Book excerpt: Father Brown is a fictional detective created by G. K. Chesterton. To be exact, he is called Father J. Brown, though we are never told what the initial stands for, and is originally presented as the parish priest of Cobhole in Essex, though he is found in parishes as far afield as Italy and South America. In appearance he is undistinguished, small and dumpy, short-sighted and not particularly intelligent; dressed in shabby clerical black, and carrying an umbrella as dumpy and shabby as himself. The Father Brown mysteries generally appeared first as independent short stories in various magazines; (most of) the stories were eventually collected in a series of five books:The Innocence of Father Brown (1911)The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914)The Incredulity of Father Brown (1926)The Secret of Father Brown (1927), andThe Scandal of Father Brown (1935).Three stories, "The Donnington Affair" (1914) (GKC writing the solution of a mystery set up by Max Pemberton), "The Vampire of the Village" (1936), and "The Mask of Midas" (1936), were published separately, though the second of these was later included in editions of Scandal.

Chesterton Father Brown is a fictional character, an amateur sleuth created in the early 1900s by English novelist G. K. Chesterton. Chesterton based the character on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.Father Brown is a short, stumpy Roman Catholic priest, "formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London", with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. He makes his first appearance in the story "The Blue Cross" and continues through the five volumes of short stories, often assisted by the reformed criminal M. Hercule Flambeau. Father Brown also appears in a story "The Donnington Affair" that has a curious history. In the October 1914 issue of the obscure magazine The Premier, Sir Max Pemberton published the first part of the story, inviting a number of detective story writers, including Chesterton, to use their talents to solve the mystery of the murder described. Chesterton and Father Brown's solution followed in the November issue. The story was first reprinted in the Chesterton Review (Winter), 1981, pp. 1-35 and in the book Thirteen Detectives.

Chesterton, who appears in 50 short stories. Father Brown's powers of detection allow him to sit beside the immortal Sherlock Holmes but he is also, to quote Rufus King, 'in all senses a most pleasantly fascinating human being'. You will be enchanted by the scandalously innocent man of the cloth, with the umbrella, who exhibits such uncanny insight into ingeniously tricky human problems. Chesterton "And the young woman of the house," asked Dr. Hood, with huge and silent amusement, "what does she want?" "Why, she wants to marry him," cried Father Brown, sitting up eagerly. "That is just the awful complication." "It is indeed a hideous enigma," said Dr. Hood. "This young James Todhunter," continued the cleric, "is a very decent man so far as I know; but then nobody knows very much. He is a bright, brownish little fellow, agile like a monkey, clean-shaven like an actor, and obliging like a born courtier. He seems to have quite a pocketful of money, but nobody knows what his trade is. Mrs. MacNab, therefore (being of a pessimistic turn), is quite sure it is something dreadful, and probably connected with dynamite. Book excerpt: The doctor regarded the new-comer with a restrained astonishment, not unlike that he would have shown if some huge but obviously harmless sea-beast had crawled into his room. The new-comer regarded the doctor with that beaming but breathless geniality which characterizes a corpulent charwoman who has just managed to stuff herself into an omnibus. It is a rich confusion of social self-congratulation and bodily disarray. His hat tumbled to the carpet, his heavy umbrella slipped between his knees with a thud; he reached after the one and ducked after the other, but with an unimpaired smile on his round face spoke simultaneously as follows: "My name is Brown. Pray excuse me. I've come about that business of the MacNabs. I have heard, you often help people out of such troubles. Pray excuse me if I am wrong."

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Technical University of Braunschweig, language: English, abstract: Gilbert Keith Chesterton started writing when he was a schoolboy and today his work is well-known all over the world. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. But he also wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 books, hundreds of poems, five plays, five novels and more than two hundred short stories, including a popular series on “Father Brown” which I think is one of his greatest works. These stories on “Father Brown” have been written between 1911 and 1935 and are summarized in five books called “The Innocence of Father Brown”, “The Wisdom of Father Brown”, “The Incredulity of Father Brown”, “The Secret of Father Brown” and “The Scandal of Father Brown”. All the books “constitute a fascinating summary of Chesterton practising what he preached” 1 . In my work I will concentrate on the second Father Brown book called “The Wisdom of Father Brown”. It was published in 1914 and contains twelve stories on the priestdetective Father Brown. First I will give short summaries of the four stories I chose from the book and afterwards I will focus on the main character Father Brown, his attitudes and his development. To do this I will mainly give attention to the four stories I selected but also prove some of my statements by referring to one of the other stories. I will also compare Chesterton’s views with the attitudes of his figure Father Brown.

