Book European Audiovisual Policy in Transition

Download or read book European Audiovisual Policy in Transition written by Heritiana Ranaivoson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and critically addresses the innovations and shifts made in the revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) adopted by the European Parliament and Council in 2018. Reflecting on European Union regulation and policy practice in all its Member States, the book’s unique approach places in-depth case study topics against the broader theoretical background. Taking a Europe-wide angle, an international team of authors focuses on key aspects of the AVMSD: the expansion of its scope to include video-sharing-platforms such as YouTube; the update of the rules for commercial communications; the first attempt for harmonized, minimal requirements at EU level regarding transparency of media ownership; new rules to ensure that video-on-demand services offer, invest in, and prioritise European content; the obligation on television distributors and smart TV manufacturers to pass on broadcasters’ signal without any interference, alteration or modification; and, the formalisation and consolidation of new forms of collaboration among national regulatory authorities. This thorough analysis of the cornerstone of European media policy makes this edited collection a crucial reference for scholars and students of media and cultural industries, media law and policy, European and EU media policy, and technology studies.

Book Cross border Dissemination of Online Content

Download or read book Cross border Dissemination of Online Content written by Mark D. Cole and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the rules of the European Union's E-Commerce Directive, which date back to the year 2000, continue to be valid with regard to the dissemination of content in view of the constantly evolving online environment and the changing role of platforms as a result of new business models? The relevant legal foundations in this respect at EU and national level are complex, and their interplay is often unclear. The resulting uncertainty about who is responsible and therefore liable for certain content requires a critical review of the current legal framework. This study, conducted by the Institute of European Media Law (EMR) on behalf of the State Media Authority NRW, analyses the current legal framework and reveals ways of enforcing the applicable provisions concerning illegal content. It pays special attention to the need for reform of the E-Commerce Directive in light of the changing role of platforms.

Book Digital Peripheries

Download or read book Digital Peripheries written by Petr Szczepanik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. Media industry research and EU policymaking are predominantly tailored to large (and, in the latter case, Western) European markets. This open access book addresses the specific qualities of smaller media markets, highlighting their vulnerability to global digital competition and outlining survival strategies for them. New online distribution models and new trends in the consumption of audiovisual content are limited by, and pose new challenges for, existing audiovisual business models and their legal framework in the EU. The European Commission’s Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy, which was intended e.g. to remove obstacles to the cross-border distribution of audiovisual content, has triggered a heated debate on the transformation of the existing ecosystem for European screen industries. While most current discussions focus on the United States, Western Europe, and the multinational giants, this book approaches these industry trends and policy questions from the perspective of relatively small and peripheral (in terms of their population, language, cross-border cultural flows, and financial and/or symbolic capital) media markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the media law field, we are all confronted more and more frequently with the term horizontal regulation. What exactly is meant though by horizontal regulation? Does it already exist in the audiovisual field, particularly in EC law, and, if so, how does it work? What are its limitations? This edition provides some answers to these questions. In five articles, it describes "horizontal" rules in five different subject areas and compares and analyzes them.--Publisher's description.

Book Television without frontiers

Download or read book Television without frontiers written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-02-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The draft Audiovisual Media Services (AMS) Directive, published in December 2005, was met with some alarm. It sought to extend the existing 'Television without Frontiers' Directive to new services which were seen to be competing for audience and revenue. In doing so it would have introduced inappropriate regulation on the new media sector. There have now been some changes to the original draft and a tightening of the definition of "television like" services. Although an improvement, the Committee is concerned that there is still not enough legal certainty. They are also worried about the need to defend the 'Country of Origin' approach to single market legislation and reject the idea that regulators should act to preserve the market dominance of existing players from new entrants. They are also unconvinced of the need for any quantitative restriction on advertising.

Book Digital and Social Media Regulation

Download or read book Digital and Social Media Regulation written by Sorin Adam Matei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital and social media companies such as Apple, Google, and Facebook grip the globe with market, civic, and political strength akin to large, sovereign states. Yet, these corporations are private entities. How should states and communities protect the individual rights of their citizens – or their national and local interests – while keeping pace with globalized digital companies? This scholarly compendium examines regulatory solutions which encourage content diversity and protect fundamental rights. The volume compares European and US regulatory approaches, including closer focus on topics such as privacy, copyright, and freedom of expression. Further, we propose pedagogical models for educating students on possible regulatory regimes of the future. Our final chapter invites readers to consider social and digital media regulation for both this generation and the ones to come. Chapter(s) “Introduction: New Paradigms of Media Regulation in a Transatlantic Perspective”, “From News Diversity to News Quality: New Media Regulation Theoretical Issues” and “The Stakes and Threats of the Convergence Between Media and Telecommunication Industries” are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Book Media Revolution in Europe

Download or read book Media Revolution in Europe written by Karol Jakubowicz and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "rags to riches" story of Karol Jakubowicz's involvement in the work of the Council of Europe took him from the role of an awestruck newcomer from Poland in 1990 to that of the Chairman of the Steering Committee on the Media and New Communication Services (2005-06). Along the way, he was elected, delegated by the Steering Committee, and invited by the Council of Europe Secretariat to serve in a number of other capacities. In all of them, he contributed a wide variety of papers, reports and studies to assist the steering committee and other bodies in collecting information and formulating ideas in the general field of freedom of expression, creation of free and democratic media systems (including the issue of public service media), regulation of transfrontier television, the adjustment of Council of Europe human rights standards to the conditions of the information society, and the development of broadcasting legislation in Council of Europe member states. The present collection of these papers and reports is published in the conviction that they retain their value and relevance. It provides the additional benefit of offering a glimpse of the work preceding the formulation of Committee of Ministers recommendations and declarations, as well as resolutions of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
