Book excerpt: The price of college tuition has increased more than any other major good or service for the last twenty years. Nine out of ten American high school seniors aspire to go to college, yet the United States has fallen from world leader to only the tenth most educated nation. Almost half of college students don't graduate; those who do have unprecedented levels of federal and private student loan debt, which constitutes a credit bubble similar to the mortgage crisis. The system particularly fails the first-generation, the low-income, and students of color who predominate in coming generations. What we need to know is changing more quickly than ever, and a rising tide of information threatens to swamp knowledge and wisdom. America cannot regain its economic and cultural leadership with an increasingly ignorant population. Our choice is clear: Radically change the way higher education is delivered, or resign ourselves to never having enough of it. The roots of the words "university" and "college" both mean community. In the age of constant connectedness and social media, it's time for the monolithic, millennium-old, ivy-covered walls to undergo a phase change into something much lighter, more permeable, and fluid. The future lies in personal learning networks and paths, learning that blends experiential and digital approaches, and free and open-source educational models. Increasingly, you will decide what, when, where, and with whom you want to learn, and you will learn by doing. The university is the cathedral of modernity and rationality, and with our whole civilization in crisis, we are poised on the brink of Reformation.

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2006-09-12
  • ISBN : 0215030605
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Further Education written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Education and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines issues in the further education and skills training sector, including the findings of the independent review into the future of FE colleges conducted by Sir Andrew Foster (2005, ISBN 1844786153) (more information on the review can be found at http://www.dfes.gov.uk/furthereducation/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.viewandCategoryID=20andContentID=18) and the funding of learning for those adults outside the Government's current priority funding groups. Amongst its 51 conclusions and recommendations, the report welcomes the Government's recent statements on the importance of the FE sector to the UK economy and society. However, concerns are expressed that some of the Foster review proposals are not radical enough, such as suggested improvements in the administration and functioning of the DfES and the Learning and Skills Council in relation to FE matters. It argues that current funding priorities for adult learning have not been been adequately addressed in the Government's recent White Paper ('Further education: raising skills, improving life chances' Cm 6768, March 2006, ISBN 0101676824) and that a more coherent planning and funding machinery is essential to the overall development of further education.

Book Identity and Resistance in Further Education

Download or read book Identity and Resistance in Further Education written by Pete Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Further Education has reached a crossroads, with questions being asked about its function, aims and focus, as well as querying the role of the FE teacher, the key aspects of the curriculum and which values should inform FE pedagogy. Identity and Resistance in Further Education explores these questions and effectively conveys the sense of uncertainty that those in the field are experiencing today. Connecting Higher Education and FE practitioners and researchers, the book gathers a collection of essays covering a range of topics, including: the journey from student to teacher, critical reflective practice as a way of organising identity, values-based teacher education and policy critique. In keeping with the themes of resistance and creativity, the chapters draw on a wide range of theoretical, as well as literary, perspectives to offer answers. Problematising relationships between the teacher and the institution and the teacher and government, the book argues that the profound challenge to teachers’ values and identities finds its response in a critical collegiality. This book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students engaged in the study of further education, educational policy and teacher education. It should also be essential reading for practitioners and policymakers.

Book Understanding the Further Education Sector

Download or read book Understanding the Further Education Sector written by Susan Wallace and published by Critical Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those working towards QTLS are required to demonstrate a critical understanding of the Further Education (FE) sector and the role of the FE practitioner. This book clearly identifies, particularly for the student teacher with no prior experience, the social, cultural and political context of the sector’s beginnings and explores how this continues to shape and constrain the sector’s status and purpose, and the role and status of its teachers. The text encourages critical thinking about possible routes for change and future development. As increasing numbers of QTLS students are being encouraged to gain part of their qualification at M level, the need for an accessible and critical sourcebook about the FE sector, such as this, is essential.

Book Teacher Educators in Vocational and Further Education

Download or read book Teacher Educators in Vocational and Further Education written by Sai Loo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes a range of empirical-based international contributions by the global community of teacher educators and related researchers on the Further Education/post-compulsory, vocational/occupational and lifelong learning sector. It offers theoretical frameworks and empirical data to delineate issues relating to teacher educators and training in areas regarding policy, programmes, and pedagogic activities. Some of these areas include the education of teachers in vocational education, the professionalization of teacher educators in a neoliberal education system, and teacher educators' perspectives of a training programme for vocational education and training. Additionally, the areas cover the relevance of coherence in vocational teacher education for teacher educators, the use of questioning strategies for teacher educators, teacher educators and their initial disciplines, journeys and job titles, the relevance of craft and reflectivity of teacher educators, and the importance of teacher education and mentoring scheme. The rationale for this book is that there is a comparative lack of research and related publications on teacher educators and the delivery and design of teacher education facilitation in the sector internationally. Also, the FE sector is viewed as a backwater of educational research compared to the other sectors.
