Book Futureface

Download or read book Futureface written by Alex Wagner and published by One World. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the host of MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight, “a rich and revealing memoir” (The New York Times) about her travels around the globe to solve the mystery of her ancestry, confronting the question at the heart of the American experience of immigration, race, and identity: Who are my people? “A thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are . . . and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.”—Barack Obama The daughter of a Burmese mother and a white American father, Alex Wagner grew up thinking of herself as a “futureface”—an avatar of a mixed-race future when all races would merge into a brown singularity. But when one family mystery leads to another, Wagner’s post-racial ideals fray as she becomes obsessed with the specifics of her own family’s racial and ethnic history. Drawn into the wild world of ancestry, she embarks upon a quest around the world—and into her own DNA—to answer the ultimate questions of who she really is and where she belongs. The journey takes her from Burma to Luxembourg, from ruined colonial capitals with records written on banana leaves to Mormon databases, genetic labs, and the rest of the twenty-first-century genealogy complex. But soon she begins to grapple with a deeper question: Does it matter? Is our enduring obsession with blood and land, race and identity, worth all the trouble it’s caused us? Wagner weaves together fascinating history, genetic science, and sociology but is really after deeper stuff than her own ancestry: in a time of conflict over who we are as a country, she tries to find the story where we all belong. Praise for Futureface “Smart, searching . . . Meditating on our ancestors, as Wagner’s own story shows, can suggest better ways of being ourselves.”—Maud Newton, The New York Times Book Review “Sincere and instructive . . . This timely reflection on American identity, with a bonus exposé of DNA ancestry testing, deserves a wide audience.”—Library Journal “The narrative is part Mary Roach–style participation-heavy research, part family history, and part exploration of existential loneliness. . . . The journey is worth taking.”—Kirkus Reviews “[A] ruminative exploration of ethnicity and identity . . . Wagner’s odyssey is an effective riposte to anti-immigrant politics.”—Publishers Weekly

Book The Future of the Office

Download or read book The Future of the Office written by Peter Cappelli and published by Wharton School Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A GLOBE & MAIL BEST BUSINESS BOOK OF 2021 The COVID-19 pandemic forced an unprecedented experiment that reshaped white-collar work and turned remote work into a kind of "new normal." Now comes the hard part. Many employees want to continue that normal and keep working remotely, and most at least want the ability to work occasionally from home. But for employers, the benefits of employees working from home or hybrid approaches are not so obvious. What should both groups do? In a prescient new book, The Future of the Office: Work from Home, Remote Work, and the Hard Choices We All Face, Wharton professor Peter Cappelli lays out the facts in an effort to provide both employees and employers with a vision of their futures. Cappelli unveils the surprising tradeoffs both may have to accept to get what they want. Cappelli illustrates the challenges we face by in drawing lessons from the pandemic and deciding what to do moving forward. Do we allow some workers to be permanently remote? Do we let others choose when to work from home? Do we get rid of their offices? What else has to change, depending on the approach we choose? His research reveals there is no consensus among business leaders. Even the most high-profile and forward-thinking companies are taking divergent approaches: --Facebook, Twitter, and other tech companies say many employees can work remotely on a permanent basis. --Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and others say it is important for everyone to come back to the office. --Ford is redoing its office space so that most employees can work from home at least part of the time, and --GM is planning to let local managers work out arrangements on an ad-hoc basis. As Cappelli examines, earlier research on other types of remote work, including telecommuting offers some guidance as to what to expect when some people will be in the office and others work at home, and also what happened when employers tried to take back offices. Neither worked as expected. In a call to action for both employers and employees, Cappelli explores how we should think about the choices going forward as well as who wins and who loses. As he implores, we have to choose soon.

