Download or read book In My Father s House written by James H. Street and published by eNet Press. This book was released on 1941 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Abernathy family lives in rural Mississippi where folks farm cotton and grow vegetables and kitchens are filled with smells of sweet potato pie, muscadine preserves, and pickled grapes. Cupboards bulge with Octagon soap wrappers collected to trade for dishes, and shelves are lined with homemade cures for everything ― sulphur, molasses, quinine, calomel, and mutton suet. Life is serene and harmonious if folks follow the rules and heed natures' signals. Everyone knows, for example, that a morning shower, like an old person's dance, never lasts long, or that high birds and high smoke mean good plowing weather. Some of the most important codes, however, are unspoken, and when these laws are violated, men are obliged to abide by the code even if it means doing the unthinkable. Hobson Abernathy, Big Hob, loves his family and leads his household with firmness and uncompromising example. His wife, Lavinia, was married at sixteen and still fulfills her duties with skill and selfless devotion. She obeys her husband (one of the rules), but she's a strong woman and when the occasion demands, she offers her wisdom to bring balance back to the family. Teenie, their teenage daughter spends her time bossin' her brother, Little Hob. Little Hob says he doesn't mind 'cause the same is true for chickens. One ol' rooster is always the boss and he can peck any chicken he wants to. When Teenie isn't bossin', she's dreaming about the young man she's sparkin', Woody. And, Woody? Well, he's anxious to marry Teenie and brags a lot to prove his eligibility. “Not bad loud-mouth bragging, just tongue-strutting,” as Hobson calls it. Little Hob is about growed up; still a boy in many ways, he is proud of his advancing maturity and is not shirking the arrival of a man's responsibilities. Hobson teaches his son everything he needs to know, and if there's a man Little Hob idolizes, it would be his papa, Big Hob.

Download or read book The Naked Gaze written by Carlos Rojas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of visuality in early modern and modern China. Its focus, however, is not so much on imagery per se but rather on how vision itself has been conceived, imagined, and deployed in a variety of discursive contexts. Of particular interest is how these discourses of vision have been used to articulate issues of gender and desire, and specifically processes of gendered subject formation. Through detailed readings of narrative works by eight authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—ranging from the canonical to the popular to the esoteric—the study identifies three distinct constellations of visual concerns corresponding to the late imperial, mid-twentieth century, and contemporary periods, respectively. At the same time, however, it argues that those historical periodizations themselves do not reflect a smooth, unidirectional temporal movement; rather, they are the result of a complex process of retrospection and anticipatory projection. The goal of this volume is to use a focus on tropes of visuality and gender to reflect on shifting understandings of the significance of Chineseness, modernity, and Chinese modernity.

Download or read book The Time Bind written by Arlie Russell Hochschild and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national bestseller that put "work/family balance" in the headlines and on the White House agenda, with a new introduction by the author. When The Time Bind was first published in 1997, it was hailed as the decade's most influential study of our work/family crisis. In the short time since, the crisis has only become more acute. Arlie Russell Hochschild, bestselling author of The Second Shift, spent three summers at a Fortune 500 company interviewing top executives, secretaries, factory hands, and others. What she found was startling: Though every mother and nearly every father said "family comes first," few of these working parents questioned their long hours or took the company up on chances for flextime, paternity leave, or other "family friendly" policies. Why not? It seems the roles of home and work had reversed: work was offering stimulation, guidance, and a sense of belonging, while home had become the place in which there was too much to do in too little time. Today Hochschild's findings are more relevant than ever. As she shows in her new introduction, the borders between family and work have become even more permeable. With the Internet extending working hours at home and offices offering domestic enticements -- free snacks, soft music -- to keep employees later at their jobs, The Time Bind stands as an increasingly important warning about the way we live and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huntington is back again telling the naked truth about direct to brain windows! Have we ever had it so good? If you need to read books then you are being denied direct to brain windows! But people being denied D2BW still have rights. From the same author of "Big Science Secrets, Lies, and Mistakes", the book that shook the foundations of modern science, and "Direct to Brain Windows", the first book to expose the secret of D2BW and the "Neuron segregation", comes another timeless classic. Many will claim, for perhaps centuries, that it is crazy talk, but our own experience and the many hints of history tell the exact opposite story. Every time we hear that familiar jeer in our ear, feel an itch on our nose, our eyelid flicks, or our muscles do something we don't want them too...it could only be D2B! Ted takes us through all the aspects of D2B and remote neuron reading and writing that our parents (or their parents!) never told us. Is someone paying that co-worker to be so rude? Is there a reason you never get the date or the job? Do many people seem to know intimate details about you as if they get video from inside your home directly to their eyes? Yes, because they do and you don't! Huntington is the first person in the history of Earth to tell the secret of remote neuron reading and writing publicly, and in this book he explains many more secret details. One look and you'll get hooked just like a D2B consumer!
