Over 50 of Chesterton's poems, plus the poem and play "The Wild Knight." Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936) better known as G.K. Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories-first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected."[6] Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Cardinal Newman, and John Ruskin.

Book The Collected Works of G K Chesterton

Download or read book The Collected Works of G K Chesterton written by Gilbert Keith Chesterton and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Gilbert Chesterton always had a propensity for throwing his genius around. As a result of this tendency, Chesterton penned articles, essays, stories, and poems for so many periodicals that it was almost impossible to keep track of them. In this volume, Dr. Denis J. Conlon, Professor of English Literature at the University of Antwerp, has compiled Chesterton's short stories--some of which have never appeared in print. Many stories will be new to Chesterton fans because they were originally published in England and never appeared in U.S. editions, and others published in the U.S. remain unknown on the other side of the Atlantic. Dr. Conlon also includes the lost Father Brown stories, "Fr. Brown and the Donnington Affair" and "The Mask of Midas". There are 43 short stories here, along with a selection of 25 complete and incomplete tales from Chesterton's notebooks, and numerous drawings and illustrations. Some of the stories in this wonderful volume are: "The Coloured Lands," "The Sword of Wood," "The Trees of Pride," "How I Found the Superman," "The Five of Swords," "Homesick at Home," and "The End of Wisdom." With illustrations.

The poem describes how the Virgin Mary helped Alfred beat the Dane invaders in the Battle of Ethandun. There are 2,684 lines of English verse throughout the entire poem. They are broken up into stanzas, which normally include 4 to 6 lines each. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of thirty-seven essays by G. K. Chesterton was first collected in 1929 and constitutes the cream of introductions and prefaces he had contributed by that date. Some of them, such as his startling essay on Job, are well known, but most of them have not seen the light of day since this volume drifted into obscurity. Some of these pieces are about people as well known as Matthew Arnold or Dr. Johnson, and the bulk of these are on literary figures; but others may veer on to such topics as Magna Carta or drinking songs. When Chesterton began writing for the Illustrated London News, his editors asked him not to write on religion or politics; he casually mentioned that there are no other subjects and quietly went about his business. These essays are like that. Each is fraught with one or the other topic--fraught because they are in danger of making us think.

Book The Ballad of the White Horse 1911 by Gilbert K Chesterton Poetry

Download or read book The Ballad of the White Horse 1911 by Gilbert K Chesterton Poetry written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of the White Horse is one of the last great epic poems in the English language. On the one hand it describes King Alfred's battle against the Danes in 878. On the other hand it is a timeless allegory about the ongoing battle between Christianity and the forces of nihilistic heathenism. Filled with colorful characters, thrilling battles and mystical visions, it is as lively as it is profound. Chesterton incorporates brilliant imagination, atmosphere, moral concern, chronological continuity, wisdom and fancy. He makes his stanzas reverberate with sound, and hurries his readers into the heart of the battle. This deluxe volume is the definitive edition of the poem. It exactly reproduces the 1928 edition with Robert Austin's beautiful woodcuts, and includes a thorough introduction and wonderful endnotes by Sister Bernadette Sheridan, from her 60 years researching the poem. "When Chesterton writes poetry, he excels like no other modern writer. The rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and imagery are a complete joy to the ear. But The Ballad of the White Horse is not just a poem. It is a prophecy." -Dale Ahlquist, President, The American Chesterton Society The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealised exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work has been described as one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language.[1] The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. Chesterton begins his work with a note (in prose) declaring that the poem is not historical. He says that he has chosen to place the site of the Battle of Ethandune in the Vale of the White Horse, despite the lack of concrete evidence for this placement (many scholars now believe it was probably fought at Edington, Wiltshire). He says that he has chosen to include legends about Alfred, even if they are historically unlikely.
