Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal world embodies diversified groups which colonize, multiply and survive in nature on many macro- and micro-ecological niches and substrates. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, filamentous or unicellular living organisms which are ubiquitous and cosmopolitan in distribution. Of the estimated 1.5 million fungal species, more than 98,000 fungal species have been described. Approximately 28,000 fungal species are reported from India. The fungi play an important role in biodegradation, recycling of organic matter, pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, medicine, industry, bioremediation, waste management and other activities. In India hardly we have database but for few a books on Indian fungi, compiled from time to time by some mycologists. The present book includes 16 chapters contributed by eminent mycologists. Chapters include data on diversity, taxonomy, ecology and application of Helicosporous fungi, genus Spegazzinia, Rusts and Smuts, Chaetomiaceae, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia, Russula, wild edible fungi, poisonous mushrooms, insect fungi and other related aspects. This book will be very useful and a valuable addition to the existing literature on the same subject.

Book excerpt: Pythium is one of the most important phytopathogens causing significant damage to agriculture, forest, and nurseries, etc. It is an unseen enemy of the root zone of various plants and hence considered as "hidden terror" for a number of plants. An accurate diagnosis and identification of Pythium causing various infections in plants is very important because it is often confused with several other fungi. Pythium infections are difficult to control once they have set in. Therefore, its effective and ecofriendly management is of paramount importance. In addition, there are many reports on Pythium causing infections in human beings and animals. The present book on Pythium focuses on various aspects which mainly include pathogenesis, technological developments in detection and diagnosis, and its management. Key Features Includes identification of Pythium spp. by traditional and molecular methods Deals with different diseases caused by Pythium spp Describes the role of Pythium in mammalian diseases Incorporates various management strategies Discusses emerging role of nanotechnological tools for the management of Pythium diseases

A dedicated section describes the roles and applications of fungal endophytes. The book also includes research in other important areas such as mushrooms and wood rotting fungi. Different chapters are written by leading mycologists. This book is useful to students, teachers and researchers in botany, microbiology, biotechnology and life sciences, agriculture and industries using fungi to produce various valuable products.

Book Fungi in Extreme Environments Ecological Role and Biotechnological Significance

Download or read book Fungi in Extreme Environments Ecological Role and Biotechnological Significance written by Sonia M. Tiquia-Arashiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decades, scientists have been intrigued by the fascinating organisms that inhabit extreme environments. These organisms, known as extremophiles, thrive in habitats which for other terrestrial life-forms are intolerably hostile or even lethal. Based on such technological advances, the study of extremophiles has provided, over the last few years, ground-breaking discoveries that challenge the paradigms of modern biology. In the new bioeconomy, fungi in general, play a very important role in addressing major global challenges, being instrumental for improved resource efficiency, making renewable substitutes for products from fossil resources, upgrading waste streams to valuable food and feed ingredients, counteracting life-style diseases and antibiotic resistance through strengthening the gut biota, making crop plants more robust to survive climate change conditions, and functioning as host organisms for production of new biological drugs. This range of new uses of fungi all stand on the shoulders of the efforts of mycologists over generations. The book is organized in five parts: (I) Biodiversity, Ecology, Genetics and Physiology of Extremophilic Fungi, (II) Biosynthesis of Novel Biomolecules and Extremozymes (III) Bioenergy and Biofuel synthesis, and (IV) Wastewater and biosolids treatment, and (V) Bioremediation.

Book excerpt: Indian Erysiphaceae' is a monographic work on the powdery mildew fungi based on the teliomorphic stage collected on 86 different host species from various agroecological zones of Himachal Pradesh. So far, 22 genera and about 300 species of powdery mildew fungi have been described from India, but all is scattered in mycological literature. An attempt has been made to compile all the species reported from India. Each of the genus studied has been included in separate chapter. Besides, host index, fungus index and references, the species described in the present studies and those described from India have been presented in tabular form in the end alongwith the references. Camera lucida drawings and coloured microphotographs have also been provided. This monograph will provide a base for future compilations of the work on Indian Erysiphaceae and will be of great use to the students and researchers not only in India but abroad also.

Book Fungal Taxonomy

  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Fungal Taxonomy written by Rafiq Ahmad Dar and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of fungi among the various ecological niches of the biosphere seems to be infinite. Estimates suggest a total of 1.5 million fungal species; only less than a half has been merely described yet. This implies a backlog demand, which comes along with a rising importance of novel techniques for a rapid and unambiguous detection and identification of fungi to explore the fungal diversity as a coherent whole. Molecular techniques, particularly the technology of the polymerase chain reaction, have revolutionized the molecular biology and the molecular diagnosis of fungi. The incorporation of molecular techniques into what has been traditionally considered as morphology-based taxonomy of fungi helps us in the differentiation of fungal species and varieties. Databases of genomes and genetic markers used as sources for molecular barcodes are being created and the fungal world is in progress to be unveiled with the help of bioinformatics tools. Genome projects provide evidence for ancient insertion elements, provirus or prophase remnants, and many other patches of unusual composition. Consequently, it becomes increasingly important to pinpoint genes, which characterize fungal organisms at different taxonomic levels without the necessity of previous cultivation. Unfortunately, the initiative of an excessive use of molecular barcoding has been hampered by a lack of sufficient and novel synapomorphic nucleotide characters and signature sequences. Moreover, high intraspecific variability of conventional molecular characters makes it difficult to identify species borders. However, DNA sequences and other genetic markers provide large amounts of data which are cultivation-independent and do not depend on physiological inconsistencies. Genetic markers constantly reflect the identification treasure hidden in the genetic information and allow to control the degree of resolution by choosing the appropriate genes. In this book, we highlight the advances of the past decade, both in methodology and in the understanding of genomic organization and approach problems of the identification and differentiation of fungi using molecular markers and compare those with classical procedures traditionally used for species designation.
