Book A Multimodal Study of Sarcasm in Interactional Humor

Download or read book A Multimodal Study of Sarcasm in Interactional Humor written by Sabina Tabacaru and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corpus-based approach to humor offers innovative and more than plausible objectives, supported by sound arguments, which underline the need to analyze humor both verbally and non-verbally. The cognitive linguistic account of humor sets to analyze a corpus of humorous meanings in interaction and to present the elements that help to create the humorous effects: common ground, intersubjectivity, facial expressions, speakers' attitude, etc. The large corpus of examples annotated in ELAN offers a much-needed multimodal perspective of humor, which encompasses all the different techniques used by speakers. The present analysis offers inspiring insight for future research, in different fields of study: multimodality, humor, and psycholinguistics. The study reveals the need of analyzing both verbal and non-verbal elements in discourse in general and humor in particular as co-speech gestures are essential for the understanding of the message as intended by the speakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the Hugo and Nebula Awards for his writing, Barry Longyear flexes his creative and comic chops in Yesterday’s Tomorrow. In these true stories, Longyear wanders from scenic Maine backdrops to the smoky hum of backwoods Twelve Step meetings, all while dissecting why some recoveries don’t come naturally—and why it’s okay to let down our guard and laugh. Recovery is one hell of a roller coaster. It twists and plummets, upending our stomachs, while some maniac cackles hysterically in the front car. What’s so damn funny? Besides our stomach’s contents, what are we missing? Truth is, while we all sit anxiously awaiting that next drop, Barry Longyear is enjoying the wild ride. An award-winning author and proprietor of the Life Sucks Better Clean blog, Barry has been on recovery’s ride for a while now. He understands the importance of stupid questions and sarcastic responses. He’s honest to the point of embarrassment. And he has real problems: with friends, with self-ordained recovery police, and with the god of his childhood. But he also has a strong recovery full of laughter. Despite all its ups and downs, your recovery, too, can be a good one.

  • Release : 2017-11-21
  • ISBN : 1510726950
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book Sign of the Apocalypse written by Getchell, John and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friends, neighbors, and passersby from all over the country can’t fail to miss “The Sign’s constantly changing humor and insight. On occasion, The Sign of the Apocalypse (SOTA) traffics in the earnest, but at its heart is rooted in a deep-seated desire to express the sarcastic and snort-worthy. This, and a love of haiku, pizza, Latin, double entendre, and the worst puns ever crafted. Two years in the making, the message on “The Sign” is changed on a daily basis, with the primary benefit of slowing passing traffic to a honking crawl. It was designed to convey pithy tidbits of thought and wordplay. In its conception, SOTA was perpetrated in spite of the objection of the author's girlfriend, and with hopes of creating controversy and dismay in the local community. The girlfriend packed up and left, and the community and town fathers were surprisingly gruntled by the proceedings. Punny and sarcastic signs include: • When attacked by a gang of clowns, go for the juggler • What if doing the hokey pokey really is what it’s all about? • Legalize marinara • A penny saved is ridiculous • Wendy, please take me back / I’m so miserable / it’s almost like / you’re still here

Book The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid

Download or read book The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid written by Bill Bryson and published by Crown. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the world's most beloved writers and New York Times bestselling author of A Walk in the Woods and The Body, a vivid, nostalgic, and utterly hilarious memoir of growing up in the 1950s. Bill Bryson was born in the middle of the American century—1951—in the middle of the United States—Des Moines, Iowa—in the middle of the largest generation in American history—the baby boomers. As one of the best and funniest writers alive, he is perfectly positioned to mine his memories of a totally all-American childhood for 24-carat memoir gold. Like millions of his generational peers, Bill Bryson grew up with a rich fantasy life as a superhero. In his case, he ran around his house and neighborhood with an old football jersey with a thunderbolt on it and a towel about his neck that served as his cape, leaping tall buildings in a single bound and vanquishing awful evildoers (and morons)—in his head—as "The Thunderbolt Kid." Using this persona as a springboard, Bill Bryson re-creates the life of his family and his native city in the 1950s in all its transcendent normality—a life at once completely familiar to us all and as far away and unreachable as another galaxy. It was, he reminds us, a happy time, when automobiles and televisions and appliances (not to mention nuclear weapons) grew larger and more numerous with each passing year, and DDT, cigarettes, and the fallout from atmospheric testing were considered harmless or even good for you. He brings us into the life of his loving but eccentric family, including affectionate portraits of his father, a gifted sportswriter for the local paper and dedicated practitioner of isometric exercises, and of his mother, whose job as the home furnishing editor for the same paper left her little time for practicing the domestic arts at home. The many readers of Bill Bryson’s earlier classic, A Walk in the Woods, will greet the reappearance in these pages of the immortal Stephen Katz, seen hijacking literally boxcar loads of beer. He is joined in the Bryson gallery of immortal characters by the demonically clever Willoughby brothers, who apply their scientific skills and can-do attitude to gleefully destructive ends. Warm and laugh-out-loud funny, and full of his inimitable, pitch-perfect observations, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is as wondrous a book as Bill Bryson has ever written. It will enchant anyone who has ever been young.

Download or read book Now The Physics of Time written by Richard A. Muller and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the celebrated author of the best-selling Physics for Future Presidents comes “a provocative, strongly argued book on the fundamental nature of time” (Lee Smolin). You are reading the word "now" right now. But what does that mean? "Now" has bedeviled philosophers, priests, and modern-day physicists from Augustine to Einstein and beyond. In Now, eminent physicist Richard A. Muller takes up the challenge. He begins with remarkably clear explanations of relativity, entropy, entanglement, the Big Bang, and more, setting the stage for his own revolutionary theory of time, one that makes testable predictions. Muller’s monumental work will spark major debate about the most fundamental assumptions of our universe, and may crack one of physics’ longest-standing enigmas.
