Book European Research and Innovation in Materials Science and Engineering

Download or read book European Research and Innovation in Materials Science and Engineering written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third Materials Summit brought together representatives of main industrial and research stakeholders in materials science and engineering. This time we also had the honour of hosting representatives from Member States as observers, upon request of the Programme Committee in the "NMP configuration" as established for the EU 7th Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration activities (FP7). Whereas the first Summit had a constitutive character and the second one defined ideas and proposals for the optimal features for supporting materials research and innovation at Community level, the third Summit discussed more in detail the possible use of diverse instruments and tried to extract possible "champions", i.e. topics that could represent examples of areas of research and innovation which would give the best value of working at the EU level in the immediate future. To set the scene, the Summit opened with introductory presentations on the portfolio of materials research and innovation topics in FP7, lessons learned from a specific call for projects on the way from research to innovation, perspectives for materials research in Horizon 2020 as proposed by the European Commission, a presentation of the FET (Future Emerging Technologies) scheme as proposed for Horizon 2020, and the NanoFutures roadmap, as reported in the agenda. It was acknowledged that the minutes from the previous Materials Summits were uploaded on the Materials Blog and opened for input. Many inputs were received from associations, companies and researchers. A main recommendation for the future has been to concentrate on areas of research and innovation where materials are the key factor for success, where the market is growing or a high-value or strategic niche, and where "things will happen in Europe."

Book excerpt: One major goal of the World Materials Research Institute Forum - WMRIF is to promote young scientists in the field of materials science and engineering. To enhance the international knowledge exchange between young postdoctoral scientists all over the world, WMRIF meanwhile regularly organizes joint workshops among the member institutes. These workshops also represent an increasingly appreciated platform to get known to each other and to build co-operations. For such workshops, various topics are selected, pointing to future perspectives and challenges in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. This time, the presentations of the workshop focused on the four subjects Challenges in conclusive, realistic and system oriented materials testing Materials challenges for water supply Materials challenges in the extraction and recovery of scarce elements and minerals Materials challenges for nuclear fission and fusion. This book comprises the peer-reviewed contributions during the 2nd International Workshop for Young Materials Scientists at BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin, Germany. It also provides a very informative overview of recent results for all materials scientists.

Book Fluid Sciences and Materials Science in Space

Download or read book Fluid Sciences and Materials Science in Space written by H.U. Walter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peaceful use of space flight systems for research and technological devel opments in the context of promoting European and international cooperation represents the essential motivation for the programmes of the European Space Agency (ESA). One of ESA's programmes is dedicated to microgravity research, which is now an established discipline in Europe, with a dedicated group of scientists participating. The Challenger disaster has resulted in a serious dis continuity of flight opportunities in the next few years but the forthcoming International Space Station, new launchers and reentry vehicles are expected to provide ample opportunities for microgravity research in the long term. Meanwhile parabolic aircraft flights, sounding rockets as well as the delayed Shuttle-dependent missions, Spacelab D-2, the IML-missions and EURECA I, will be employed to keep microgravity experimenters reasonably busy in the interim period. To prepare the ground for these activities, both regarding research and experiment facilities, an in-depth analysis of the state of the art is an essential requirement at this time. Such an analysis is presented in this volume. It ad dresses all of the topics that have been identified to be of relevance. Besides a presentation of the fundamental aspects justifying microgravity research, the results of experiments already performed are reviewed and recommendations for future activities are made. Close to fifty European scientists have cooper ated in the preparation of this volume and their dedicated and concerted effort is greatly appreciated.

Book European Futures

Download or read book European Futures written by Chad Damro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the opportunities and challenges facing the European Union in the future from different disciplines and assesses the EU’s prospects across various policy areas. Using the European Commission’s 2017 White Paper presenting five different scenarios for the future of Europe to 2050 as an organising framework for analysis and debate, the volume reflects upon the drivers of the EU’s future, including its changing place in an evolving world, a transformed economy and society, heightened threats and concerns about security and borders, and questions of trust and legitimacy. The concluding chapter summarises and compares the findings to determine which of the scenarios is the most instructive to understand and plan European Futures to 2050, and beyond. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European integration, EU politics/studies, and more broadly international relations, as well as European policy-makers.

Book Between Science And Industry Institutions In The History Of Materials Research

Download or read book Between Science And Industry Institutions In The History Of Materials Research written by Robert P Crease and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science institutions have always been crucial to the development of materials research. Even before materials science emerged as a discipline in the 20th century, these institutions existed in various forms. They provided specialized facilities for research, educated new generations of researchers, drafted policies and funded programs, enabled valuable connections between research groups, or played any other role which were needed to further the progress of materials science. This volume, the third in a series of volumes covering the development and history of materials science, presents illuminating perspectives on material science institutions. Twenty chapters are organized into six comprehensive parts of which each cover a characteristic aspect or historical feature. True to the topic they write about, the contributors to this volume have varied backgrounds. Some are materials scientists and engineers, but others are historians, philosophers of science, sociologists, or even directors of institutions themselves. This comprehensive, unified collection is a valuable resource for undergraduates, graduate students, academics, policymakers and professionals who are actively interested in materials science and its development from the past to the future.
