Book excerpt: Gaia Connections addresses several arenas of concern as humankind faces an escalating ecological and moral crisis in this new millennium. Beginning with an overview of the history of philosophy and the importance of traditional thinking on modern-day ethical reflection, the book then looks at the development of theories of justice, the problems of equity in global human relations, the inability of existing economic systems to resolve our human and environmental dilemmas, the unnatural connections now obtaining between genuine human need and the technological drift of science, the new genetics and reproductive technologies, and the nature of modern war. The study concludes with some historical perspectives on American environmental history and the urgent need for change in our ecoethical, social, and value systems. The principal focal areas of the original edition are continued: the actual state of the global environment today, the imperative for the development of sustainable economic and resource systems, the movement within much of science toward an almost universal biological determinism, and the need for a reaffirmation of an ethical value system which places the needs of people before the needs of property and profits. The revised edition not only updates these data and the concerns of the original book but also visits a number of new issues: the movement for environmental justice, the connections between global poverty and the now almost universal allegiance to a new world market and free trade system, the progress and the dilemmas of molecular biology and genetic engineering, and the growing disarray within the global systems of political economy.

Book To Be As God

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. J. Rushdoony
  • Publisher : Chalcedon Foundation
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 1879998386
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book To Be As God written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2003 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work is a series of essays on the influential thinkers and ideas in modern times. The author begins with De Sade, who self-consciously broke with any Christian basis for morality and law. Enlightenment thinking began with nature as the only reality, and Christianity was reduced to one option among many. It was then, in turn, attacked as anti-democratic and anti-freedom for its dogmatic assertion of the supernatural. Literary figures such as Shelly, Byron, Whitman, and more are also examined, for the Enlightenment presented both the intellectual and the artist as replacement for the theologian and his church. Ideas, such as "the spirit of the age," truth, reason, Romanticism, persona, and Gnosticism are related to the desire to negate God and Christian ethics. Reading this book will help you understand the need to avoid the syncretistic blending of humanistic philosophy with the Christian faith.

Book Cosmic Connections

Download or read book Cosmic Connections written by Murry Hope and published by Thoth Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gaia Dialogues, Murry Hope employed the 'field theory' accessing technique - a method akin to the Eastern system of Samyama (fusion) - to initiate a series of dialogues with the genius of the planet Earth, to whom Professor James Lovelock ascribed the name 'Gaia'. Much of the information given in The Gaia Dialogues being drawn from well-proven scientific data, Murry Hope now applies the same modus aperandi, to affect similar connections with the other planets in our solar system, the planetoid Chiron, the Sun and the Universe herself with startling results. This book is for those interested in the broadest possible spectrum of the Cosmos and its relationship to life on Earth, the content presupposing a broad knowledge of para-physics, psychology, mythology and esoteric knowledge. For the advanced metaphysical student and the beginner alike it will prove a mine of information about the myriad connections throughout our universe.

Book Music and the Skillful Listener

Download or read book Music and the Skillful Listener written by Denise Von Glahn and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Denise Von Glahn, listening is that special quality afforded women who have been fettered for generations by the maxim "be seen and not heard." In Music and the Skillful Listener, Von Glahn explores the relationship between listening and musical composition focusing on nine American women composers inspired by the sounds of the natural world: Amy Beach, Marion Bauer, Louise Talma, Pauline Oliveros, Joan Tower, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Victoria Bond, Libby Larsen, and Emily Doolittle. Von Glahn situates "nature composing" among the larger tradition of nature writing and argues that, like their literary sisters, works of these women express deeply held spiritual and aesthetic beliefs about nature. Drawing on a wealth of archival and original source material, Von Glahn skillfully employs literary and gender studies, ecocriticism and ecomusicology, and the larger world of contemporary musicological thought to tell the stories of nine women composers who seek to understand nature through music.

Book Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure

Download or read book Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure written by Paulo Pinho and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite extensive efforts to understand the overall effect of urban structure on the current patterns of urban mobility, we are still far from a consensual perspective on this complex matter. To help build agreement on the factors influencing travel behaviour, this book discusses the influence of alternative urban structures on sustainable mobility. Bringing together two existing and complementary methods to study the relationship between urban structure and mobility, the authors compare two case studies with distinct urban structures and travel behaviour (Copenhagen and Oporto). Of particular concern is the influence of urban structure factors, namely land use and transport system factors, and motivational factors related to the social, economic and cultural characteristics of the individual traveller. The research presented in this book highlights the relevance of centrality in travel behaviour and in more sustainable travel choices. Different operational forms of the centrality concept are revealed as important: it is shown that more sustainable travel can be influenced by several urban structure factors and that no particular combination is required as long as a certain level of centrality is provided. Finally, the book concludes that urban structure can, on the one hand, constrain and, on the other hand, influence travel choice.
