Download or read book The Ascent of Humanity written by Charles Eisenstein and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible explores the history and potential future of civilization, tracing the converging crises of our age to the illusion of the separate self Our disconnection from one another and the natural world has mislaid the foundations of science, religion, money, technology, economics, medicine, and education as we know them. It has fired our near-pathological pursuit of technological Utopias even as we push ourselves and our planet to the brink of collapse. Fortunately, an Age of Reunion is emerging out of the birth pangs of an earth in crisis. Our journey of separation hasn't been a terrible mistake but an evolutionary process and an adventure in self-discovery. Even in our darkest hour, Eisenstein sees the possibility of a more beautiful world—not through the extension of millennia-old methods of management and control but by fundamentally reimagining ourselves and our systems. We must shift away from our Babelian efforts to build ever-higher towers to heaven and instead turn out attention to creating a new kind of civilization—one designed for beauty rather than height.

The several chapters offer accounts of how questions are formulated and how data are collected, stored, and intepreted in the various research traditions of dialectology and sociolinguistics, particularly as they have been carried out by researchers associated with the American Dialect Society. More specifically, this book takes trips to the scholar's laboratory. How is this work done? What pitfalls in fieldwork, processing, and interpretation have been encountered and how have they been overcome? What techniques have been used to get at the facts and underlying explanations of language variety? What does recent work suggest about the most rewarding areas and methods for future investigation?

Book The Play of Space

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rush Rehm
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-07-21
  • ISBN : 1400825075
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book The Play of Space written by Rush Rehm and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is "space" a thing, a container, an abstraction, a metaphor, or a social construct? This much is certain: space is part and parcel of the theater, of what it is and how it works. In The Play of Space, noted classicist-director Rush Rehm offers a strikingly original approach to the spatial parameters of Greek tragedy as performed in the open-air theater of Dionysus. Emphasizing the interplay between natural place and fictional setting, between the world visible to the audience and that evoked by individual tragedies, Rehm argues for an ecology of the ancient theater, one that "nests" fifth-century theatrical space within other significant social, political, and religious spaces of Athens. Drawing on the work of James J. Gibson, Kurt Lewin, and Michel Foucault, Rehm crosses a range of disciplines--classics, theater studies, cognitive psychology, archaeology and architectural history, cultural studies, and performance theory--to analyze the phenomenology of space and its transformations in the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. His discussion of Athenian theatrical and spatial practice challenges the contemporary view that space represents a "text" to be read, or constitutes a site of structural dualities (e.g., outside-inside, public-private, nature-culture). Chapters on specific tragedies explore the spatial dynamics of homecoming ("space for returns"); the opposed constraints of exile ("eremetic space" devoid of normal community); the power of bodies in extremis to transform their theatrical environment ("space and the body"); the portrayal of characters on the margin ("space and the other"); and the tragic interactions of space and temporality ("space, time, and memory"). An appendix surveys pre-Socratic thought on space and motion, related ideas of Plato and Aristotle, and, as pertinent, later views on space developed by Newton, Leibniz, Descartes, Kant, and Einstein. Eloquently written and with Greek texts deftly translated, this book yields rich new insights into our oldest surviving drama.

Book A History of Tatarstan

  • Author : Kees Boterbloem
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2023-10-10
  • ISBN : 166692685X
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book A History of Tatarstan written by Kees Boterbloem and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Tatarstan: The Russian Yoke and the Vanishing Tatars surveys the history of the Tatar people living along the Volga river. It argues that the Volga Tatars were Russia’s first colonized people and after their subjugation in 1552, the Tatars have been continually mistreated by their Russian rulers, even when the nature of the Russian regime changed over time. For a long period the Tatars managed to evade overly deep Russian intrusion into their lives, after the middle of the 1850s Russian and Soviet authorities obliterated their traditional way of life. Despite efforts at restoring a measure of Tatar independence in the 1990s, russification has led to a marked fall in those identifying as Tatar in the Russian Federation pointing at the possibility of a disappearance altogether of the Volga Tatars.

  • Author : Deidra Riggs
  • Publisher : Baker Books
  • Release : 2017-04-04
  • ISBN : 1493406523
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book One written by Deidra Riggs and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus didn't say that the world would know we are his followers by our biting rhetoric, our political leanings, our charity work, or even by our knowledge of Scripture. He said the world would know us by our love for one another. Yet it's so easy to put others at arm's length, to lash out, to put up walls. Deidra Riggs wants us to put our focus on self-preservation aside and, like Jesus, make the first move toward reconciliation. In One, Riggs shows readers that when Jesus offered himself up in our place, he was not only purchasing our salvation but also setting an example for us to follow. She helps readers understand that they are secure in God's inexhaustible love, making them free to love others lavishly--not just in what they do but in what they say, what they don't say, what they will endure, and what they will forgive. Anyone who longs for unity in the church, in their family, and in their community will find in this book both inspiring examples of loving done well and encouragement to begin the often unnoticed hard work of building bridges with those around them.

Book Defiant Prophets

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hillel I. Millgram
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2022-04-27
  • ISBN : 1476644721
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Defiant Prophets written by Hillel I. Millgram and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the tales of three remarkable figures of the biblical world: the tragic prophet Jeremiah, and the two atypical prophets Jonah and Balaam. Jeremiah was cursed from birth and condemned to a lifelong losing battle against national disaster. Jonah was notorious for his connection with a whale, whereas Balaam was best known as the owner of a talking donkey. Yet these prophets (servants of their deity) are portrayed as rebels against their god. This book contends that these tales, beyond their intrinsic appeal as stories, were written to serve as metaphors. Although set in ancient times and in the exotic Near East, the issues that underlie these gripping tales are not unfamiliar to modern times and Western lives. These prophets represent "everyman" and these unusual dramas explore the phenomenon of revolt against restrictive conditions and against authority.
