Book Hispanic Baroque Ekphrasis

Download or read book Hispanic Baroque Ekphrasis written by Luis Castellví Laukamp and published by Legenda. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses of early modern Latin American literature have often portrayed it either as a continuation of the Iberian tradition, or as a reaction against Spanish imperialism. However, such overgeneralisations cannot account for the complex corpus of writing produced in the 'New World'. This is particularly true for the study of Gongorism, the new style developed by the Spanish author Luis de Góngora (1561-1627), which transformed Baroque poetics on both sides of the Atlantic. In this monograph, Luis Castellví Laukamp examines Góngora's impact on the visual and artistic imagination of two major Spanish American authors: Hernando Domínguez Camargo (1606-1659) and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695). Its implications extend beyond the Hispanic world to inform broader discussions about poetic influence, transmission of culture, and the relationship between art and poetry. Luis Castellví Laukamp completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge and is now a Lecturer in Spanish Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester.

Book excerpt: Tamerlane and Other Poems is the first published work by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The short collection of poems was first published in 1827. Today, it is believed only 12 of approximately 50 copies of the collection still exist. The poems were largely inspired by Lord Byron, including the long title poem "Tamerlane", which depicts a historical conqueror who laments the loss of his first romance. Like much of Poe's future work, the poems in Tamerlane and Other Poems include themes of love, death, and pride.

Book Imagining Culture

Download or read book Imagining Culture written by Jonathan Hart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of original essays explores three important areas in comparative literature and history and in cultural studies: the boundaries between history and fiction;women as writers and subjects; and the connection between the early modern, modern and postmodern. New history and new literary studies look at innovative ways to see past cultures in a new light. Traditional methods are used to new ends and writers who are familiar within their cultures are translated to other cultures. This study promotes an expanded understanding of our cultural artifacts in a rapidly changing present. It discusses English-speaking culture in the early modern period in the context of other European cultures and relates Europe to other parts of the world, most notably America. After grounding the discussion of culture in history, identity, dialogue as a genre that crosses the boundaries between philosophy and fiction, the rhetoric of prefaces to historical collections, cosmographies and histories that share something with the techniques of literary and forensic rhetoric, the book proceeds to discuss two central issues in cultural studies today: gender and postmodernity. The final section of the book provides a general assessment through early modern texts of modernity and postmodernity.
