Book Large scale Mines and Local level Politics

Download or read book Large scale Mines and Local level Politics written by Colin Filer and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the difference in their populations and political status, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea have comparable levels of economic dependence on the extraction and export of mineral resources. For this reason, the costs and benefits of large-scale mining projects for indigenous communities has been a major political issue in both jurisdictions, and one that has come to be negotiated through multiple channels at different levels of political organisation. The ‘resource boom’ that took place in the early years of the current century has only served to intensify the political contests and conflicts that surround the distribution of social, economic and environmental costs and benefits between community members and other ‘stakeholders’ in the large-scale mining industry. However, the mutual isolation of Anglophone and Francophone scholars has formed a barrier to systematic comparison of the relationship between large-scale mines and local-level politics in Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia, despite their geographical proximity. This collection of essays represents an effort to overcome this barrier, but is also intended as a major contribution to the growth of academic and political debate about the social impact of the large-scale mining industry in Melanesia and beyond.

Book The future of Mining Industry in Guinea

This book provides information on the potential and the evolution of the Guinean mining sector.

Book Regime Stability Social Insecurity and Bauxite Mining in Guinea

Download or read book Regime Stability Social Insecurity and Bauxite Mining in Guinea written by Penda Diallo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how bauxite mining has affected local and national political dynamics in Guinea over the past 55 years, providing an overview of mining interactions with social, economic and political spheres. Guinea is amongst the world’s top producers of bauxite, and the country’s rich mineral presence has numerous implications on local communities and national policy. Guinea is an interesting and highly relevant case study in assessing the impact of bauxite mining on regime stability and social insecurity. The author offers a clear understanding of the role of mining during the Touré and Conté regimes and analyses how changes since the election of Condé in 2010 have affected the socio-political and economic development of Guinea. The author also offers analysis on how bauxite mining has led to the emergence of new forms of social contracts, sustained by mining companies instead of the state. Finally, the book argues that understanding the stabilising and destabilising potential of mining is key to ensuring long-term, sustainable, stable and inclusive growth of mineral-resource-rich countries. The book concludes by highlighting the relevance of the findings in Guinea for the wider African extractives sector. The book will be of interest to a wide range of scholars, including those working in the areas of African studies, political science, political economy, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The book will be relevant for academics, business actors, NGOs, policy-makers and students interested in the African mining sector.

Guinea has an area of approximately 245,860 square kilometers and a population of about 12.4 million people. It is rich in mineral resources such as bauxite, gold, and diamonds, making it a major exporter of these resources to other countries. Despite its abundance of natural resources, Guinea is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Almost half of the population lives below the poverty line, with inadequate access to basic infrastructures such as water, sanitation, and electricity. The country has also suffered from political instability, with several coups and military dictatorships in its recent history. However, Guinea has made some progress in recent years towards improving its economic and political situation, with the introduction of democratic reforms and more stable governance.

Download or read book Mining Capitalism written by Stuart Kirsch and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-06-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations are among the most powerful institutions of our time, but they are also responsible for a wide range of harmful social and environmental impacts. Consequently, political movements and nongovernmental organizations increasingly contest the risks that corporations pose to people and nature. Mining Capitalism examines the strategies through which corporations manage their relationships with these critics and adversaries. By focusing on the conflict over the Ok Tedi copper and gold mine in Papua New Guinea, Stuart Kirsch tells the story of a slow-moving environmental disaster and the international network of indigenous peoples, advocacy groups, and lawyers that sought to protect local rivers and rain forests. Along the way, he analyzes how corporations promote their interests by manipulating science and invoking the discourses of sustainability and social responsibility. Based on two decades of anthropological research, this book is comparative in scope, showing readers how similar dynamics operate in other industries around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Sustainable Minerals Operations in the Developing World

Download or read book Sustainable Minerals Operations in the Developing World written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2005 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable development of minerals, which are non-renewable resources, is a major challenge in today's world. In this regard the true definition of 'sustainability' is a debating point in itself: can such a concept exist with respect to non-renewable resources? Perhaps the ideal sustainability model is one that minimizes negative environmental impact and maximizes benefits to society, the economy and regional/national development. Developed and near-developed economies rely for commodity supplies on developing countries where major mining operations are often a mainstay of the domestic economy. Limited environmental regulation and low wages lead to charges of exploitation. Also, large numbers of people have no alternative to living by informal, often dangerous, 'artisanal' mining. This Special Publication gives examples from developing countries from all scales of mineral extraction. The volume reviews environmental, economic, health and social problems and highlights the need to solve these before sustainability can be achieved. The better solutions require mutual understanding, through full involvement of all stakeholders, education, training and investment so that small-scale and artisanal mines can grow into well-managed operations. At larger scales, most major international mining companies have now improved their practices and are monitoring their progress, although there is no room for complacency in this rapidly changing area.

Low commodity prices in 2014-20, a severe drought in 2015-16, and a major earthquake in 2018 softened growth, led to shortages of FX, and contributed to a pre-pandemic build-up of public debt. The pandemic further increased public debt, which is now at high risk of distress, while development needs remain considerable.
