveyed anew in the near infrared range with a gain in sensitivity greater than 4 orders of magnitude. Data have started to come through the "pipelines" routinely and at the turn of the century, the astronomical community will be provided with immense databases that will eventually contain accurate positions and 3- colour (or even 4-colour after merging DENIS and 2MASS data) photometry for hundreds million of stars and millions of galaxies. This fantastic harvest of data will eventually result of the huge effort that has been deployed on both sides of the Antlantic to promote 2 major projects, 2MASS and DENIS. rd The basic aim of this 3 Euroconference (and last in the series), was to put in close contact the scientific teams of 2MASS and DENIS in order to present and discuss the first significant results of the two surveys and to start promoting possible future plans
