Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Great Composers in Watercolor, artist Douglas Lew offers authentic, refreshing, and imaginative portraits of the great composers of seven historical periods. The urge to connect with a famous person's face and his life is a universal desire. Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven are just a few of the many composers Lew highlights in his collection of watercolor paintings, combining a brief history of each musician with a likeness of their face created using minimal brush strokes and inspired colors. With a free flowing, organic, and transparent style, Lew uses the elements of shape, texture, and color to enliven and enrich the rendition. Suitable for a coffee table or as a gift for music and art lovers alike, Great Composers in Watercolor brings to life the faces behind the beautiful music appreciated for centuries. "Doug Lew captures the era and melodic essence of each composer ... each work is a historical gem." -James Riccardo, concert violinist and music director of the Health Sciences Orchestra of the University of Minnesota "Doug's paintings bring these composers to life with the faithfulness all great musicians strive to achieve in performance." -David Herring, bass trombone, Minnesota Orchestra

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 book presents a unique sociological vision of the evolution of jazz in the twentieth century. Analysing organizational structures and competing discourses in American music, Paul Lopes shows how musicians and others transformed the meaning and practice of jazz. Set against the distinct worlds of high art and popular art in America, the rise of a jazz art world is shown to be a unique movement - a socially diverse community struggling in various ways against cultural orthodoxy. Cultural politics in America is shown to be a dynamic, open, and often contradictory process of constant re-interpretation. This work is a compelling social history of American culture that incorporates various voices in jazz, including musicians, critics, collectors, producers and enthusiasts. Accessibly written and interdisciplinary in approach, it will be of great interest to scholars and students of sociology, cultural studies, social history, American studies, African-American studies, and jazz studies.

Book Musical Landscapes in Color

Download or read book Musical Landscapes in Color written by Bill Banfield and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to the award-winning The Black Composer Speaks (Scarecrow Press, 1978), this exploration of the creative world of African American composers traces the lives and careers of 40 talented individuals and, in their own words, provides perspectives on a world that has been slow to recognize their remarkable contributions to classical music. The discussion places the music of these composers within the greater context of Western art music, but analyzes it through the lenses of sociology, Western concepts of art and taste, and vernacular musical forms, including spirituals, blues, jazz, and contemporary popular music. Each chapter is devoted to an individual composer, who discusses his or her musical training, compositional techniques and style, and the composer's personal philosophy as reflected in his or her music. A selected list of compositions for each composer is included, as well as a photo and sample of the composer's "hand." Banfield offers unprecedented insight into the history and influence of the African American composer with this documentary, which will appeal to everyone from the music scholar to the general reader.

Book The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians

Download or read book The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians written by Lorene Ruymar and published by Centerstream Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Fretted). The term "steel guitar" can refer to instruments with multiple tunings, 6 to 14 strings, and even multiple fretboards. To add even more confusion, the term "Hawaiian guitar" refers to an instrument played flat on the lap with a steel bar outside of Hawaii, but in Hawaii, it is the early term for the slack key guitar. Lorene Ruymar clears up the confusion in her new book that takes a look at Hawaiian music; the origin of the steel guitar and its spread throughout the world; Hawaiian playing styles, techniques and tunings; and more. Includes hundreds of photos, a foreword by Jerry Byrd, and a bibliography and suggested reading list.

Book Study in Black and White

Download or read book Study in Black and White written by Tanya Sheehan and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Tanya Sheehan takes humor seriously in order to trace how photographic comedy was used in America and transnationally to express evolving ideas about race, black emancipation, and civil rights in the mid-1800s and into the twentieth century. Sheehan employs a trove of understudied materials to write a new history of photography, one that encompasses the rise of the commercial portrait studio in the 1840s, the popularization of amateur photography around 1900, and the mass circulation of postcards and other photographic ephemera in the twentieth century. She examines the racial politics that shaped some of the most essential elements of the medium, from the negative-positive process to the convention of the photographic smile. The book also places historical discourses in relation to contemporary art that critiques racism through humor, including the work of Genevieve Grieves, Adrian Piper, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, and Fred Wilson. By treating racial humor about and within the photographic medium as complex social commentary, rather than a collectible curiosity, Study in Black and White enriches our understanding of photography in popular culture. Transhistorical and interdisciplinary, this book will be of vital interest to scholars of art history and visual studies, critical race studies, U.S. history, and African American studies.
