Book Towards a Commercial Future

Download or read book Towards a Commercial Future written by Michelle Heath and published by Calgary : University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the alternative transportation fuels more frequently discussed today are ethanol and methanol. This study reviews, on the basis of available information, recent developments in the Canadian gasoline market and examines the likely developments in sourcing, pricing and competition of these alcohol fuels, in relation to each other and to gasoline in the regional markets. The study also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of 6 oxygenates which have been considered as fuel additives for octane enhancement in Canada as well as their use to date; and the implications of using ethanol and methanol as alternative fuel sources for the stakeholders involved and suggests the necessary pre-steps which will be required in order to maintain harmony between all the players affected by this industry.

Book Liquid Transportation Fuels from Coal and Biomass

Download or read book Liquid Transportation Fuels from Coal and Biomass written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transportation sector cannot continue on its current path: The volatility of oil prices threatens the U.S. economy, the large proportion of oil importation threatens U.S. energy security, and the massive contribution of greenhouse gases threatens the environment. The development of domestic sources of alternative transportation fuels with lower greenhouse emissions is now a national imperative. Coal and biomass are in abundant supply in the United States and can be converted to liquid fuels that can be combusted in existing and future vehicles. Their abundant supply makes them attractive candidates to provide non-oil-based liquid fuels to the U.S. transportation system. However, there are important questions about the economic viability, carbon impact, and technology status of these options. Liquid Transportation Fuels from Coal and Biomass provides a snapshot of the potential costs of liquid fuels from biomass by biochemical conversion and from biomass and coal by thermochemical conversion. Policy makers, investors, leaders in industry, the transportation sector, and others with a concern for the environment, economy, and energy security will look to this book as a roadmap to independence from foreign oil. With immediate action and sustained effort, alternative liquid fuels can be available in the 2020 time frame, if or when the nation needs them.

Book Engines and Fuels for Future Transport

Download or read book Engines and Fuels for Future Transport written by Gautam Kalghatgi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on clean transport and mobility essential to the modern world. It discusses internal combustion engines (ICEs) and alternatives like battery electric vehicles (BEVs) which are growing fast. Alternatives to ICEs start from a very low base and face formidable environmental, material availability, and economic challenges to unlimited and rapid growth. Hence ICEs will continue to be the main power source for transport for decades to come and have to be continuously improved to improve transport sustainability. The book highlights the need to assess proposed changes in the existing transport system on a life cycle basis. The volume includes chapters discussing the challenges faced by ICEs as well as chapters on novel fuels and fuel/ engine interactions which help in this quest to improve the efficiency of ICE and reduce exhaust pollutants. This book will be of interest to those in academia and industry alike.

Download or read book Alcohol Fuels written by Yongseung Yun and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol fuels must remain as an essential component for the realization of a sustainable low-carbon society. Use of locally available, under-utilized feedstock becomes important for local energy security as well as an option for distributed energy infrastructure. Utilizing the available feedstock that has not been properly regarded as a legitimate resource due to economic and social reasons should be the focal point in the search for possible resources for alcohol fuels. Lignocellulosic biomass and algal species are feedstocks that suit the purpose. This book can provide a brief introduction regarding the recent advances in the alcohol fuel field that is in constant challenge from recent issues on CO2, shale oil, power-to-gas, and hydrogen.

Download or read book Fuels to Drive Our Future written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American love affair with the automobile is powered by gasoline and diesel fuel, both produced from petroleum. But experts are turning more of their attention to alternative sources of liquid transportation fuels, as concerns mount about U.S. dependence on foreign oil, falling domestic oil production, and the environment. This book explores the potential for producing liquid transportation fuels by enhanced oil recovery from existing reservoirs, and processing resources such as coal, oil shale, tar sands, natural gas, and other promising approaches. Fuels to Drive Our Future draws together relevant geological, technical, economic, and environmental factors and recommends specific directions for U.S. research and development efforts on alternative fuel sources. Of special interest is the book's benchmark cost analysis comparing several major alternative fuel production processes. This volume will be of special interest to executives and engineers in the automotive and fuel industries, policymakers, environmental and alternative fuel specialists, energy economists, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the vitality and economic growth of the U.S. being linked to affordable transportation, the use of alternative fuels is beginning to play a larger role. The use "alternative fuel" has been used to describe any fuel suggested for use in transportation vehicles other than gasoline or diesel. Since 1998, more than half of the petroleum the U.S. economy requires has been supplied by imports. In addition, the climatological and scientific community has warned that increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will cause global change. Alternative Fuels examines the accepted alternative fuels, providing historical background, physical and chemical properties, production technology, and forecasts for each fuel. Alternative transportation fuels addressed include: methanol, ethanol, propane, natural gas, biodiesel, hydrogen, and electricity. Chapters include: The Argument for Alternative Fuels Methanol Ethanol Propane Natural Gas Electricity and more

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2010-06-26
  • ISBN : 0309146402

Download or read book Hidden Costs of Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-06-26 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many benefits of energy, most of which are reflected in energy market prices, the production, distribution, and use of energy causes negative effects. Many of these negative effects are not reflected in energy market prices. When market failures like this occur, there may be a case for government interventions in the form of regulations, taxes, fees, tradable permits, or other instruments that will motivate recognition of these external or hidden costs. The Hidden Costs of Energy defines and evaluates key external costs and benefits that are associated with the production, distribution, and use of energy, but are not reflected in market prices. The damage estimates presented are substantial and reflect damages from air pollution associated with electricity generation, motor vehicle transportation, and heat generation. The book also considers other effects not quantified in dollar amounts, such as damages from climate change, effects of some air pollutants such as mercury, and risks to national security. While not a comprehensive guide to policy, this analysis indicates that major initiatives to further reduce other emissions, improve energy efficiency, or shift to a cleaner electricity generating mix could substantially reduce the damages of external effects. A first step in minimizing the adverse consequences of new energy technologies is to better understand these external effects and damages. The Hidden Costs of Energy will therefore be a vital informational tool for government policy makers, scientists, and economists in even the earliest stages of research and development on energy technologies.