Download or read book Good Italy Bad Italy written by Bill Emmott and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago Italy was Europe's highly touted emerging economy, a society that blended dynamism and super-fast growth with a lifestyle that was the envy of all. Now it is viewed as a major threat to the future of the Euro, indeed to the European Union as a whole. Italy's political system is shorn of credibility as it struggles to deal with huge public debts and anemic levels of economic growth. Young people are emigrating in droves, frustrated at the lack of opportunity, while older people stubbornly cling to their rights and privileges, fearful of an uncertain future. In this lively, up-to-the-minute book, Bill Emmott explains how Italy sank to this low point, how Italians feel about it, and what can be done to return the country to more prosperous and more democratic times. With the aid of numerous personal interviews, Emmott analyzes "Bad Italy"—the land of disgraced Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, an inadequate justice system, an economy dominated by special interests and continuing corruption—against its contrasting foil "Good Italy," the home of enthusiastic entrepreneurs, truth-seeking journalists, and countless citizens determined to end mafia domination for good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future at Face Value By Dale TerHaar Author Dale TerHaar studied for the ministry at Liberty University School of Life Long Learning. Dale has studied the Bible all his life and the second coming of Jesus in particular since 2000. Theologians are excited about the end of the age and the soon coming Rapture. However they seem to be changing their story which is becoming more and more like Dale’s doctrine. Everyone is interested in the approximate time the Rapture will take place and how much more persecution the Christians will have to endure. The author does not set any dates but clearly shows the things that must happen just before the Rapture takes place. Our redemption in the Day of the Lord is a part of the Gospel message and is an important doctrine all Christians share. Dale exposes why this Gospel lesson is so important and relevant for today’s believers in simple to understand language. This book will enable believers to strengthen their resolve to live for Christ in the times of trouble we live in today. Dale has titled his book The Future at Face Value because he interprets the Scriptures at face value. The Bible and the book of Revelation become very easy to understand when interpreted literally. Dale also makes sure that Scripture verses are not quoted out of the context in which they were written. In other words the Bible is only interpreted literally and at face value which is very refreshing for the reader. The reader will be delighted by the relevancy of Christ’s second coming and uniqueness of understanding the Bible literally.

Download or read book Future Face written by Sandra Kemp and published by Profile Business. This book was released on 2004 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faces are endlessly fascinating. Their diversity, their versatility and their unrivalled ability to communicate make them an enigma. Artists and scientists have been trying to unravel the mysteries of what makes a face and how it functions for thousands of years. Where does the face begin and end? It is a slender and fragile boundary, where interior and exterior worlds meet. It is part of the body and yet it is elevated and fetishised. It is where our spirit and personality manifest themselves. The closer we come to an anatomical understanding of the face, the more impenetrable it seems to become. Future Face looks at the physical characteristics of the face and at how we read faces and use them to express our thoughts and emotions. Creatively juxtaposing historical and contemporary material, Sandra Kemp takes us on a journey through the myriad ways the face has been depicted and analysed, altered and reconstructed from pre-history to the present. It encompasses the physical - skin, bones and tissue - and the conceptual, where faces are re-imagined in the virtual-reality. Kemp invites us to consider perhaps the most urgent question about the face today - whether it will continue to be shaped by genetics and evolution, or whether we will ourselves determine its appearance in the future? She asks whether our self-image can keep pace with ever-accelerating technological advances, from airbrushing and digital manipulation to cosmetic surgery and face transplants. Do we face a crisis of identity now that realms of science fiction are within the reach of possibility? Published to accompany a major exhibition by the Wellcome Trust, Sandra Kemp's ambitious and wide-ranging study explores questions around the face, its representation and function. She unpicks some complex issues using a rich mix of intriguing material, drawing on art, technology, medicine and psychology. The book also contains a complementary chapter on the psychology of the face by Vicki Bruce and one on medical technology by Alf Linney. Future Face is a provocative and at times unnerving exploration of the human face.