Book excerpt: G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown may seem a pleasantly doddering Roman Catholic priest, but appearances deceive. With keen observation and an unerring sense of man’s frailties–gained during his years listening to confessions–Father Brown succeeds in bringing even the most elusive criminals to justice. This definitive collection of fifteen stories, selected by the American Chesterton Society, includes such classics as “The Blue Cross,” “The Secret Garden,” and “The Paradise of Thieves.” As P. D. James writes in her Introduction, “We read the Father Brown stories for a variety pleasures, including their ingenuity, their wit and intelligence, and for the brilliance of the writing. But they provide more. Chesterton was concerned with the greatest of all problems, the vagaries of the human heart.”

Book excerpt: Father Brown, a full-time Catholic priest, and part-time amateur detective returns in this third collection of short stories by G. K. Chesterton. This time Father Brown is investigating alone; his sidekick, the former criminal Flambeau, is nowhere to be seen. Father Brown has to solve a murder (including his own!) in each story, and since several also appear to involve the supernatural, he has ample opportunity to elaborate on his thoughts concerning it.

Book excerpt: The Wisdom of Father Brown is the second book in the series of cases involving the eccentric yet competent detective. Invented by renowned author, essayist and journalist G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown is an amateur sleuth whose day job involves preaching to his congregation at church. Chesterton himself was a committed Christian who wrote volumes of essays and fiction surrounding faith and spirituality, and would base his Father Brown stories upon a priest - Father John O'Connor - he himself knew. Despite its intention as a parody, the Father Brown books became a popular hit in early 20th century Britain as well as the USA. Today they remain a well-considered and much-liked classic series which fans of detective fiction return to more than a century after their original publication. Characterised by his easily digestible style, ready use and exposure of paradox, and his use of wit and humour to advance argument, Chesterton's fiction and non-fiction writings on the topics of human behaviour and wider society remain relevant and poignant to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This premium quality edition contains the complete and unabridged original classic version of The Wisdom of Father Brown, including twelve stories featuring G.K Chesterton's mystery-solving priest, printed on heavyweight 60#, bright white paper in a large 6"x9" format, with page headers and a fully laminated full-color cover featuring an original design. Mystery fans unfamiliar with Father Brown may find Chesterton's stories a bit different. Many of the stories don't quite fit either the standard ("Whodunit?") or inverted ("Howcatchem?") styles common to the mystery genre, and Father Brown is frequently less concerned with the apprehension of the wrongdoer than with getting him to understand, and admit, the error of his ways. With his powers of observation and attention to details, and a knowledge of crime and criminals derived in no small part from his years as a priest hearing confessions, Father Brown frequently finds the solution through a strictly rational reasoning process more concerned with psychological, spiritual and philosophic truths than with scientific investigation. This particular volume contains twelve of Chesterton's original Father Brown adventures, published as individual short stories and first collected and published in book form under the title The Wisdom of Father Brown in 1914. G.K. Chesterton... Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936) was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary critic, and biographer, best known today for his Father Brown mystery stories and such social commentary as "Heretics," "Orthodoxy," and "The Everlasting Man."

I had always felt life first as a story: and if there is a story, there is a Storyteller." --G. K. Chesterton During Chesterton's lifetime, a host of perspectives clamored for his attention, but he saw nothing as vital and alive as Christianity. A Year with G. K. Chesterton, a daily devotional dedicated to the life and legacy of G. K. Chesterton, brings this truth into a brand new light. A true anthology, A Year with G. K. Chesterton compiles the best of Chesterton's many works and presents them in concise, memorable selections. From New Year's Day to New Year's Eve, each daily entry will guide you through: A timeless verse from Scripture A thoughtful passage from G. K. Chesterton’s incredible body of work A moment for reflection and appreciation Praise for A Year with G. K. Chesterton: "Chesterton once a day? Well, that's a start. It is good to see that someone is finally recognizing the need for a daily minimum requirement of mirth and meditation from GKC." --Dale Ahlquist, President, American Chesterton Society "Who could not be grateful for a year spent with GKC? The great subverter of everything taken for granted, he stretches and deepens us with his insights, shakes us with his startling paradoxes and delights us with his wit. Thank God there is no getting to the end of Chesterton." --Os Guinness, author of A Free People's Suicide
