Book Status Report on Research for the U S Military Academy cadet Leaders Task

Download or read book Status Report on Research for the U S Military Academy cadet Leaders Task written by Helen R. Haggerty and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuation of psychological research for the United States Military Academy, initiated during WW II, effort has been largely concerned with improving selection procedures and with evaluating achievement in various aspects of the primary officer training programs. The present report deals with research undertaken in a series of projects covering the period 1 January 1957 through 31 December 1962. The two major problems with which the current research has been concerned are prediction of success of WP graduates in officer assignments of various types and at various levels, and identification of those applicants who show leadership potential and who also are motivated to complete USMA training and subsequent Regular Army officer careers. A number of instruments were developed and administered with the objective of supplementing current selection measures to provide more adequate assessment of motivation and leadership potential. Earlier findings were reinforced in that the Aptitude for the Service Rating (ASR) continues to maintain its predictive superiority over other WP measures with reference to later performance on both field grade and company grade officers. Continuing validity studies and extended follow-up research hold promise for provision of guidance to the USMA in evaluating training given to cadets.

Book The Military Academy of Malaysia Compared with West Point

Download or read book The Military Academy of Malaysia Compared with West Point written by Jowati Juhary and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation compares the learning environment of elite military academies in the U.S. and Malaysia, namely the United States Military Academy, New York (West Point) and the Military Academy of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (MAM). The dissertation began as an investigation of the place of e-learning and simulation technologies in educating future military officers. It was assumed that as modern technologies for war and defence have changed, so too must the military academies accommodate to that - especially in producing the right kind of officers who will lead the defence of the nation. Research in West Point and the MAM, however, revealed much more significant and deeper differences between the two learning environments. These are also analysed in this dissertation on the basis of in-depth interviews with staff at both academies and responses to some 241 questionnaires returned by the cadets. One of the most important findings in this study is that the learning environment at West Point is informed by theThayer System which, in turn, is based on principles strongly reminiscent of the constructivist school of pedagogical inquiry. The impact of the Thayer System on the learning environment is analysed, as are the essential features of constructivism. In Malaysia, by contrast, the learning environment in the academy is driven by teacher-oriented practices that are not sensitive to the needs of students. Moreover, the broader authoritarian tendencies in Malaysia have encouraged the entrenchment of didactic modes of teacher-student exchanges in the classroom. These were found not to be conducive to creative, student-centred learning processes capable of producing the kind of officers who can lead the Malaysian military at a time of growing regional insecurity in the Asia Pacific.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and Learning the West Point Way is a unique compendium of the best teaching and learning practices from one of the most celebrated and storied undergraduate teaching and learning environments and institutions in America – the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, USA. Drawing on the broad academic curriculum that the students follow at West Point – in addition to military leadership, character development, and competitive athletics – this book describes proven and effective undergraduate pedagogy across a number of academic disciplines. Case studies, strategies and techniques, empirical teaching and learning research results, syllabi, and assignments developed and deployed by West Point faculty are included, which faculty in other higher education institutions can adapt and apply to their own programs and courses. An accompanying companion website provides additional syllabi, course guides, lesson plans, PowerPoint activities, and lecture slides, as well as videos of the editors and authors discussing how key concepts in their chapters might be applied in different teaching and learning contexts. This is an opportunity to gain an in-depth insight into the programs and practices inside one of the world’s premier leadership development and educational institutions. It should appeal to new and experienced faculty and administrators interested in course creation and syllabus design across a wide range of disciplines in educational institutions and military academies across the globe.

Book Analysis of the Research and Studies Program at the United States Military Academy

Download or read book Analysis of the Research and Studies Program at the United States Military Academy written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of time and effort devoted to research by the faculty at the United States Military Academy has been increasing over the past 20 years. Commensurately, the funding received by the departments and the research centers of excellence has grown dramatically. There are two significant complementary forces driving these increases: 1. More departments and faculty researchers are understanding the significantly positive value of conducting research on Army and DoD projects and its impact on their teaching cadets in the classroom, and 2. More organizations are aware of the impact US Military Academy researchers can have on their organization through the application of their analytical abilities combined with their military expertise. The Dean of the Academic Board, BO Daniel Kaufman, wants to ensure that the outreach research program continues to grow by enabling researchers and facilitating their interaction with clients. Conversely, he also wants to ensure the research continues to improve the educational experience in the classroom and does not become its detriment. To accomplish this, BO Kaufman, requested the Department of Systems Engineering lead a team of analysts to determine the organization and approach required to meet the Academy's needs. In this report we describe our application of the Systems Engineering and Management Process (SEMP) to the issue. This is the process we followed to develop our recommendation and explain our plan for implementation of that recommendation. The final recommended course of action which address the Dean's and other significant stakeholders needs, wants and desires is for the Academy to increase the size - and impact - of the Academic Research Division (ARD) and institute a Research Advisory Council to facilitate interdisciplinary interactions between departments and research centers.

Book Military High Schools in America

Download or read book Military High Schools in America written by William B Trousdale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once considered a bastion of learning, leadership, and disciplined lifestyle, today’s private military academies are often regarded as expensive holding facilities for unwanted, incorrigible boys who have nowhere else to go. Their depiction in popular media has reinforced the impression that they are boot camps disguised as educational institutions. The reality is far more complex and far more encouraging. Using a decade of participant observation research, including serving as an instructor at some of these schools, anthropologist William Trousdale explores the contemporary experience of military school life. From the admissions office to daily life in barracks, classrooms, playing fields, and social events, he describes how these schools endeavor to realize their mission of creating educated, mature young men from largely at-risk youth and the challenges—both met and unmet—in doing so. This volume will be of interest to those studying secondary and alternative education, at-risk youth, and the role of the military in society.

Book The United States Military Academy in an Era of Educational Reform 1900 1925

Download or read book The United States Military Academy in an Era of Educational Reform 1900 1925 written by Roger Hurless Nye and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-1898 professionalization of the American Army placed demands on the United States Military Academy to modernize its military training and to regularize its systems for inculcating professional values and norms in the Corps of Cadets. The concurrent and more fundamental revolution in higher education challenged Academy authorities to expand the curriculum both horizontally and vertically; to provide more specialization in the academic disciplines and fields of engineering; to forgo the 19th century rationale of mental discipline and recitational instruction; and to provide a better educated faculty. In this study, the author attempted to research the men in the governing body, their policy problems and how they coped with them, and the environment which influenced their thought and actions. Analysis has been focused particularly on matters that remain at issue in the present-day Academy. He feels that the results could contribute to further understanding of the problems of higher education at institutes sponsored by the federal government.