Book The Future of Companies in the Face of a New Reality

Download or read book The Future of Companies in the Face of a New Reality written by Griselda Dávila-Aragón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the changes brought on to economic and business activities in Latin America due to the new scenarios, environments and social dynamics the world is facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, at both micro- and macroeconomic levels. Recent changes to working environments has brought discussions on work-life balance to the forefront, and creating support mechanisms to attract and retain the next generation of workers has become a primary focus for talent managers. At an industry level, there are expectations that once the crisis passes, there will be massive capital inflows toward ESG investments in emerging markets driving the transformation of companies. Consequently, ESG business models will have a cascading effect in the whole supply chain (upstream, midstream and downstream) and will generate greater value for all stakeholders. At the same time, technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, such as Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence, have gradually been adopted by companies leading the charge in ESG business models. The financial sector has taken the lead in these two technologies, but the challenge generated by the COVID-19 pandemic forced other sectors to innovate rapidly in order to remain afloat. Using empirical and theoretical frameworks, the contributors in this book identify the most attractive alternatives to benefit consumers in an adverse environment like the one the world is facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which while posing a significant challenge for most industries, has also created new opportunities for innovation and ingenuity, analyzing case studies from the coffee and medical tourism sectors in particular.

Book The New Builders

Download or read book The New Builders written by Seth Levine and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite popular belief to the contrary, entrepreneurship in the United States is dying. It has been since before the Great Recession of 2008, and the negative trend in American entrepreneurship has been accelerated by the Covid pandemic. New firms are being started at a slower rate, are employing fewer workers, and are being formed disproportionately in just a few major cities in the U.S. At the same time, large chains are opening more locations. Companies such as Amazon with their "deliver everything and anything" are rapidly displacing Main Street businesses. In The New Builders, we tell the stories of the next generation of entrepreneurs -- and argue for the future of American entrepreneurship. That future lies in surprising places -- and will in particular rely on the success of women, black and brown entrepreneurs. Our country hasn't yet even recognized the identities of the New Builders, let alone developed strategies to support them. Our misunderstanding is driven by a core misperception. Consider a "typical" American entrepreneur. Think about the entrepreneur who appears on TV, the business leader making headlines during the pandemic. Think of the type of businesses she or he is building, the college or business school they attended, the place they grew up. The image you probably conjured is that of a young, white male starting a technology business. He's likely in Silicon Valley. Possibly New York or Boston. He's self-confident, versed in the ins and outs of business funding and has an extensive (Ivy League?) network of peers and mentors eager to help his business thrive, grow and make millions, if not billions. You’d think entrepreneurship is thriving, and helping the United States maintain its economic power. You'd be almost completely wrong. The dominant image of an entrepreneur as a young white man starting a tech business on the coasts isn't correct at all. Today's American entrepreneurs, the people who drive critical parts of our economy, are more likely to be female and non-white. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 31 times between 1972 and 2018 according to the Kauffman Foundation (in 1972, women-owned businesses accounted for just 4.6% of all firms; in 2018 that figure was 40%). The fastest-growing group of female entrepreneurs are women of color, who are responsible for 64% of new women-owned businesses being created. In a few years, we believe women will make up more than half of the entrepreneurs in America. The age of the average American entrepreneur also belies conventional wisdom: It's 42. The average age of the most successful entrepreneurs -- those in the top .01% in terms of their company's growth in the first five years -- is 45. These are the New Builders. Women, people of color, immigrants and people over 40. We're failing them. And by doing so, we are failing ourselves. In this book, you'll learn: How the definition of business success in America today has grown corporate and around the concepts of growth, size, and consumption. Why and how our collective understanding of "entrepreneurship" has dangerously narrowed. Once a broad term including people starting businesses of all types, entrepreneurship has come to describe only the brash technology founders on the way to becoming big. Who are the fastest growing groups of entrepreneurs? What are they working on? What drives them? The real engine that drove Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurs. The government had a much bigger role than is widely known The extent to which entrepreneurs and small businesses are woven through our history, and the ways we have forgotten women and people of color who owned small businesses in the past. How we're increasingly afraid to fail The role small businesses are playing saving the wilderness, small towns and redlined communities What we can do to turn the decline in entrepreneurship around, especially be supporting the people who are courageously starting small companies today.
