Book The Organic Constituents of Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Organic Constituents of Soils Classic Reprint written by Oswald Schreiner and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organic Constituents of Soils The reports on the various phases of soil studies by the investigators who have preceded me in this symposium must have impressed you with the fact that the subject of soil fertility and infertility is by no means a simple matter of arithmetic, which involves only a few of the mineral constituents of the soil. It must also have become clear to you that the problem of soil fertility or infertility has not been solved by the application of these simple arithmetical means based on soil analysis or by the crop statistics accumulated in the years which have elapsed since Liebig first announced his views on soil fertility, which gamed for him for all time the title of "Father of Agricultural Chemistry." It is particularly gratifying to me, since I am to talk to you to-day on the subject of the organic constituents of soils, their chemical nature and other properties, that Liebig is also known as the "Father of Organic Chemistry." To what tremendous proportions and significance in the worlds industries and science this child of his (Organic Chemistry) has grown is familiar to all of you, and I assure you that Liebig, were he to return to-day, would be proud of its parentage. But I fear he would be displeased with his other child, as having made so little progress in the intervening years, although he started it in life strong and virile and full of promise. Up to a few years ago agriculture had not shared in the great impulses which modern science has given to other arts and industries, and the domination of the mineral-requirement theory proposed in the first half of the last century and accepted without adequate proof of its validity is largely responsible for the lack of development in agriculture, commensurate with the enormous strides of other arts and industries under the guidance of modern scientific thought and research. But a new era of scientific inquiry is at hand, and all phases of scientific endeavor are being applied to the solution of the problems connected with soil fertility and infertility - lines of endeavor which were not even known in Liebig's time, but which to-day are well-recognized factors in soil fertility. Book Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil Classic Reprint written by Robert Warington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil The behaviour of actual soils under known conditions has been made as far as possible the foundation of the conclusions drawn. A great mass of results has accumulated from the investigations made in the very numerous Agricultural Experiment Stations in Europe and America; with these results the agricultural teacher is too often unacquainted. His valid excuse is the scattered publication of the reports, and his want of time to correlate the several results recorded. The writer hopes that the publication of these lectures will stimulate others to labour in the abundant harvest field of Experiment Station Reports. It must ever be borne in mind that it is only on the results of experimental investigations that Agricultural Science can be safely built. The reader will probably be surprised that so little is said respecting English soils, and so much respecting the soils of America. The writer heartily wishes that this might have been otherwise. In fact, however, the physical constitution and properties of English soils have as yet not been investigated, save in a very few exceptional cases; this has been doubtless due to the great lack of investigators and research laboratories in this country. The general properties of soils can of course be equally well illustrated by any well studied examples, but the deficiency of knowledge of our own local soils is nevertheless a very real evil, and must greatly hinder the practical application of general principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Value of Swamp Lands, or How to Make Unproductive Black Soils More Valuable We often hear farmers make that statement and there is much truth in it. Many of these places represent the bottoms of old ponds. The water having dried out or escaped in some way so as to leave the bottom bare. Here Nature has locked up great treasures of plant food, and in doing so, as we shall see, carried the key away with her. Book World reference base for soil resources 2014

Download or read book World reference base for soil resources 2014 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a revised and updated version of World Soil Resources Reports No. 84 and 103 and presents the international soil classification system. Every soil in the world can be allocated to one of the 32 Reference Soil Groups as defined in this document, and can further be characterized by a set of qualifiers. The resulting soil name provides information on soil genesis, soil ecological function and soil properties relevant for land use and management. The same system, refined slightly, may be used to name the units of soil map legends, thereby providing comprehensive spatial information. By accommodating national soil classification systems, the World Reference Base facilitates the worldwide correlation of soil information.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Digital Soil Mapping with Limited Data

Download or read book Digital Soil Mapping with Limited Data written by Alfred E. Hartemink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signi?cant technological advances have been few and far between in the past approximately one hundred years of soil survey activities. Perhaps one of the most innovative techniques in the history of soil survey was the introduction of aerial photographs as base maps for ?eld mapping, which replaced the conventional base map laboriously prepared by planetable and alidade. Such a relatively simple idea by today’s standards revolutionized soil surveys by vastly increasing the accuracy and ef?ciently. Yet, even this innovative approach did not gain universal acceptance immediately and was hampered by a lack of aerial coverage of the world, funds to cover the costs, and in some cases a reluctance by some soil mappers and cartog- phers to change. Digital Soil Mapping (DSM), which is already being used and tested by groups of dedicated and innovative pedologists, is perhaps the next great advancement in delivering soil survey information. However, like many new technologies, it too has yet to gain universal acceptance and is hampered by ignorance on the part of some pedologists and other scientists. DSM is a spatial soil information system created by numerical models that - count for the spatial and temporal variations of soil properties based on soil - formation and related environmental variables (Lagacheric and McBratney, 2007).

Book The Soils of Nepal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roshan Babu Ojha
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-10-14
  • ISBN : 3030809994
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book The Soils of Nepal written by Roshan Babu Ojha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book publishes consolidated information on the soils of Nepal from all possible sources. The Survey Department, Government of Nepal, conducted two national scale soil survey projects to classify soils of Nepal (Land Resource Mapping Project ended in 1985, and National Land Use Planning Project ended in 2021). Both projects adopted the United States Department of Agriculture system of soil classification. Besides, National Soil Science Research Center (previously known as Soil Science Division) of Nepal Agricultural Research Council and Soil Management Directorate, Department of Agriculture, also worked on soils of Nepal. To date, the information on the soils of Nepal is not published in well-documented form but has been reported widely as gray literature (project report or government report) or peer-review articles. 'The Soils of Nepal’ is a part of ‘World Soils Book Series’ which constitutes twelve chapters—covering broad aspects such as soil research history, climate, geology, soil classification and mapping, and soil fertility. Furthermore, information about soil properties and relation between soil constituents of the dominant soil types of Nepal and their scope of use in the context of land use are described. This book also tries to simplify the intricate relationship among soil, culture, and people. Each chapter contains a comprehensive, richly illustrated, and up-to-date overview of the soils of Nepal. We believe it fulfils a quest for a global audience including students, educators, extension workers, and soil scientists, who are interested to know the young soils of Nepal.
