Book Inside Dartmouth Athletics

Download or read book Inside Dartmouth Athletics written by Brian D. Mann and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first class I took in the MALS program was Oral History in Theory and Practice. Not only was the genre of oral history new to me, but this was also the first time I had been in a classroom in nearly a decade. Needless to say, I wasn't sure what to expect. To my surprise, I discovered that my natural curiosity to learn about the past through first-hand accounts was ideally suited to the field of oral history, where one tells a story through the words of others. Equally surprising was that Professors Harvey and Myrna Frommer were excited about my role in the athletic department and they encouraged me to explore a final project that related to my career. As a result, I chose to tell the story of the 1970 Dartmouth football team. On the surface, it was a tale about one of the greatest seasons in the history of the College. But I recognized that the story went much deeper than the limited scope I was permitted for a class project and I wanted to learn more. What I found most fascinating was the behind-the-scenes decision making that proved instrumental to the team's success on the field. As an aspiring athletic director, I wanted to further explore the topic and learn more about building a great team, a great department, and a great experience for young men and women. But I wanted to do so at an institution that places tremendous value on the undergraduate education - a seemingly rare combination these days. My thesis explores the idea that it is indeed possible to have both a successful Division I athletic program and high academic standards. Using Dartmouth as an exemplar of this balance, I interviewed coaches, administrators, admissions officers, faculty members and student-athletes and explored both the process of running a program effectively as well as the philosophical underpinning necessary to maintain the proper academic-athletic balance. I hope this work will grant the reader a behind-the-scenes look at the struggles necessary to achieve an ideal that in some respects may be considered a dying notion.

Book Dartmouth Athletics

Download or read book Dartmouth Athletics written by John Henry Bartlett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dartmouth Athletics: A Complete History of All Kinds of Sports at the College Readers of this book should keep constantly in mind three facts which have been very stubborn ones at all times that Dartmouth students are somewhat removed from the large centres of activities, and hence have few opportunities for friendly tests and competition; that her facilities for physical culture have been of the hum blest, and that short purses have necessitated close atten tion to remunerative employment; with these factors duly entering into the account, the record must seem to candid judges a very creditable one. Dartmouth has taken its full share of pennants, and when not able to secure the coveted prize, has maintained a prominent and honorable place in the contest, giving her a high average among the New England colleges in the athletic arena. Book Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings

Download or read book Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings written by Annette Gordon-Reed and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998-03-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Annette Gordon-Reed's groundbreaking study was first published, rumors of Thomas Jefferson's sexual involvement with his slave Sally Hemings had circulated for two centuries. Among all aspects of Jefferson's renowned life, it was perhaps the most hotly contested topic. The publication of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings intensified this debate by identifying glaring inconsistencies in many noted scholars' evaluations of the existing evidence. In this study, Gordon-Reed assembles a fascinating and convincing argument: not that the alleged thirty-eight-year liaison necessarily took place but rather that the evidence for its taking place has been denied a fair hearing. Friends of Jefferson sought to debunk the Hemings story as early as 1800, and most subsequent historians and biographers followed suit, finding the affair unthinkable based upon their view of Jefferson's life, character, and beliefs. Gordon-Reed responds to these critics by pointing out numerous errors and prejudices in their writings, ranging from inaccurate citations, to impossible time lines, to virtual exclusions of evidence—especially evidence concerning the Hemings family. She demonstrates how these scholars may have been misguided by their own biases and may even have tailored evidence to serve and preserve their opinions of Jefferson. This updated edition of the book also includes an afterword in which the author comments on the DNA study that provided further evidence of a Jefferson and Hemings liaison. Possessing both a layperson's unfettered curiosity and a lawyer's logical mind, Annette Gordon-Reed writes with a style and compassion that are irresistible. Each chapter revolves around a key figure in the Hemings drama, and the resulting portraits are engrossing and very personal. Gordon-Reed also brings a keen intuitive sense of the psychological complexities of human relationships—relationships that, in the real world, often develop regardless of status or race. The most compelling element of all, however, is her extensive and careful research, which often allows the evidence to speak for itself. Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy is the definitive look at a centuries-old question that should fascinate general readers and historians alike.

Book Resilient by Nature

Download or read book Resilient by Nature written by Reggie Williams and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In so many ways, Reggie Williams has had the type of life that people dream of: he starred as an athlete, excelled with an Ivy League education, built a sports empire as part of an iconic corporate brand, achieved global impact as a public servant, and won major honors for his community work. Along the way, Williams glowed on the biggest stages alongside celebrities, business leaders, and social icons. Yet Williams’s life has also presented a nightmare—and a determined mission to score another victory—with the battle to save his right leg from amputation. The residual effects of a fourteen-year career as an NFL linebacker has challenged Williams—who has undergone twenty-eight surgeries for football injuries, including multiple knee replacement operations—to draw on the resilience that has been at the foundation of his rise from the beginning. In Resilient by Nature, Williams provides an intimate account of his remarkable journey while also sharing his unique perspectives on a wide variety of issues.
