Book excerpt: The MEVVA (Metal Vapor Vacuum Arc) ion source that has been developed at LBL was reported on for the first time at the 1985 Particle Accelerator Conference (1). This source can produce hundreds of milliamperes of beam current of metal species from lithium up to uranium. In the period since then we have developed the source further, and this work is summarized here. We have now run the source with over 30 different beam species, and with an extraction voltage up to 110 kV. We have made and operated a miniature source, the MicroMEVVA. A multi-cathode version, in which one can switch rapidly between cathodes of different materials, has recently been constructed and tested. Applications of the source include: as a synchrotron ion source, as an ion source for heavy ion fusion, and for metallurgical ion implantation; we have done some preliminary work in these directions.

Beams of a variety of ions have been produced, ranging from lithium up to uranium. At an extraction voltage of 25 kV we've measured an ion beam current of over 1 Ampere, with over 550 ema of the beam in an emittance of 0.07.pi. cm. mradians (normalized). The ion charge state distribution varies with cathode material and with arc power; for uranium a typical distribution is peaked at U/sup 5 +/, with up to 40% of the beam current in this charge state. 27 refs., 10 figs.

Book excerpt: We have developed a family of metal vapor vacuum are (MEVVA) high current metal ion sources. The sources were initially developed for the production of high current beams of metal ions for heavy ion synchrotron injection for basic nuclear physics research; more recently they have also been used for metal ion implantation. A number of different embodiments of the source have been developed for these specific applications. Presently the sources operate in a pulsed mode, with pulse width of order 1 ms and repetition rate up to 100 pps. Beam extraction voltage is up to 100 kV, and since the ions produced in the vacuum arc plasma are in general multiply ionized the ion energy is up to several hundred keV. Beam current is up to several Amperes peak and around 10 mA time averaged delivered onto target. Nearly all of the solid metals of the Periodic Table have been use to produce beam. A number of novel features have been incorporated into the sources, including multiple cathodes and the ability to switch between up to 18 separate cathode materials simply and quickly, and a broad beam source version as well as miniature versions. here we review the source designs and their performance. 45 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied the charge state distribution of the ion beam produced by the MEVVA (metal vapor vacuum arc) high current metal ion source. Beams produced from a wide range of cathode materials have been examined and the charge state distributions have been measured as a function of many operational parameters. In this paper we review the charge state data we have accumulated, with particular emphasis on the time history of the distribution throughout the arc current pulse duration. We find that in general the spectra remain quite constant throughout most of the beam pulse, so long as the arc current is constant. There is an interesting early-time transient behavior when the arc is first initiated and the arc current is still rising, during which time the ion charge states produced are observed to be significantly higher than during the steady current region that follows. 12 refs., 5 figs.
