Book Fixed base and In flight Simulations of Longitudinal and Lateral directional Handling Qualities for Piloted Re entry Vehicles

Download or read book Fixed base and In flight Simulations of Longitudinal and Lateral directional Handling Qualities for Piloted Re entry Vehicles written by Edwin A. Kidd and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal and lateral directional flying qualities for the re-entry mission are reported. The program utilized primarily a high-fidelity fixed-base ground simulator with evaluations made by three pilots. One of the three pilots also made in-flight evaluations of longitudinal flying qualities in the same vehicle, a threeaxis variable stability airplane flown with a two-axis side controller and conventional rubber pedals. Control sensitivity evaluations were compared to center stick results of earlier work. The longitudinal flying qualities as evaluated both on the ground simulator and in flight are compared and related to earlier investigations. Pilot rating variability, both interpilot and intrapilot, are quantized and discussed for the ground and flight experiments. Performance measures are reported.

Book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control

Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book An Improved Method of Predicting Aircraft Longitudinal Handling Qualities Based on the Minimum Pilot Rating Concept

Download or read book An Improved Method of Predicting Aircraft Longitudinal Handling Qualities Based on the Minimum Pilot Rating Concept written by John Dudley Arnold and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base simulation of some of the flight tests in the USAF/CAL variable stability T-33 aircraft was performed. The task was maintaining pitch attitude in the presence of vertical turbulence. The root-mean-square state data and parameters in a linear pilot model were determined from the simulation. These items were correlated with the Cooper-Harper Pilot Ratings. This led to the development of a pilot-rating expression based on rms state errors and pilot workload. This rating expression was used in a digital computer program to accurately predict pilot ratings and rms state errors using only the aircraft stability derivatives, airspeed, and altitude as inputs. Book Effects of Cockpit Lateral Stick Characteristics on Handling Qualities and Pilot Dynamics

Download or read book Effects of Cockpit Lateral Stick Characteristics on Handling Qualities and Pilot Dynamics written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of analysis of cockpit lateral control feel-system studies. Variations in feel-system natural frequency, damping, and command sensing reference (force and position) were investigated, in combination with variations in the aircraft response characteristics. The primary data for the report were obtained from a flight investigation conducted with a variable-stability airplane, with additional information taken from other flight experiments and ground-based simulations for both airplanes and helicopters . The study consisted of analysis of handling qualities ratings and extraction of open-loop, pilot-vehicle describing functions from sum-of-sines tracking data, including, for a limited subset of these data, the development of pilot models. The study confirms the findings of other investigators that the effects on pilot opinion of cockpit feel-system dynamics are not equivalent to a comparable level of added time delay, and until a more comprehensive set of criteria are developed, it is recommended that feel-system dynamics be considered a delay-inducing element in the aircraft response. The best correlation with time-delay requirements was found when the feel-system dynamics were included in the delay measurements, regardless of the command reference. This is a radical departure from past approaches. Mitchell, David G. and Aponso, Bimal L. and Klyde, David H. Book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements

Download or read book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements written by I. L. Ashkenas and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a codification in two parts of conventional aircraft handling qualities criteria. The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.

Book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities

Download or read book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities written by Charles R. Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is directed toward investigating the effects on pilots rating of large variations (L alpha) in the relative amplitude and phase of the basic airplane responses to elevator control. The effects of L alpha and true speed on longitudinal flying qualities, optimum control gain, and normal acceleration response to turbulence were investigated in a ground simulator. The steady state ratio of normal acceleration to angle of attack was found to be of significance both to the flying qualities of an airplane and to the optimum longitudinal control gain. Normal acceleration response to rough air was demonstrated to be primarily a function of L alpha and the short period frequency and damping ratio.

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Some New Longitudinal Handling Qualities Parameters

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Some New Longitudinal Handling Qualities Parameters written by Henry R. Jex and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systems-analysis theory of handling qualities (which describes the pilot's adaptive behavior in closed-loop operation by servo techniques, and relates his opinion-ratings to his adapted characteristics and the system performance) is used to reveal some important parameters associated with the numerator terms in the airframe longitudinal transfer function. The predictions are verified by five experienced test pilots operating in a fixed-base aircraft simulator. Four possible numerator effects on handling qualities are analyzed theoretically: short-period lead effect on pitch attitude tracking, static-to-short-period gain effects on attitude tracking, short-period lead effects on the control of short-period divergence, and numerator frequency and damping effects on altitude tracking. The results are correlated with other test work, and the implications of these results on future handling qualities research and specifications are discussed.
