La profusion de cette vaste entreprise a pu surprendre ; elle demeure un pilier de son œuvre et du romantisme naissant. Dans un premier mouvement, qui constitue le présent volume, Chateaubriand aborde l’origine des créations de l’homme, de la nature et de ses mystères. La religion chrétienne étant «la plus poétique, la plus humaine, la plus favorable à la liberté, aux arts et aux lettres», il s’ensuit que toute la littérature, tous les beaux-arts, toute la pensée philosophique et savante ne sont pas autre chose, nous dit-il, que l’émanation de Dieu.
