Book English

Download or read book English written by Anna Wierzbicka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that English is the first truly global language and lingua franca. Anna Wierzbicka, the distinguished linguist known for her theories of semantics, has written the first book that connects the English language with what she terms "Anglo" culture. Wierzbicka points out that language and culture are not just interconnected, but inseparable. She uses original research to investigate the "universe of meaning" within the English language (both grammar and vocabulary) and places it in historical and geographical perspective. This engrossing and fascinating work of scholarship should appeal not only to linguists and others concerned with language and culture, but the large group of scholars studying English and English as a second language.

A shattered man, Dale returns to his home in Western Australia. Then Emily wagers her share of the station, and herself, on a horse race and becomes unable to ride. Will Dale learn, before it's too late, that some promises are meant to be broken? In The Flyer, Paul Campbell has fought the Turks, the Germans, and the occasional rogue crocodile, and as a confirmed bachelor, veteran of the Great War, and jack-of-all-trades in the rough country of Western Australia, he is free to live the rest of his life in peace. He has only one goal: to make life easier on the residents of the Outback by flying medicine, supplies, and the rare letter to those who live in Australia's sprawling interior. That is, until a new doctor lands on his doorstep begging for a gentle hand and a warm kiss—even if she doesn't know it yet. Helen Stanwood left the relative comfort of her San Francisco home with a mission: to forget the pain of her former existence by devoting herself to helping those in need. But when she arrives in Australia she is faced with the realization that she can't run away from

Book Bad Debts

  • Author : Peter Temple
  • Publisher : Text Publishing
  • Release : 2012-07-02
  • ISBN : 1921961562
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Bad Debts written by Peter Temple and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melbourne in winter. Rain. Wind. Pubs. Beer. Sex. Corruption. Murder. A phone message from ex-client Danny McKillop doesn’t ring any bells for Jack Irish. Life is hard enough without having to dredge up old problems: his beloved football team continues to lose, the odds on his latest plunge at the track seem far too long and he’s still cooking for one. But then Danny turns up dead and Jack has to take a walk back into the dark and dangerous past. Peter Temple is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest writers, and his novels have been published in twenty countries. During his lifetime he worked extensively as a journalist and editor, before teaching editing and media studies at a number of universities. His novels, among them the Jack Irish series, Truth, The Broken Shore and An Iron Rose, are celebrated as some of the best crime writing in English. Temple died in March 2018. ‘Bad Debts is wonderful, quintessentially Australian stuff, full of authentic, diehard types, old culture cops, backstreet humour and inner-city dialogue you can overhear in the bars of certain hotels, the ones with framed pictures of horses on the walls. It is the genuine article and an absolute pearler of a read.’ Australian Book Review ‘Like his characters, Temple has a spare, funny delivery, and a sharp eye for a target...Temple writes with the urgency of someone who wants to disrupt an official investigation, and his story is kept up like taut wire. Brothers and sisters in crime, worship at the Temple.’ Australian ‘The prose is tight, the pace breathless, the dialogue inspired, and Temple’s take on the Victorians’ football mania hilarious.’ Sun-Herald ‘Temple can be as tough as nails, but also displays a wickedly droll sense of humour which, like the work of, say, the American writer Joe R. Lansdale, frequently has the reader holding his sides with laughter even while immersed in some particularly unpleasant scenario...With Bad Debts Temple has created a world-class novel.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘Unlike many good crime stories, this one can be related to our immediate environment. It incorporates icons and mediums which are very much part of most Australians’ lives...These are the elements which make Bad Debts such a good crime novel. From the unforgettable cast of characters to the events which pre-destine their lives, the story literally explodes off the pages.’ Geelong Advertiser 'One of the world’s finest crime writers.’ The Times ‘Having read the new novels of Michael Connelly and Martin Cruz Smith, I have to say that Temple belongs in their company. Australia is a long way off, but this bloke is world-class.’ Washington Post ‘Fortunately, Text Publishing last year began the welcome and long-overdue project of ensuring that Temple’s entire backlist, which includes four Jack Irish novels and five stand-alones, is available on these shores...Irish is tough and resourceful, yes, but it’s the way Temple brings out his fear, desire, humor, and self-doubt that ranks him among the most interesting series heroes.’ Booklist US

Book excerpt: ‘We have a dead second wife and a missing first wife…we’ve got a huge problem here.’ Detective Peter Seymour Seven Bones is the story of one of the more bizarre murder investigations in Australia’s history. Two wives die in suspicious circumstances: co-incidence or, as husband Thomas Keir describes it, ‘bad luck’? Three years after Thomas Keir alleged his first wife Jean deserted him and her young son for another man, his second wife Rosalina, Jean’s cousin, lay scorched and strangled on her bed. Arriving on the scene, Detective Peter Seymour realised he was either dealing with the world’s unluckiest husband, or a serial wife killer. While Keir was remarkably found ‘not guilty’ of Rosalina’s murder, despite a clear-cut case, her death unlocked the mystery of Jean’s disappearance. A subsequent police investigation lead to the discovery of seven small fragments of Jean’s bones - fingers, knuckles and toes - buried deep under the same house in which Rosalina died. Keir’s ‘grieving husband’ act was suddenly in question. The investigation revealed Thomas Kier was a man so jealous he hated even his own baby son touching his wife, Jean. A man so possessive he threatened he would cut her up and feed her to the dogs if she ever left him. A man who thought he could commit the perfect crime and publicly taunted the police through the media. Written through the eyes of Detective Peter Seymour, Seven Bones follows his relentless pursuit of justice and his own family sacrifices, through the drama of the police investigation into Jean’s death, and the three trials, convictions, and appeals that would take fifteen years to reach their final conclusion.

However, after arriving he finds that it is little more than a simple security detail, attached to a platoon of Fusiliers of the PanOceanian Light Infantry, guarding a sleepy MagnaObra research facility not far from the border of Yujingyu territory known as Alpha Four Four. The platoon Hawkins works alongside is led by Lieutenant Priya Shankar, a driven, serious minded officer whose professionalism makes her popular with her seniors, but seemingly cold and unapproachable to the soldiers under her command. Book Lasseters Legacy

Download or read book Lasseters Legacy written by Steven Elliott and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lasseter legend is well known in Australia, or at least it was when I was a younger man. The story goes that a man named Harrold Lasseter whilst journeying across the desert from Alice Springs to the west coast around 1900 reportedly discovered a fabulously rich reef of gold. Nothing was done about the discovery until many years later in the 1930’s when Lasseter mounted an expedition to relocate the fabulous reef, an expedition that resulted in his death and no reef. Since that time many people have ventured into the desert in search of the reef with no success. This book details a geologists quest for the reef and his own fabulous gold find which become embroiled in criminal conspiracy and action. Of course the hero geologist triumphs and a World class series of gold mines is established. It should however be noted that the author believes that Lasseters gold reef never existed.
