Book excerpt: Sam lives at home with his loving parents, sisters and brother. England is at peace at last, following the ravages of the Second World War, and is about to witness the advent of The Beatles and the social revolution of the 1960s. As a boy, Sam loves riding his bike and playing in the large family garden. But beneath this happy exterior, there are things going round in Sam’s head which terrify him, which he can share with no-one and which he continues to carry through his adolescent years and into manhood. Spanning several decades, Further Up the Beach is a profoundly moving story of personal identity, family life and intergenerational love and conflict. With powerful themes of social class, aspiration and a search for emotional intimacy between males, we go hand in hand with Sam in this unflinching, poignant and ultimately optimistic tale.

Book Further Up the Inverted Pyramid

Download or read book Further Up the Inverted Pyramid written by George Wilson and published by Book Guild Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third of George Wilson’s fascinating explanations of his personal spiritual philosophy, first outlined in his previous books At Last I Know and Through the Doors of Time. The author interweaves his profound spiritual observations with recollections of his life, from childhood days in Motherwell to a career in heavy industry that took the author and his family wherever there was work, including Zambia and South Africa. These reminiscences are often humorous, though sometimes poignant and deeply moving. Reflecting on his profound observations and supporting them with references from the Bible, the author explains his theory on the nature of the human soul and its relationship with God. Personal tragedy has led to the author taking his lifelong belief in a benign supernatural force and eternal reincarnation to a greater depth, from where he has taken solace. George Wilson was born in Flemington, Scotland, and pursued a career in industry as a Comprehensive International Welding Inspector. He retired in 2003 and currently lives in South Africa.

Book Upon Further Review

Download or read book Upon Further Review written by Mike Pesca and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Mike Pesca, host of the popular Slate podcast The Gist, comes the greatest sports minds imagining how the world would change if a play, trade, injury, or referee's call had just gone the other way. "Intriguing...thought provoking...delightful." --The Washington Post No announcer ever proclaimed: "Up Rises Frazier!" "Havlicek commits the foul, trying to steal the ball!" or "The Giants Lose the Pennant, The Giants Lose The Pennant!" Such moments are indelibly etched upon the mind of every sports fan. Or rather, they would be, had they happened. Sports are notoriously games of inches, and when we conjure the thought of certain athletes - like Bill Buckner or Scott Norwood - we can't help but apply a mental tape measure to the highlight reels of our minds. Players, coaches, and of course fans, obsess on the play when they ask, "What if?" Upon Further Review is the first book to answer that question. Upon Further Review is a book of counterfactual sporting scenarios. In its pages the reader will find expertly reported histories, where one small event is flipped on its head, and the resulting ripples are carefully documented, the likes of... What if the U.S. Boycotted Hitler's Olympics? What if Bobby Riggs beat Billie Jean King? What if Bucky Dent popped out at the foot of the Green Monster? What if Drew Bledsoe never got hurt? Upon Further Review takes classic arguments conducted over pints in a pub and places them in the hands of dozens of writers, athletes, and historians. From turning points that every sports fan rues or celebrates, to the forgotten would-be inflection points that defined sports, Upon Further Review answers age old questions, and settles the score, even if the score bounced off the crossbar.

Book Through the Wardrobe How C S Lewis Created Narnia

Download or read book Through the Wardrobe How C S Lewis Created Narnia written by Lina Maslo and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical nonfiction picture book about the inspired life of C. S. Lewis, the beloved author of the Chronicles of Narnia—from Free as a Bird author-illustrator Lina Maslo. Perfect for fans of The Important Thing About Margaret Wise Brown and Some Writer!: The Story of E.B. White. As a child, Clive Staples Lewis imagined many things . . . heroic animals and knights in armor and a faraway land called Boxen. He even thought of a new name for himself—at four years old, he decided he was more of a Jack. As he grew up, though, Jack found that the real world was not as just as the one in his imagination. No magic could heal the sick or stop a war, and a bully’s words could pierce as sharply as a sword. So Jack withdrew into books and eventually became a well-known author for adults. But he never forgot the epic tales of his boyhood, and one day a young girl’s question about an old family wardrobe inspired him to write a children’s story about a world hidden beyond its fur coats . . . a world of fauns and queens and a lion named Aslan. A world of battles between good and evil, where people learned courage and love and forgiveness. A magical realm called Narnia. And the books he would write about this kingdom would change his life and that of children the world over. Share this magical nonfiction picture book at home or in the classroom.

Book Further Adventures of the Celestial Sleuth

Download or read book Further Adventures of the Celestial Sleuth written by Donald W. Olson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of "Celestial Sleuth" (2014), yet more mysteries in art, history, and literature are solved by calculating phases of the Moon, determining the positions of the planets and stars, and identifying celestial objects in paintings. In addition to helping to crack difficult cases, these studies spark our imagination and provide a better understanding of the skies. Weather archives, vintage maps, tides, historical letters and diaries, military records and the assistance of experts in related fields help with this work. For each historical event influenced by astronomy, there is a different kind of mystery to be solved. How did the changing tides affect an army's battle plans? How did the phases of the moon affect how an artist painted a landscape? Follow these exciting investigations with a master “celestial sleuth” as he tracks down the truth and helps unravel mysteries as far back as the Middle Ages and as recent as the iconic 1945 photograph of a kiss in Times Square on VJ Day. Topics or "cases" pursued were chosen for their wide public recognition and intrigue and involve artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet; historical events such as the campaigns of Braveheart in Scotland and battles in World War II and the Korean War; and literary authors such as Chaucer, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Byron, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Book C S Lewis s Dangerous Idea

Download or read book C S Lewis s Dangerous Idea written by Victor Reppert and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-09-20 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who ought to hold claim to the more dangerous idea--Charles Darwin or C. S. Lewis? Daniel Dennett argued for Darwin in Darwin's Dangerous Idea (Touchstone Books, 1996). In this book Victor Reppert champions C. S. Lewis. Darwinists attempt to use science to show that our world and its inhabitants can be fully explained as the product of a mindless, purposeless system of physics and chemistry. But Lewis claimed in his argument from reason that if such materialism or naturalism were true then scientific reasoning itself could not be trusted. Victor Reppert believes that Lewis's arguments have been too often dismissed. In C. S. Lewis's Dangerous Idea Reppert offers careful, able development of Lewis's thought and demonstrates that the basic thrust of Lewis's argument from reason can bear up under the weight of the most serious philosophical attacks. Charging dismissive critics, Christian and not, with ad hominem arguments, Reppert also revisits the debate and subsequent interaction between Lewis and the philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe. And addressing those who might be afflicted with philosophical snobbery, Reppert demonstrates that Lewis's powerful philosophical instincts perhaps ought to place him among those other thinkers who, by contemporary standards, were also amateurs: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza, Locke and Hume. But even more than this, Reppert's work exemplifies the truth that the greatness of Lewis's mind is best measured, not by his ability to do our thinking for us, but by his capacity to provide sound direction for taking our own thought further up and further in.
