Book excerpt: Is there a universal consciousness in whose consciousness we live, move, and have our being? The exploration of consciousness is the final frontier in the exploration of life and the mysteries of existence - its origin, its on-going presence - as well as for answering questions that intellectual analysis cannot answer because it is based on the speculations of the five senses. Consider then that within every human being there are simultaneous states of existence that are active - predating human life, during human life, and beyond human life. Participate in this world of illusions but always retain the light of universal awareness, wherever your soul's purpose path may lead you. - Dr. Paul Leon Masters

Book The Gift of Mystical Insight

Download or read book The Gift of Mystical Insight written by Emmanuel J. Karavousanos and published by . This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Life to Live is the intelligent person's guide to a better life. It is unique, because it appeals to the reader's common sense and good reason. No helping hands, no unusual practices, and no commitments to mystical powers are required. There is no organizational membership prerequisite to a good life. The author proposes that it is within the Self, alone, that the reader will find happiness. Recognition of the self as an independent entity, subject to self-direction, is essential. We have choices. Each action we take might have been a different action. With attentiveness and understanding, we can consciously opt for a better life. A good person enjoys a good life. This book is for young adults dealing with the stress, demands and contradictions of modern life: relationships, jobs and values. It examines the aspects of love, the gravity of attachments, and the paradox that selflessness is in one's own self interest. The author relies on his own experience and the wisdom of the past, when writers then were largely concerned with how one lives life well. With only one life to live, why not live it well?

Book Mystical Moments and Unitive Thinking

Download or read book Mystical Moments and Unitive Thinking written by Dan Merkur and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1999-02-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merkur proposes an alternative to the traditional psychoanalytic explanation of mystical experiences as regression to the solipsism of earliest infancy. He does this by viewing unitive thinking as a line of cognitive development, and mystical moments as creative inspirations on unitive topics. Utilizing classical self-reports by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim mystics, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and modern Western peak experiences, Merkur argues that experiences of mystical union are manifestations of a broader category of psychological processes that manifest in scientific and moral thought, as well as in mysticism. Unconscious as well as conscious, unitive thinking is sometimes realistic and sometimes fantastic, in patterns that are consistent with cognitive development in general. Mystical moments of unitive thinking may be considered moments of creative inspiration that happen to make use of unitive ideas. Building on the psychoanalytic object-relations theory that the self is always in relationship with an object, Merkur argues that the solipsism of some varieties of mystical union always implies unconscious ideas of a love object who is transcendent.

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Seeing Knowing Being written by John Greer and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ancient Taoist sages and Sufi mystics to Christian contemplatives and contemporary Zen masters, Seeing, Knowing, Being explores the profound truth behind all the world’s mystic traditions: Living a spiritual life has nothing to do with fixing ourselves. It is simply a matter of awakening to what we already are. The real work of self-discovery-and the answer to our suffering, emptiness, and loss of meaning-is learning to see in a different way. “The mystical adventure is all in the seeing, says John Greer. “From departure to arrival, nothing changes but our eyes. But the process isn’t that simple. In this all-embracing work that is destined to become a classic, Greer artfully traces the steps and stages of the delicate process of awakening. He shows how we can move from society’s hand-me-down version of reality to the wonder of our true nature-from conceptual, habitual patterns of thinking to knowing the truth by being. Like a master artist who captures an image and stirs something deep inside of us, Greer also highlights nearly one hundred evocative metaphors, as varied and colorful as the sages themselves, to kindle your imagination and spark your intuition-to shift your perspective and shake you into an awareness that no amount of explanation can. What Greer shows, with great wisdom and compassion, is that when you put aside the map of the mind, you can follow the compass of your heart. You can move through the details of life-going to work, raising a family, throwing out the garbage-and still experience the wonders and oneness of life with deep reverence, gratitude, and joy. “Books often describe journeys. Seeing, Knowing, Being actually takes you on one. . . . A profound expedition into the true nature of life. -MATTHEW FLICKSTEIN, author and producer of the award-winning film With One Voice

Book Spirituality as Insight

Download or read book Spirituality as Insight written by Frans Maas and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with mystical texts and theological reflection with reference to spiritual insight. in the first place the author shows, with reference to two great figures in the Christian mystical tradition - Meister Eckhart and John of the Cross - how coming to insight involves a three-fold rhythm: being touched, losing one's sight and the finding of insight as this relates to the quality of life. The author discusses in the next chapters three other authors: Therese of Lisieux, Etty Hillesum and Dag Hammarskjold. They were themselves readers of mystical literature and stand closer to us in time. Current questions of meaning, especially as it relates to suffering, influence the framework in which they viewed quality of life. In their writings one can see an unmistakable growth to an extraordinaryly intensive experience of God which enables them to face life with a more than ordinary power and inspiration.

