Book excerpt: The second novel in Nuruddin Farah's Blood in the Sun trilogy, Gifts is the beguiling tale of a Somali family and the struggles of its powerful matriarch to keep it whole. Duniya is a single mother, raising twins while working as a nurse in a Mogadiscio hospital. Her self-sufficient world is rocked when her rebellious daughter brings home a mysterious foundling infant. And when Duniya accepts a ride to work from a wealthy, romantically interested family friend, her whole life is turned upside down. Meanwhile, the hospital where she works is besieged by a desperate population ravaged by war, drought, disease, and famine. Western relief agencies have invaded Somalia with their charity, and some Somalis chafe at tainted goods and the burden of debts they can never hope to repay. With lyrical, luxuriant prose, Farah weaves a spellbinding tapestry of reportage, dreams, memory, folktales, and family lore. In his hands, Duniya's tale becomes emblematic of the struggles of an entire people. This path leading him to believe that he needed to start planning sooner, rather than later, or else hed be forced to accept the identity being defined right before his eyes. Ascension above an adolescent mediocrity began after he realized if his ship wasnt coming in, hed have to swim out to it. Unexpectedly, the man he grew into finds a love he settles for rather than letting the Lord settle it for him. After going through the motions of deciding which he wanted more, he discovers that self-defining a treasure map of sorts is the best solution to curtailing any further adverse relationship decisions. Landing a job at Delta Airlines he recognizes that questions he was asking were being answered by the lessons learned while flying through a cloudy perspective to suddenly arrive at the bluest skies hed ever seen. Through the clouds is his journey through those sometimes turbulent skies as he was trying to figure out what was most important. Would he find himself so far up a million dollar dream that he isnt open to a love who finds him wanting? Or would he stay below the clouds long enough to wait on what God was planning all along?

Book On the Road and Off the Record with Leonard Bernstein

Download or read book On the Road and Off the Record with Leonard Bernstein written by Charlie Harmon and published by Charlesbridge Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating Leonard Bernstein's centenary with an intimate and detailed look at the public and private life of the Maestro written by his former assistant. Foreword by Broadway legend Harold Prince. "An affectionate portrait of an eminent musician who was driven by demons." —Kirkus Reviews "Harmon’s personable and warm account of what it was like to work for one of the twentieth century’s musical giants casts new light on Bernstein and his world." —Booklist "This multifaceted perspective gives readers plenty of salacious gossip paired with insight into Leonard Bernstein’s remarkable artistic achievements later in life." —Library Journal On the Road is a colorfully written, unforgettably entertaining and unputdownable book, and is available just in time for LB’s 100th birthday. Unreservedly recommended. —Fanfare Magazine Leonard Bernstein reeked of cheap cologne and obviously hadn't showered, shaved, or slept in a while. Was he drunk to boot? He greeted his new assistant with "What are you drinking?" Yes, he was drunk. Charlie Harmon was hired to manage the day-to-day parts of Bernstein's life. There was one additional responsibility: make sure Bernstein met the deadline for an opera commission. But things kept getting in the way: the centenary of Igor Stravinsky, intestinal parasites picked up in Mexico, teaching all summer in Los Angeles, a baker's dozen of young men, plus depression, exhaustion, insomnia, and cut-throat games of anagrams. Did the opera get written? For four years, Charlie saw Bernstein every day, as his social director, gatekeeper, valet, music copyist, and itinerant orchestra librarian. He packed (and unpacked) Bernstein's umpteen pieces of luggage, got the Maestro to his concerts, kept him occupied changing planes in Zurich, Anchorage, Tokyo, or Madrid, and learned how to make small talk with mayors, ambassadors, a chancellor, a queen, and a Hollywood legend or two. How could anyone absorb all those people and places? Because there was music: late-night piano duets, or the Maestro's command to accompany an audition, or, by the way, the greatest orchestras in the world. Charlie did it, and this is what it was like, told for the first time.

Download or read book The Story Grid written by Shawn Coyne and published by Black Irish Entertainment LLC. This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT IS THE STORY GRID? The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It's like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what's not. The Story Grid breaks down the component parts of stories to identify the problems. And finding the problems in a story is almost as difficult as the writing of the story itself (maybe even more difficult). The Story Grid is a tool with many applications: 1. It will tell a writer if a Story ?works? or ?doesn't work. 2. It pinpoints story problems but does not emotionally abuse the writer, revealing exactly where a Story (not the person creating the Story'the Story) has failed. 3. It will tell the writer the specific work necessary to fix that Story's problems. 4. It is a tool to re-envision and resuscitate a seemingly irredeemable pile of paper stuck in an attic drawer. 5. It is a tool that can inspire an original creation.

Download or read book A Shock written by Keith Ridgway and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Keith Ridgway published his landmark cult novel Hawthorn & Child, his ardent fans have yearned for more Finally, Ridgway gives us A Shock, his thrilling and unsparing, slippery and shockingly good new novel. Formed as a rondel of interlocking stories with a clutch of more or less loosely connected repeating characters, it’s at once deracinated yet potent with place, druggy yet frighteningly shot through with reality. His people appear, disappear, and reappear. They’re on the fringes of London, clinging to sanity or solvency or a story by their fingernails, consumed by emotions and anxieties in fuzzily understood situations. A deft, high-wire act, full of imprecise yet sharp dialog as well as witchy sleights of hand reminiscent of Muriel Spark, A Shock delivers a knockout punch of an ending. Perhaps Ridgway’s most breathtaking quality is his scintillating stealthiness: you can never quite put your finger on how he casts his spell—he delivers the shock of a master jewel thief (already far-off and scot-free) stealing your watch: when at some point you look down at your wrist, all you see is that in more than one way you don’t know what time it is…

Most of the book is written in rhyming couplets, either while detailing an adventure, or longing for love and acceptance. Also, many of my writings are letters to family and friends. Leaving home at 18, to travel abroad, captures the occasional youthful distress, but more of the excitement of discovering the world around me. Follow me through two marriages and many more adventures, both in California, and in New Hampshire, but mostly be part of my many adventures abroad. Book excerpt: A good rationality? The only rationality. These rooms are designed and efficient when stacked against others. When stacked against themselves they appeared to be curved or at lease they could be curved....what would that do to our consciousness? If They exist as curved rooms? Could we see the patterns emerging after They exist as blips upon the EEG memory. What about the pundits who have designed and built them for us? They are looking for the regular within the regular. Standardizing the working class soul? I passed by the clay matrons and they work in circles always circles. They try to complete the mistakes that the machine put them into: orbits. Especially at a time they should break from orbits. Moving forward the text emerges towards the self: using a machine, what can we do over? And then in an OCD effort, the obsessive-compulsive effort, circularity, just a center of there being. And they're being is one of unhappiness. Time to cut the trajectory...the gravitational pull of 'the mistake'.
