Download or read book Matiatia written by Paul Monin and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matiatia Bay is the gateway to Waiheke Island. Lying beside the island's best natural harbour, it has been the landing place for Maori waka, settler barges, tourist yachts and commuter ferries today. This beautiful heritage site is threatened by development - a marina is proposed, and intensive parking. Establishing the significance of the past, historian Paul Monin tells Matiatia's story from early Maori occupation to the present day. Here in a fertile bay in the magnificent setting of the Hauraki Gulf is a microcosm of New Zealand's history. Charmingly written, MATIATIA: GATEWAY TO WAIHEKE includes a rich array of photographs and maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes sources relating to a range of social and cultural contexts, including the proliferation of natural history crazes (ferns, aquaria, orchids, etc); debates about the social and environmental impacts of changing land use in town and country; debates about demographics, population, and resources inspired by Thomas Malthus; attempts to preserve landscapes (e.g., The Commons Preservation Society), debates about hunger, poverty, and disease in the countryside, particularly during the ‘Hungry Forties’, and relating to the Captain Swing and Chartist disturbances; the rise of land Utopianism and rural Utopian community projects; the rise of new forms of rural leisure; aesthetic engagements with rural enviroments and new world travel; and debates about pollution (especially water pollution). The volume will also turn to a range of literary sources from the period prior to 1858 to illustrate the ways in which changing attitudes to environments emerged in fiction. These include extracts from Dickens’s early works, the hunting novels of R. S. Surtees, the social novels of Harriet Martineau, Charlotte Tonna, Charles Kingsley and Margaret Oliphant, John Ruskin’s environmental fairytale, ‘The King of the Golden River’, chartist fiction, Victorian children’s fiction, and adventure novels.
Download or read book Te Puna A New Zealand Mission Station written by Angela Middleton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical missionary societies have been associated with the processes of colonisation throughout the globe, from India to Africa and into the Pacific. In late 18th-century Britain, the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East (CMS) began its missionary ventures, and in the first decade of the 19th-century, sent three of its members to New South Wales, Australia, and then on to New Zealand, an unknown, little-explored part of the world. Across the globe, a common material culture travelled with its evangelizing (and later colonizing) settlers, with artefacts appearing as cultural markers from Cape Town in South Africa, to Tasmania in Australia and the even more remote Bay of Islands in New Zealand. After missionization, colonization occurred. Additionally, common themes of interaction with indigenous peoples, household economy, the development of commerce, and social and gender relations also played out in these communities. This work is unique in that it provides the first archaeological examination of a New Zealand mission station, and as such, makes an important contribution to New Zealand historical archaeology and history. It also situates the case study in a global context, making a significant contribution to the international field of mission archaeology. It informs a wider audience about the processes of colonization and culture contact in New Zealand, along with the details of the material culture of the country’s first European settlers, providing a point of comparison with other outposts of British colonization.

Book excerpt: "Remembered by many as an eccentric folk hero who walked the length of New Zealand at the age of 85, and from Sydney to Melbourne at the age of 89, Alf (A.H.) Reed was a pioneering publisher, prolific author and selfless benefactor." "Leaving school at the age of 12, he transcended his working roots in New Zealand's Northland gumfields to found the publishing firm of A.H. & A.W. Reed. He and his wife Belle were devout Christians and the firm's first publications were for Sunday schools. But he was also a shrewd businessman and, with his nephew Clif (A.W.) Reed, published a growing range of books on New Zealand's landscape and lifestyle. After his official retirement in 1940, he wrote prodigiously, including books about his long-distance walks. When he was at home, he devoted time and funds to building up a collection of rare manuscripts and books at the Dunedin Public Library."--BOOK JACKET.