Book The Mystical Accord

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Tunney
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2019-05-31
  • ISBN : 9781092324137
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book The Mystical Accord written by James Tunney and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are we? Who are we? Are we just some kind of lucky animal that evolved and are now almost too clever for our own good? Does evolution explain everything? Religion? The Mystical Accord argues that the history of mysticism gives us a consistent pattern to help answer the biggest questions. Spiritual evolution is ignored with the growth of technocratic societies. The nature of Mysticism is outlined in the book's Introduction. Mysticism deals with inexplicable, supernatural, metaphysical domains beyond the limitations of reason. Mystics deal with spiritual growth and the meaning of life. Mysticism is a vision of an individual, spiritual, inner pilgrimage towards enlightenment and revelation. Being individual does not mean the mystic is outside religious tradition, indeed they often cause and contribute towards it. Mysticism overlaps with psychology, metaphysics, magic and esoteric studies. History and practice demonstrate a recurrent process with lessons for everybody. When the idea of spirit, free will and consciousness is under attack, we must reflect on what is at stake. The Mystical Accord suggests that we acknowledge being spiritual beings. We are individual, conscious beings, beneficiaries of pre-existing consciousness. Science has failed to explain the nature and origin of consciousness. From those foundations we see a similar pathway indicated by most spiritual traditions. That involves looking at our self and working to discard what is false, negative and destructive to come to our true self in a process of transcending the ego. True self is closer to our spirit, our original consciousness and allows 'nexus to the numinous'. Most evolved spiritual traditions promote values such as compassion as the star to follow on this path. Mystical perceptions reflect perennial philosophy and parallel the hero's journey. It is necessary to comprehend spiritual growth when opposing forces of control seek to diminish the spirit. Science, technology and material prosperity produce undeniable benefits but need to be balanced. They are servants not masters. Hostile to our own spiritual dimension we may sink into a straitjacket of technological servitude. The quiet voice of conscience is often the gift of the mystic. The Mystical Accord suggests the need for an accord or alignment between our head and heart in the process of spiritual evolution. Mystical traditions suggest that the fruits of the spiritual path pursued in a disciplined way, lead to profound clarity and inner peace, joyous and persistent. We may avoid confronting great existential questions but they never go away. If we look at the pattern of similar mystical observations, we make sense of the outside intellectually and the inner spiritually. Looking at universal experiences of mystics we discern positive messages that help us. The Mystical Accord is a structure superimposed on existing spiritual systems like a transparency that does not seek to disturb them. Many people have lost touch with their own religions. Many never had religion nor even spirituality. The mystical journey exists independently of the outside world but is informed by the experience of others, irrespective of beliefs. It is ignorant to avoid the parallels but silly to ignore the different destinations that spiritual vehicles will bring you. This involves the distinction between the exoteric and esoteric. The person who follows the rules of their religion without an inner transformation will lose much. The introduction explains the notion of mysticism. However the book is principally written in the form of lines of 17 syllables like modern haikus or contemporary sutras. Spiritual and mystical expression has a long history of short sentences like building bricks. All around the globe, mystics seek to explore their inner world and share it through words or actions. The method of the poet and the brevity of single lines allow truths to be stated, simply or in more cryptic ways.

Download or read book Christian Mystics written by Carl McColman and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Mystics: 108 Seers, Saints and Sages celebrates the many types of mystics, visionaries, wisdom keepers, and non-dualists whose spiritual insight and perceptive teachings have illuminated the Christian tradition for the past two thousand years. Looking at 108 mystics from Biblical times to the present day, this user-friendly guide shows how the spiritual masters of the western tradition provide a variety of paths into the transforming heart of God. Everyone needs teachers and companions to guide and nurture us in developing rich interior lives -- as we seek to respond to the beatifying, deifying love of God. The mystics, whose legacy includes sublime poetry, fascinating autobiographies, and potentially life-changing teachings, can help anyone find greater love, purpose, and a deeper sense of God's presence. But the mystics are not a uniform bunch, which is why this book is such an essential guide to their lives, wisdom, and essential teachings. Carl McColman, author of The Big Book of Christian Mysticism, organizes the mystics into nine categories: visionaries, confessors, lovers, poets, saints, heretics, wisdom keepers, soul-friends, and unitives. By profiling twelve examples of great mystics and spiritual teachers in each category, the book can help you to learn more about the mystics, and identify those whose writings will be most valuable to you as you pursue your own adventure of falling ever more deeply in love with God.All of the most famous Christian mystics are profiled here: figures like Teresa of çvila, Meister Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, John of the Cross, Evelyn Underhill, Thomas Merton, and anonymous masters like the authors of classics like The Cloud of Unknowing or The Way of a Pilgrim. But the book also will introduce you to many lesser known (but truly wonderful) mystical geniuses, such as Beatrice of Nazareth, Gregory of Narek, and Coventry Patmore. Nor does the book shy away from living (or recently living) mystics: visionaries such as Howard Thurman, Sara Grant, Kenneth Leech, and Bruno Barnhart are all included. This informative volume will appeal to those who buy religious reference books and anyone interested in Christian mysticism or western spirituality. But it's more than just a history book or an encyclopedia: Christian Mystics: 108 Seers, Saints and Sages is a curated celebration of western spiritual wisdom, making it accessible for all seekers today.

Book Mysticism and Vocation

    Book Details:
  • Author : James R. Horne
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2006-01-01
  • ISBN : 0889207704
  • Pages : 121 pages

Download or read book Mysticism and Vocation written by James R. Horne and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to think that a person who is both reasonable and moral can have a good life. What constitutes a life that is not only good but superlative, or even “marvellous” or “holy”? Those who have such lives are called sages, heroes or saints, and their lives can display great integrity as well as integration with a transformative “Spiritual Presence.” Does it follow that saints are perfect people? Is there a common vision that impels them to seek holiness? In a controversial interpretation of mysticism Horne suggests that there is no single formula for the meaning of life and no one story that displays it to us. Mysticism, rather than being just a visionary perception, then becomes a problem-solving process that brings about a creative transformation of the personality at a critical stage in life. He suggests also that saints may be imperfect morally and describes true saints as double-minded: they are serious in a playful way. Mysticism and Vocation illuminates our understanding of saintly lives by explicating their mystical characteristics and extending discussions of mysticism to explain its role in active lives. In discussing important decisions that go beyond conventional morality, it adds to recent philosophical arguments by Charles Taylor, Alasdair MacIntyre, Iris Murdoch, Bernard Williams and others to the effect that morality should be defined more broadly to deal with the human condition. This book will be of interest to students of philosophy and religious studies, in both graduate and undergraduate programs.
