Book Intracellular Messengers

Download or read book Intracellular Messengers written by C.M. Taylor and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new reference work offers an outstanding collection of articles devoted to the discussion of "intracellular messengers". Extracellular stimuli ("first messengers") bind to receptors on the plasma membrane of cells to trigger changes in the concentration of intracellular messengers ("second messengers") which leads, in turn, to changes in cellular activity. However, the intracellular activities of so called "third messengers" may also be involved complicating the concept of a rigid sequence of events between receptor and response. The preference for the term "intracellular messengers", and, hence, the title of this volume, recognizes that a complex web of interactions between intercellular messengers determines the concentrations and ultimate effects of each.

Book excerpt: Far from the battlefront, hundreds of thousands of workers toiled in Bohemian factories over the course of World War I, and their lives were inescapably shaped by the conflict. In particular, they faced new and dramatic forms of material hardship that strained social ties and placed in sharp relief the most mundane aspects of daily life, such as when, what, and with whom to eat. This study reconstructs the experience of the Bohemian working class during the Great War through explorations of four basic spheres—food, labor, gender, and protest—that comprise a fascinating case study in early twentieth-century social history.

Book Ion Pumps Part A

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.P. Andersen
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1997-11-19
  • ISBN : 0080877079
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Ion Pumps Part A written by J.P. Andersen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-11-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells depend strongly on the function of ion pumps present in their membranes. The term ion pump, synonymous with active ion-transport system, refers to a membrane-associated protein that translocates ions uphill against an electrochemical potential gradient. Primary ion pumps utilize energy derived from chemical reactions or from the absorption of light, while secondary ion pumps derive the energy for uphill movement of one ionic species from the downhill movement of another species. In the present volume, various aspects of ion pump structure, mechanism, and regulation are treated using mostly the ion-transporting ATPases as examples. One chapter has been devoted to a secondary ion pump, the Na+-Ca2+ exchanger, not only because of the vital role played by this transport system in regulation of cardiac contractility, but also because it exemplifies the interesting mechanistic and structural similarities between primary and secondary pumps.

  • Author : James W. Putney, Jr.
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1999-12-27
  • ISBN : 9780849333866
  • Pages : 422 pages

Download or read book Calcium Signaling written by James W. Putney, Jr. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-12-27 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably no other field of biological research embraces such a diverse array of experimental approaches as does the field of calcium signaling. Not only does it span virtually all conceptual and technical areas of molecular and cell biology, but a number of unique techniques, such as the use of permeabilized cells to study intracellular calcium metabolism, have evolved directly from calcium research. Calcium Signaling explores this fascinating area of research, covering the biophysical, molecular biological, and cell biological techniques involved in the study of calcium signaling. This work examines a broad range of topics-from techniques for imaging and measuring calcium in subcellular compartments, to subcellular fractionation and intracellular calcium stores, and patch clamp investigation of calcium channels. Filled with detailed illustrations, Calcium Signaling addresses those key methodological approaches that are useful to scientists and researchers investigating calcium function and regulation in many diverse areas of biological and medical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this volume results become generally available of a recent conference that was the first to discuss properties of isolated heart muscle cells from the adult myocardium as a new cardio logical research tool. The conference was held as an International Erwin Riesch Symposium un der the auspices of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fUr Herz- und Kreislaufforschung at Spangenberg Castle, March 22-25, 1984. It was made possible through funding by the Erwin Riesch Foun dation and the Bayer AG which deserve our gratitude for their generosity. It may not be fully reflected in this collection of papers that the atmosphere of this meeting was unique. The reason for this resided apparently in the still rudimentary experiences with the adult cardiocyte model that is now widely acknowledged to be very promising. Thus, quite basic inter ests brought together experts from different biological disciplines who in respect to this new mod el were all still "beginners". It was noteworthy that such common interests exerted a unifying effect upon otherwise rather separated fields of science. The main task of the years to come will certainly consist in improving isolation and culturing conditions for adult myocytes in order to fully establish the isolated cell model in heart research
