Book excerpt: Young people consider their future at a stage of life when the structure and relative certainty of school and further education are about to be left behind. This book provides an insight into how young people see themselves, the options they think are available to them and the strategies they use to make their imagined futures possible. Ultimately, Imagining Futures is about identity. It draws on the real-life stories and voices of a range of young people—many of whom are in their final years of secondary school or TAFE—to present an eye-opening portrait who they are, who they aim to become and how.

Book Resources Society and the Future

Download or read book Resources Society and the Future written by Tomas Bertelman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resources, Society and the Future is a report on resources and raw materials and their implications for the future of the Swedish society. This report aims to create a framework for a continuous dialogue in Sweden between the general public and their political representatives, the scientific world and interest groups of all kinds. Two debates in Sweden are considered, one of them centering on national interests, that is, Sweden's needs for industrial production and exports, and the other concerning long-term questions of human survival (environment, resource base, and questions of equity between industrialized and developing countries). This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins by outlining the motives for a futures study of resources and raw materials, followed by an explanation of what resources and raw materials mean, along with a general description of the volume of raw materials produced and consumed worldwide. Subsequent chapters focus on the global demand and supply of resources; energy and raw materials in Sweden; and aims and means of a raw materials policy. Instruments of a raw materials policy and measures to reduce the use of scarce raw materials and to increase the supply of raw materials are discussed, along with the relationship between the environment and the supply of raw materials. This monograph will be a valuable resource for policymakers concerned with energy and natural resources and their impact on society.

In this compelling book Birtchnell and Urry examine such a new possible future involving the mass adoption of 3D printing. The locating of 3D printers in homes, offices, stores and workshops would disrupt existing systems and pose novel challenges for incumbents. It offers the first book-length social scientific analysis of the character and impacts of a new system of manufacturing that is in formation. The book will be of interest to urban planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, economists, as well as general readers by offering inquiry on this future upheaval in the means of production.
